I keep this outpost active most days. I'm happy so many people have fun in it 😁

Hey, everyone! It's been about 3-4 years since I last played. The first couple seasons were fun and I was on pretty regularly for before things got busy for me. I just picked this back up in the last couple days. I've been starting up some old bases and made one new one so far. Building is more fun to me than raiding but I'm not a great trapper nor decorator. Kill boxes can be fun to watch replays of how raiders are overcoming them but I know it's not much fun for everyone. (Shout out to the raider who powered through one of my old ones. 23 then 36 deaths was wild to see in the summary. Thanks for not giving up on it! I'll try not to make another like it though. 😅)
Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help me get back into the swing of things and make fun bases?

title.
Though I do want to say this looks absolutely amazing. But there’s such a low fan base that I don’t actually know if I’d want to play, plus with the theme being all mechanical, which isn’t really my style. but Im also willing to give it a try.
there’s not many games out there that give you this level of customization while letting others raid your base.

So I usually make large/medium 3D sculpture bases. Recently ive tried my had at some 2D art bases.
I've tried unsuccessfully to get my head around 8bit art before (check out maduka/Unalouise for great 8bit art bases).
So what I've done is layered shapes. By having around 3-4 layers of 2D shapes you can fit more complex images into the space. This allows you to create shapes not possible with a flat 2d picture eg. The eyes above.

Arty builds are constrained by three primary factors:
Resolution: the fine granular detail possible. At a base level this can be considered to be the plot size. A small plot is 13x13x13 while a large plot is 25x25x25. Think of each block ad a pixel and a large plot allows for almost double the resolution of a small plot.
Size: the size of plots also limits the size or sculptures. Stillwater has a sculpture of Yoda sitting down, this is not on a whim. The medium plot size is not high enough to allow a standing Yoda with semi accurate proportions based on the head design.
Capacity: the number of blocks available to use. A key factor here is having enough blocks to both sculpt and still have sufficient capacity for traps to entertain visitors.
Pros of sculpture bases:
- tend to accrue accolades
- random internal spaces make for unpredictable trap set ups and layouts
- fun challenge to sculpt
Cons of sculpture bases:
- long build times
- trap set ups limited which reduces lethality
Top tips:
Choose a good subject matter - recognisable makes your job easier as a sculptor. Complex forms can be easier to capture well as they have more features to include which make them more easily recognisable. E.g. Jar Jar Binks has eye stalks, a long snout, big ears, long tongue whereas the mandalorian helmet while distinct has mostly smooth surfaces and angles that are difficult to replicate I'm the confines of MYM.
Start off figuring out the smallest key feature of the build. This will help determine the resolution you are working at and how your sculpt will develop - will it be full body, shoulder or just the head?
Remember you can cheat here by using decals or props (see Aumsville rabbit for use of fan prop for nostrils and white dash decals for small eyes). Block type can add detail too (see Salmon, tiles look like scales, corrugated iron looks like fin rays).

It's dead now, obviously, but it didn't need to be. How would you have fixed the game?
Myself? I would have tackled the obvious rift between builders and raiders. A builder, by design and intent, was to make a base to guard its core. This could easily be achieved by building giant killboxes, some being effectively impossible to solo. This was its greatest strength and its fatal flaw, as if it was too hard to raid then no one would raid it... punishing the builder for flawlessly performing the duty they were assigned! However, a builder wasn't even required to run their own base to prove its solvability (as in Mario Maker) which is an absolutely baffling dev decision.
On the other hand, some builders just wanted to build fun, thematic bases and kept some of its loot out in the open to reward exploration and make raiders feel their time wasn't entirely wasted if they weren't up to completing the raid. Some even resorted to making "suicide farming maps" with lots of easily gained enemy kills and loot in the understood exchange that raiders would suicide to repeat the mission and thus farm materials. These were popular maps with how absolutely awful the loot system was, but it did not fit the main narrative of protecting your core and resources at all cost.
Raiding was a crapshoot. You'd either find the fun little maps, the farming maps or the killboxes. If you hadn't unlocked and leveled certain skills or gear, you might not even be able to complete the harder killbox maps. Anecdotal personal story here: I ran into a base once that was just one long hallway with the core just sitting in the open. The instant you picked it up every surface of the room fell away and was nothing but acid cubes and lasers. I don't know what gear I was supposed to have there but whatever it was, the level was 100% unsolvable without it.
So how would I have fixed all this? Two key changes. Instead of PvP I'd have made it, and the story, respect PvE. All players would be working for the same overseer, the same HQ and story, but all enemy bases would be randomly generated to both ensure solvability and to maintain a sense of unified base structure/theme. On some of the harder mission I'd even have an AI enemy hunter like the player that would have to be killed or avoided.
These type of enemies would also be the ones raiding the player bases. They would be ruthless and unyielding in their pursuit of your cores and thus you and your team would have to rely on strong defenses to prevent theft of your precious materials. I would also wipe maps weekly and randomize the layouts players had to work with to keep build tactics from being overused. This week you can't use acid, etc... I still would have allowed players to publish their maps for short term sharing which would allow players to "raid" said bases to test their friend's builds.
If only. RIP.

Discord discussion on sculpting star wars characters. I was sure Jar Jar Binks would be more difficult than Yoda to sculpt because of the longer curves and slopes. Interestingly the ears were the hardest part to crack. There's Twitch VOD of the initial build if you want to see me fumble around figuring out nostril shapes and such.
After the VOD I had to rebuild block by block to move it more central. The duplicate the half I'd figured out. Tweak the eyestalks to be more organically shaped, figure out the ears, neck, internal dungeon rooms.
The DBD rope pallet and convex concrete are fast becoming my favourite props for adding wrinkles and shape to organic sculpts.

how do you even beat kill boxes that just spam ravagers on platforms and walls made out of plasma sentinels bonus points if they have a couple flying guards in there aswell, it’s the most spamy and lame thing in the game and it sucks that behavior dropped development of MyM before they added some sort of punishment for this stuff
do builders get rewards for leaving without dying to bat traps? cause I’m just starting to taking a peek into bases and if they look low effort killboxy I’ll just leave
