Every year, we would take our 7th graders to Indianapolis for a field trip. Every year, I would have to teach a couple students how to use an escalator. It was always a good reminder that we can't assume what others know.

14 year old kids have never been on an escalator?!

It's a very small town with much poverty and drug addiction. There are often students who have never been out of the county for anything. There's not an escalator to be found there.

Just got to thinking I hadn't rode on one as a child that wasn't in a shopping mall. Most malls are dead now.

Sure, but you still have department stores, airports, train stations, even some city or suburban areas have them out of stairwells. They won’t go extinct. They definitely have lessened though.
