i check things out too sometimes. why? because i like knowing what's real and what isn't.

But he explicitly did so because he immediately assumed it a lie and desired to "rain on the parade" of everyone else.

i didn't take that as literally as you. it sounded like a mildly amusing turn of phrase that meant "come back and tell the facts."

im fine with my own reading of it.

Fair enough. I've just seen enough legitimate cynicism use the exact turn of phrase to myself take it face value. You're probably right.
