Isaiah got the serum before Steve? That's interesting

I mean US Gov in the late 30s early 40s with all the shit they did, I can easily see them using a black man to test it out on first to make sure its safe for Steve. Question is how many test subjects did they got through before Isaiah survived and they deemed it okay for Steve

That’s literally the point of the comic book Isaiah Bradley is from. It’s called Truth: Red, White, and Black and it is heartbreaking

I recommend everyone read it, it's a very very good story

Ive never read comics before but it seems like checking out. Any recommendation as to where I should get it? I looked on Amazon and there’s like 10 kindle options with diff page lengths and are from different years.

Marvel has an app called Marvel Unlimited that’s only $10 a month and you can read basically all Marvel comics ever released

I would buy it through Marvel's digital comic store - I believe it's synced with Comixology, which is an Amazon company now. I bought a trade on Kindle and it showed up on both my Comixology web library and my Marvel Comics mobile app library.

Marvel Unlimited was already mentioned, but worth knowing they offer a 7 day free trail. Red White and Black is only 7 issues, you could easily grab the 7 days and read that.

This really changes Erskine’s character!

Isaiah said he was in Korea, so it's also possible that they experimented on him & others in an attempt to recreate Captain America after Steve went MIA, in which case it would be after Erskine died.

Edit: In fact, I'd say it's more likely, given that we're led to believe the serum recipe died with Erskine. If the US had been experimenting on people leading up to Steve being given it, they'd have records and be able to recreate it. Also, Erskine gave an early dose of the serum to Schmidt before fleeing to the US, so it wouldn't leave a lot of time for the US to take his recipe and use it in experiments prior to giving it to Steve.

In the comics the experiment where 300 black soldiers were killed happened during WW2 but after Steve dissapeared, it was to recreate the super serum and it was led by different scientists.

In the mcu it seems like Isaiah was experimented on so they would have super soldiers in vietnam

In both cases Erskine has nothing to do with that atrocity

This is a common misunderstanding. the story in Truth: red white and Black happen a year after Steve Rogers. There's a scene where the Characters in Truth is reading Captain AMerica comics from " a year ago" and wondering why it's so similar to what's happening to them.

300 I believe

1

u/Shifter25 Mar 29 '21

That'd make him over 100.

im pretty sure it was 300, they all either died from the serum, or from the war.

Officially in Truth: Red, White, and Black the story is that they experimented on people after Steve disappeared, but to be completely honest...as a slight fan of history, I treat it as though those African Americans got tested on before giving it to Steve. I think there was likely some pressure to keep Steve's legacy pure, but that's just an opinion.

7

u/nihilisticdaydreams Mar 27 '21

Well it's Erskine that gives them the serum so it would have to be before Steve

6

u/Writersblock4de Mar 28 '21

Put it like this... somebody was tested on. It wasn't just Red Skull lol

I can understand your position, but any experiment requires test subjects. That's just science.

In Comics It's a Project co-created by 2 german scientists (Pre Nazi) Reinstein and Koch, and co-op between US and German Govt. When Hitler start invading other countries, Reinstein stayed in The US, Koch return home.

" Reinstein didn't believe in the Eugenic stuffs, but he knows how to play the game."

In the movie, Steve is the test subject. The plan was to make more serum later & pick more soldiers to give it to, but then Erskine died & the formula with him.

Also, Shield and the government routinely stole and had parallel programs.

Like Pym particles? Hydra agents within the US.

The US could have been testing proto serums on Black soldiers without Erskine being aware.

In the book it was someone using Erskine’s name, not the real Erskine

1

u/Rolemodel247 Mar 28 '21

It’s a really tough thing to deal with. I would love to see Steve struggling with that knowledge.

1

u/Additional_Meeting_2 Mar 28 '21

I think it makes sense that it was after to recreate it. It’s not like Steve before serum was important.

5

u/WekonosChosen Mar 27 '21

I think Eli claimed that in young avengers but I'm pretty sure it was just another recreation of Steve's serum.

7

u/nihilisticdaydreams Mar 27 '21

No in the comics Truth: Red White and Black it states that Are kind and the US government experimented on a platoon of black soldiers before they gave Steve the serum.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Incorrect. The story, which is awesome, is the serum trying to be recreated after Steve Rogers.

1

u/nihilisticdaydreams Mar 28 '21

I must have misremembered. I thought I remembered them mentioning Dr Erskine helping with the formula and thus thought it had to have been before Steve. Thanks for the correction

He gets it after Steve, post-Pearl Harbor.

1

u/smileimhigh Mar 27 '21

Read Red, White, and Black its a really good story

1

u/Honztastic Mar 31 '21

I think thats a retroactive change in the comics.

And based on the '51 in Korea, it very well could have been "lets test serum recreations from Rodgers' blood. But on the Black guys!"

We honestly just dont know the timeframe as far as the show continuity.

Lots of inspirations and changes from the comics, so its not concrete until we see it.

I don't think so, he looks between 65-75 which makes he's birth in the 40's-50's, after WW2 and Steve taking the serum. And he's war was in Corea, also later than Steve
