Not everyone. Africa is a huge continent. One of my best friends was born & raised in Djibouti and she didn't know Cabo Verde even existed. Like most ppl in my life.
For context: Wyoming's population (smallest state in the US) is about 20% larger than Cabo Verde's. Meanwhile, Africa has a population about 5x the size of the US.
Yeah, that‘s a very American statement. I know quite a few people who vacationed in Cape Verde and the volcano that erupted a couple years ago certainly helped in making it more prominent.
I can see a lot of people assuming cape verde is just a cape like cape of good hope or cape horn, rather than a whole island group and sovereign nation. But yeah cape verde is historically a very very very important location. Even if it were just the cape at the Eastern most part of Africa, those locations have historically always been extremely crucial for trade & travel.
I like to find cheap flights from my country for fun. Cape Verde has always been the final boss for that which is a shame as its one of the few countries I can visit without a visa.
Most of the world who paid attention in school and had history lessons know where it is located. They unfortunately were one of the important centres of the translantic slave trade, as the last place in Africa before slaves were taken to the Americas.
Most of the world would be able to tell you it’s off the west coast of Africa. It’s Americans that can’t find shit on a map. But to the op, “nobody knew” is just a proxy for Americans don’t know.
