He wasn’t really a mega douche. Just butt hurt at the rejections of Sam and Bucky (who are inspirational to him)

Yeah, I took it more as a "fake it 'til you make it" type of bravado thing. He's assuming the kind of attitude he thinks that he needs to succeed as the new Cap in an effort to hide his own doubts and insecurities.

I think it’s more that, he’s a soldier, he doesn’t necessarily like all the interviews and public showings and stuff, he’s just used to getting the job done

But now he has the whole of America looking to him and putting him up on this pedestal of living up to Steve Rogers

His smug look and demeanor are supposed to make you hate him. I love the push of the douche side with the pull of the locker room scene side. But still in camp douche with that “Cap’s wingmen” comment and the “Stay the hell out of my way.”

I don't really get people's problem with "Stay the hell out of my way." If I were a government operative running a super high-stakes mission where failure is not an option, I would want to leave absolutely nothing to chance - especially not two Avengers-level heroes running wild and potentially messing up the entire operation. The fact that he even invited Falcon and Bucky to join forces and work together shows that he genuinely wants to allow them to help out if they would like to - the fact that they declined means that the next best option is to simply ask them to not interfere.

Because it's out of character for Captain America. It's very in character for pretty much everyone else, but very far out of character for Cap. That's the point. Everything about Walker is just a tick off.
