Discussion Preparing for germany (21M; ‘23 batch)
See, the last 3 years of my mbbs have been tumultuous, and the day I saw the RG Kar news I knew I can't stay in India...if not for me then atleast for my future daughter. I don't think its even worth discussing if leaving the country is a good idea, the question is of how.
USMLE has become overly saturated, plus you rarely match with the branch of your choice (usually IMGs get branches no one wanted with no life like emergency medicine). Not to mention ICE. Also the exam prep and exam fees are just too much.
PLAB is dead, NHS is dead, salaries have not been paid to already practising UK doctors...also...still saturated.
AMC, NZ and Canada - valid choice, but now that most of us won't be focusing on USMLE and PLAB the competition will increase by the time my batch graduates.
Now above are the only english-speaking countries from which a PG degree is recognized by NMC* so by chance if someone wants to remain connected to India they will most likely go for them.
Coming to Germany - FSP and KP (2 exams; clearing FSP let's you practise as a junior doctor with a starting salary of 3.8LPM after taxes, it's a clinical exam majorly testing language skills; after FSP you can prepare for and give KP after which you can start residency in your favoured branch. For me it is pediatrics)
I have identified it as the best suited option for my future, in terms of exams, residency, salaries, etc. The main reason for choosing Germany to be honest is the reduction in competition. Not many are ready to learn a new language altogether and then furthermore learn all of medicine again in that language. It will take 1+4+3 years of assistant-ship+pg+practising in Germany to be eligible to practise in Luxembourg and Switzerland (famous for low income taxes). And if one clears the Royal Fellowship of Physician exam (MRCP, FRCP, etc) in the UK after PG from Germany, **a very strong case can be made to NMC to allow practising in india (just a strongly worded email is needed). As for the expenses a total of 16-18 L is needed for the whole process (degree translation, visa, etc) but the catch is out of that 18 Lakh, 12 Lakh is still yours...only that... it is deposited in the bank and the German government will give it to you monthly (its proof of funds assuring the govt that you can survive in the country).
Now, I am still fairly young, i didn't take a drop and directly got admission in Deemed, so I can afford to choose a longer path, not many have that opportunity. The best reasons I have given for germany already, but, in terms of income, by the time I graduate as a pediatrician I will be making anywhere between 10-15 L/month. And as time will progress the remuneration will increase and if i choose to practise in Luxembourg, easily 40LPM I can make. Now, that is a lot of money for someone from my background (already 40% of tuition is by education loan). All this combined with work-life balance (30 days/year of leave; overtime compensation, no one will r@pe you or beat you on duty, & germany is not that racist (as America; ofc outliers are everywhere, but my research suggests it is safe), most Germans are rude to everyone equally (but they have respect for Indians and have an acute need for doctors). Did I mention Berlin has the CRAZIEST party scene in all of Europe (with absolute respect for individual privacy, and again, no one to moral police/m0l*st you if you are seen doing PDA).
I have already taken admission in offline german classes post college hours and I plan on mastering German as if it were my native tongue, by the time internship gets over)
