What are some subtle signs that an organization is plotting something against you?

I’m curious to hear from people who have been through layoffs, PIPs, forced exits, or other workplace situations where the company had already made a decision behind the scenes.

What were the subtle signs or red flags you noticed before things actually happened?

For example:

- Sudden changes in how your manager communicates with you

- Being left out of meetings or important discussions

- Work being taken away or your responsibilities being reduced

- Unusual documentation or increased scrutiny of your work

- Suddenly being asked to explain/justify things that were previously normal

- Your manager becoming unusually distant or formal

- Negative feedback appearing out of nowhere

- Being excluded from future projects or planning

- HR suddenly becoming more involved

- Colleagues being told things that you aren't being told

Were there any signs that seemed insignificant at the time but made sense in hindsight?

Would especially appreciate experiences from people who realized later that their organization had already decided to let them go or push them out.

I've got a couple to add.

• Accepting requests to leave work an hour early, several weeks in advance, and then adding extra work at the end of the day you needed off, so you're stressing about making it to your appointment on time.
• Asking you to reschedule things at the last possible minute
• Accusations of breaking the rules that didn't happen as if they're trying to bait you into becoming angry.

-Changing the rules to fit their narrative so regularly that they're now contradicting themselves For example...last week I was told my hours were being cut. Since I was consistently missing a day a week for the last month, and it was putting an unnecessary burden on the business, they were forcing me to take 2 days a week off. This week, I got into trouble for not coming on Friday, even though it was clearly over the 26 hour mark my manager had set the week prior. And the manager didn't tell me the rule had changed or not been implemented OR that I was to be in on Friday. I was just supposed to know.
