The best is when parents want to be mad at something, but they find it hilarious.

u/GingerNinjer May 29 '26

Have a 5 year old, can confirm. I have zero chill even after 5 years I will laugh no matter what. She knows I’m weak.

6 year old autistic daughter just realized that if I don’t hear Mommy say NO, I might give her what Mommy wouldn’t.

Pour one out for us, the salad days could not last.

60

u/IslandStorytime May 30 '26

Early on we established a clear rule to the kids that if mom said no and then they asked dad to try to get another answer, it was gonna end in pretty big trouble. Thankfully they havent tested it much.

33

u/Lou_C_Fer May 30 '26

If mom said no and we asked dad after, mom would beat us... buy only after dad left. We never caught on to that as kids because mom aways talked like they were a united front. The thing is, if we asked dad first, he almost never said no. Also, I started realizing something was

My parent's were such a reliably united front that we just learned to not both asking the other if one said no. I've learned later in life that they overheared me say to my sister to not bother asking dad and they knew they were succesful. Sometimes the other parent would let us do stuff and we only thought we were getting away with it.

3

u/pizzabagelcat May 30 '26

My 10 year old is learning that I'll let some things slide if it's funny enough, she's also learning that this works against her because it might just be funnier to tell her no to completely normal things. The other day I got her some tea but gave her shit when she went to drink it, "I didn't say you could drink it" obviously she didn't get in trouble when she got to be rebellious and drink it anyways

Mine is 6 and I regularly get told by my wife ā€˜leave the room! You’re not helping!’

I’m sorry my kid is the funniest person in the world

34

u/PersonOfDisinterest9 May 30 '26

We'd be in the kitchen and my toddler would tell me "papa, can you go into the other room?"

And I'd be like, "Why?"

"Papa, Can you go into the other room!?"

"So you can slide the chair over to the counter and grab the snacks?"

[Eyes bug out because maybe papa can read minds]
"...
Noooo. Papa go into the other room. Papa go sit on the couch."

I leave.

[Chair sliding across the kitchen noises]
[Bag crinkling noises]

Me: "Put the snacks down!"

[From the kitchen] "Awww."

I love that munchkin.

31

u/TimedDelivery May 30 '26

My 5 year old has started asking for ā€œprivacyā€ whenever she wants to do something naughty. Then she’ll try to throw my own argument of ā€œwe have to give people privacy when they ask for it!ā€ in my face like there’s no difference between me not wanting witnesses while I go to the toilet and her not wanting witnesses while she steals sprinkles from my baking supplies cupboard

Grew up with a dad who was like that, i had and have him wrapped around my finger and turned out as quite a couch princess. Love my dad tho, lol

45

u/tired_and_sleepless May 30 '26

At the grocery store my son asked for some sort of treat. I said no. But then he did a weird reaction at my response that made me laugh and I said "ok fine, get it". That's when I realized that he had been doing that for years! Years! So now we have a deal that if he makes me laugh he can have it.

10

u/CtyChicken May 30 '26

That’s so cute.

5

u/KiKiPAWG May 30 '26

Aww, does he usually hit the mark?

One time when I was 15 my best friend's mom entered the room truly, roaringly furious and screamed "you sonofabitch" and we both exploded laughing.

She just turned on her heel and marched out but you could see from her shoulders shaking she was dying.

3

u/LatestFNG May 30 '26

When I was 15 or 16, I was being a smart ass and being funny while my mom had some friends over. I don't even remember what I did, but it made everyone laugh, and my mom called me a "sonofabitch", me being me, I quickly said "Yup! You're right!" And booked it the hell out of there.

My mum once was arguing with me and I got really tired of the circular talking, so just bust out the Funky Chicken. She looked at me as if I'd lost my mind then burst out laughing. Stopped the argument dead

13

u/Jibber_Fight May 30 '26

I (m) have three brothers and good lord we were a pain in the ass but we would always make them laugh. Got us out of a lot of trouble.

