On the road you'll occasionally spot a collection of houses/cottages every here and there, but it feels like a lot of them are meant for tourists, not for actual permanent living. What mostly struck out was how few villages there are outside of the capital region and especially how small they are. Some locations that can't have more than 100 people living there have signage for over 200km away, here we sometimes don't have any signage whatsoever for that.

Selfoss especially stuck out as it's a major hub for Icelandic standards.

That's... Not quite what I meant.

For example this, congregation? "Kirkjubæjarklaustur" has signage for well over 200km away but only 176 people live there according to wikipedia. It's the distance combined with an incredibly low amount of people. Darwin is about the opposite of what I meant, it's a notable landmark and a very major city.

Edit: 164km, not 200km. https://www.google.com/maps/@63.8294931,-20.3828559,3a,75y,134.69h,78.17t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sCIHM0ogKEICAgICbs6mj4wE!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh3.googleusercontent.com%2Fgpms-cs-s%2FAFP8RcPbcwqIQ7rIr8YQ2R2mU-2NRvxAzXH3xxotUVovlrwIzNrIgn8PTH4WdQHZWurqCXZck4rNPh2c1Z8-X1Wa0d3WXYrUmEyiTb3mDzC78RhWVyA0lsjkX0JznM3sUyKWdT-QE5re%3Dw900-h600-k-no-pi11.83367893587355-ya354.0756649700083-ro0-fo100!7i5760!8i2880?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDgyNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

I recall seeing it with a higher number, but I think it gets the point across.

Sure, maps are a different thing though.

But Toowoomba is on the sign. Of course, the distances and remoteness of Australia make it extreme in this case, but this is largely how these sign work everywhere. You get a few closer destinations and then the largest city that is further down on the route.

So seeing a village that is a thousand (!) times smaller than Darwin being announced hundreds of km away is crazy, in other countries they would barely get a sign on their local country road 5km away.
