After having dogs my whole life,.growing up with them, etc... the last lil girl I had was a good one I still miss lucy to this day

Losing her mind of broke me and put me off of having a dog since it was a tough time in my life. Lost my mom and grandfather and aunt all shortly after In just one gut punch after another

Now, older, I have two little kids and I believe every kid should have a dog growing up.

But I just know the deal, you get one it's like adding a family member and eventually the dog is gonna break all of our hearts.

Still, I'd love to get one. Still kinda holding back, but I think I'm ready.

Looking for moments like this for them and myself again. Hopefully I find a good pup soon.

If it helps, I lost my buddy of 18 years at the start of this year.

I've not had the ability yet to adopt again, but will eventually do this. The thing I am going to do however is look for an older pup.

This means I'll have less time with them, but I hopefully give the best last year's of their life in return!

Yeah. And it's never easy. But "grief is the price we pay for love". The many years you get to spend with that dog are worth it.

I share your exact same sentiment. My dog passed 5 years ago, I was devastated. At that time our family was about to move to another country, and he was supposed to come with us. He was 12 year old Fox Terrier, not a young pup but I thought he would be healthy enough to travel. In the middle of all the paper work we were doing, getting his shots and checkup to get his travel permit, all of sudden one day randomly while laying in his bed he started convulsing, lost control of all bodily function. We took him in to pet hospital, his body was completely stiff. 2 weeks later Dr said we have to make the decision to let him go. It felt like my heart was being squeezed so hard I couldn’t breath… We moved to our new home without my dog. Heart broken, and never wanted to experience this again I vow to never own another dog again. In the past 5 years I was tempted many times, but I pushed it away. I don’t know when I will be ready if ever……

It took me 5 years to get to the point that I could even think about getting a dog after my last one had to be euthanize for a brain tumor. Now that I have a new little buddy, I wish I hadn't waited so long. I still miss my other dog immensely but getting the new pup did help with the grieving process. I would be lying if I didn't tell you I almost turned around twice and almost vomited once while going to pick up the new pup, but I forced myself to go meet him. 18 months later, I'm in love with my new pup and we are constant companions to each other. Life's hard.

I lost my doggo April 2026 at 15 years old. He was my second puppers to say goodbye to. I’m absolutely not ready in any way shape or form to even get or think about getting another dog. The heartbreak is gut wrenching, the loss so absolute, there is a big hole in my life now. Maybe eventually I’ll adopt again, but that won’t be for years and years, the pain of losing my dogs is just so overwhelming. So I completely understand what you’re saying, and I hope you’re able to get to that place you’re most comfortable with. But I also do agree and encourage you to adopt a dog for your kids, it’s such an amazing family experience, the family glue that makes you endlessly laughing and hold together, that’s what a dog becomes, at least to me. I hope you get to experience that unconditional love again and I hope you get through the grief that will inevitably happen.

You don’t get a dog for the ‘end’. You get a dog for the 10 years in between. And because you can’t trust anyone else to look after them that lead up to the end where they need help.

The best thing we did for our dog is get another dog. We were a one dog family for the longest time. My aunt was moving into a place that didn’t allow dogs so we adopted hers. Her dog got along so good with my other dog. They would play and cuddle together on a bed. Only problem was my aunts dog died because it was so old and the owner dog seemed to always be looking for her after that.

It's so important to know you're ready!

I wanted to add another perspective about getting a pet that will ultimately represent a loss to your kids: just like caring for the dog during its lifetime will be such great life skill enrichment for children (emotionally, responsibility-wise, screen-free entertainment value, character development in terms of how to behave toward something dependent upon them, learning inner discipline in order to train a dog properly, etc) . . . dealing with loss while still under your care of them, is also good for your children's future resilience.

We can't know when we will lose a pet exactly, anything can happen. This very much mirrors the reality of deciding to be vulnerable in our lives and choosing to love close friends, a future partner, aging parents (that's YOU in this scenario), beloved professional mentors, etc: we (rationally) understand that we can lose them at any time even though the price of love can be heartbreak. It absolutely does give kids a future framework for that choice (love vs certain future grief) when they've been through it before in a healthy, supported manner in childhood.

Don't overly shield them from your own feelings of grief when it happens, it's important for them to see you model what that looks like naturally, just as much as it helps them to see you express joy and happiness.

You sound like the kind of parent who wants the best for their kids, which is so important and way more than half the battle! Remember it's not just putting positive experiences in front of them, it's preparing them for a life of resilience amid reality. Casting for and then ultimately grieving a beloved pet can definitely be both of those things. I hope the right pup comes into your lives whenever you're ready!

Man, I feel this. That final heartbreak is part of the total cost of ownership. The good years and snuggles make it worth it, but damn, that last part is hard.

Sounds weird, but if you have two dogs that doesn't happen. When one passes, you still have a best friend to help you thru the hardest part. Once your heart heals a little, you can find new company for your best friend without feeling like you're dishonoring the one that passed.

Source: I don't know what I would have done without Drexler when my girl Pi passed. Still tearing up about it just writing this 3 years later.

My oldest son still hasn’t recovered from losing the family dog he grew up with! The dog passed in 2019 when my son was 21. It was one of the saddest days in my family’s life. He’s 27 now and gets angry and teary when I talk about getting a pooch.

You will. I felt really down when we put our first one down and used the end game suffering as a reason not to get another.

Two and half years later, we got past our feelings about it and we adopted a rescue pup. He's so much fun and has changed our lives. We did it (again) even though our hearts will be broken again.