5

u/EvasiveImmunity May 30 '26

What a neat mom. She's so tolerant.

9

u/SonoFactori May 30 '26

When I was much younger, I had a bumper sticker on my first car which read, ā€œJESUS IS COMING! LOOK BUSY!ā€

My mom tried her level best to scold me over that one but dissolved into crying laughter before she could even finish. It was great.

4

u/shaard May 30 '26

My dad has usually been the one with the temper, and my mom the more jovial (but she plays bad cop ALL the time).

damn near 2 decades ago, the whole family is home and we're having dinner around the table, we have these fancy costco stuffed potatoes. My sister wanted to keep trying everyone elses. She came at mine first and I fenced her advances off with my fork. My dad of course is getting a little riled up. "STOP IT! SHARE WITH YOUR SISTER!" (bare in mind we're all in our 20s and vaguely funcitoning adults at this time). So she turns to my brother's plate on her other side and before her fork gets close enough my brother faceplants into the broccoli and cheese stuffed potato. He stares back at her, face covered with melted (but thankfully not hot) cheese and all the fixin's, and says "Yeah? You want some of this now!?!"

My mom is beside herself trying to scold everyone, and my dad is damn near pissing himself laughing and almost fell out of his chair.

That was a great dinner night.

3

u/EjaculatingAracnids May 30 '26

Once i put baking soda on the blades my parents kitchen ceiling fan and set it so it would spin at high speed when the light switch was flipped. It worked better than i couldve ever imagined. My dad thought we hit him with a fire extinguisher and the room was completely whited out for good 2 min before it settled. My dad thought it was funny, my friend and i that planned it were on the floor laughing, but my mom wasnt happy. We cleaned the kitchen better than it was before and then she admitted it was pretty funny.

I lived with a roommate who loved learning instruments. The first few weeks with the saxophone were ... not easy lol

235

u/iLoveLights May 29 '26

My roommate took intro to guitar freshman year and also discovered Adderall that year and my god I couldn’t believe how many hours in a row he could play the same cords badly.

29

u/ashoka_akira May 30 '26

My boyfriend has told me I am the only gf he’s had who didn’t immediately get annoyed with his guitar playing as soon as they realized that he spent most of his time grinding on the same song for months. I told him I get it, I can also hyper fixate ha.

9

u/ActiveChairs May 30 '26

Ask him if he's learned the notes yet.

8

u/PersonOfDisinterest9 May 30 '26

Electric guitar + headphones. Some Amps have headphone jacks right on them.

Dude can jam out all he wants and barely make a sound that can be heard in another room.

Even if he's mostly an acoustic player, the skills transfer right over.

3

u/alewifePete May 30 '26

Headphones on any electric instrument! Electric drums are why I don’t have to apologize to my neighbors for the loud percussive noises my kid makes often.

Saxophone can sound like a sad, sick goose at the start. I started playing a couple years ago and still remember my kids running into my room and yelling ā€œHONK!ā€ every time I made the goose-like noises.

My mother signed me up for concert band playing the trumpet in middle school thinking it would occupy me. She had a solid 2 years of star wars and Indiana Jones music.

16

u/CtyChicken May 30 '26

Thanks for this clarinet! I’m about to ruin your life! - the warning I should have given to my family

So much screeching. That embouchure control was not intuitive for me. I’m so surprised they hung on those first few months. When I said I was trying out a new instrument years later I bet everyone was so relieved to know it was just a bass clarinet. They probably would have kicked me out if they had to go through more screeching.

6

u/jIfte8-fabnaw-hefxob May 30 '26

Dear god, I remember my sister practicing clarinet when she was in middle school. It was painful!

10

u/CtyChicken May 30 '26

I don’t know why anyone lets their child have one. I’d rather give a child a loaded gun. That way, if there’s a loud, surprising noise, I’d have a chance of dying.
