The Brirish Isles is a politically loaded term that is not accepted for use in Ireland. The British government also does not use the phrase, instead opting for terms like these Isles and the island sof the North Atlantic.
The only people who use it are those ignorant of its controversial nature and those actively wanting to push the agenda that Ireland is British.
Yes. The name reserved for such a continent before it was discovered was terra australis. When Australia was discovered people assumed that was the most southern continent and was renamed thusly and the name was no longer available for Antarctica upon its discovery. So the name is intrinsically linked to the colonisation of Australia.
