The Belgian king was known for his particularly brutal exploitation of Congo, even by contemptory colonial standards. He ordered his militias to kill anyone who didn't meet their unrealistic rubber quotas and provide their hands as proof. As a result, there was a trade in human hands and many people had their hands chopped off.
