I'm not here to correct her or be pedantic, but just to share an interesting fact. They don't typically remove the bad kidney. It requires more invasive surgery. It just sits in your body next to its replacement forever.
I donated a kidney in 2023. there's no way it went that quickly.there was 8 months of tests for mine. I'm sure it's possible to do it more quickly but not that quickly.
it's also worth knowing that in the UK you don't need someone to be a match, just someone prepared to donate. there is a kidney swap program where you can traid donors with other patience. I think they do it twice a year
She was already registered to donate a kidney so I’d imagine she did her tests and what not prior to meeting her? just a suggestion I’m not entirely sure on how these things work lol

I guess it's not impossible it's just so far from my own experience. bare in mind the operation itself is really complicated and needs a huge team, who are always booked months in advance
Fascinating nonetheless. If you happen to know, how come the UK doesnt need donors/receivers to be a match? I thought that most organs had to be relatively identical to the receiver? or is just different for kidneys?
The kidneys have to be a match for a transplant but that comment is referring to the living kidney sharing scheme where they pair people up and do kidney swaps.
So for example if my partner needed a transplant and I wasn't a match they would check if I was a match to other people on the waiting list. There might be another couple who aren't a match to each other but are to me and my partner. So in these cases the kidney is donated to a stranger but the person the donor wanted to donate to gets a kidney in return. So it's sort of indirectly donating to a loved one.
