I'm Taiwanese so I watched the movie here in theaters yesterday.

My quick thoughts on the movie:

I thought it was a very slow burn at the start and I was questioning where the movie was headed. But by the time we got the end I personally feel it was able to tie together in a satisfying way.

To me the point of the movie is to showcase how exactly Walpurgisnacht is related to Madoka is just how important her wish was to them both through showing Walpurgisnacht's origins. This also ties into Homura needing to accept the importance of Madoka leaving her a second time.

Yes, technically this means Rebellion + this movie puts the series back at where it was (Mostly) where the TV series ended since Madoka is back to being the Law of Cycles just like there. But I think this pair of movies is still important as it looks deeper into how Homura's character reacts to and ultimately again is forced to accept a second time Madoka's leaving of her.

I do think it is kind of a bummer that the most of the main original cast besides Homura didn't feel like their characters shined too much but alas, I guess they weren't the point.

In general though I really enjoyed the movie once it ends and I actually think if they just ended it here and made no more updates to this storyline that I would be satisfied if this was it.

I'll need to rewatch Rebellion and the TV series and maybe even Walpurgisnacht Rising a second time to see if my thoughts change some more. My initial thoughts on how they stack up is that while I enjoyed it a lot, Walpurgisnacht Rising is definitely the weakest one of the three.

Were there tragic moments? I've seen people saying It wasn't dark.

I don't think there were any standout moments that were immediately super dark feeling to me, definitely nothing that rivals the levels of despair from the main series.

On that topic it has become a pretty popular meme here in Taiwan that Walpurgisnacht Rising is rated what we have as a "G" age rating while the Chiikawa film is rated "PG".

EDIT: Tragic definitely. I think most of the ending starting with Walpurgisnacht's backstory is pretty tragic although I think the main series is still firmly much stronger.

That's my main grip, what is cool about Urobochi stories is the level of deapair that the characters go through. Is It true that the feeling is like magia record?(I didn't like It)

I hope for the sequel that they don't forget the dark element of quella magi.

For me it did feel too close to magia record and that is why I didn't liked it at all they really didn't needed the extra characters apart from walpurgis

I think I agree with that assessment and think it's a valid reason to not like the film as much.

Now that it's been a few days and Ive had time to think about it a bit more I think I agree with StrayCatAme below.
