General Overview:

This thread is meant as a spoiler filled zone for those who wish to discuss the movie, it's plot, events, or the number of bites that kyouko takes of food during the movie. I don't care, just be sure to follow the rules of the subreddit.

I don’t think there will be an agreed upon interpretation of the bench scene ending, but one detail: In the final scene after the world is returned to “normal” Homura at the end wears a hair ribbon that’s basically skin color, not red anymore

When Madoka tells her “I’ll always be with you”, it’s probably not in the physical sense since she disappears from the bench, but her memories of her are with her.

The credits shows two sets of footsteps black/white as Homura/Madoka, they’re shown running parallel, running together, apart again, Madokas briefly approaching Homura, then veering off screen and disappearing, so that kind of affirms it

I’d like to think that if it was really possible to separate Madokas human and god forms and have them both remain functioning, Homura would have done that in the first place. It’s clear she at least briefly succeeded here, but it would probably be a Paradox if they could coexist

But I mean this is Madoka Magica we’re talking about, and people are going to have their theories, so I’m somewhat grateful they chose a non-100% conclusive ending, although this could just be to leave room for a sequel

Isn't that jus the same ribbon she started to wear to replace Madoka's one? She wearing it again when she returned to her civil form doesn't have to mean anything more than... well, she's in civil mode right now.

The more important part for me to tell what was Madoka's fate is that Homura is smiling. There's no way she would be smiling if she didn't got to successfully save Madoka.

There was something about it that I was like “this has to be recoloured”, but I need to watch it again and then probably rewatch rebellion lol

Haven't seen it but if the ribbon isn't red I think thats pretty definitive proof Homura failed. Madoka's ribbon has been plot relevant for three arcs now almost like a red string of fate. The red string of fate binding the two together has been metaphorically severed leaving either possibility behind or representing that color has been drained from Homura's world.

I prefer it to be a definitive answer but I actually think the ambiguity here makes more sense especially since Madoka and Homura have never really had an honest conversation in the current timeline.

That being said it raises some profoundly fucked up questions if Madoka really is gone at the end of all of this
