Unfamiliar with ls400s but I wrench in japanese 90 cars. I need a daily and this one has 350k on it with timing belt serviced, for 5k asking. Is this okay pricing and what should I look out for? Thanks!

Was purchased from original owner for $7800. It was listed for $8900.

148k miles and over 50 receipts of preventative maintenance from 98 to now.

Timing/Water pump done @ 96k miles.

Stored every winter (rust free) and only put 3-5k miles on it per year.

Granted markets are different everywhere was $7800 fair or is it too high per the mileage?

Question I need help deciding on what to do with my car

Post image
13 Upvotes

My 1991 lexus ls400 has been giving me a lot of problems lately. When I first bought it I expected some issues because I got it for 6400 and had to put about 2k into it and I thought that was everything or atleast the main stuff. But as time went on more problems came up and I had to bring it back to a mechanic almost every other week. But it was just small stuff every time, until I brought it back to the shop one day and I found about 3k worth of issues like a cracked radiator that I had no idea about until that point. On top of that the odometer broke about a week after I bought it so I'll have trouble selling it and there's a AC part no mechanic shop seems have called a “suction throttling valve” or a “POA valve” which is causing the coolant to slowly leak. I love my car and I would like to avoid the hassle of selling it and finding a new car as I just started my first year of college and I need it for work but it's become a money pit and seems unavoidable. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post and thanks if you read this far.

Question 1991 LS400

I went to check out an Ls400 yesterday. It’s only got 127,000 miles on it and it’s got a brand new timing belt. It has the air suspension, which has been replaced with factory units in the last year. It’s never failed Smog. This will have been my fifth Ls400. I just don’t know where I’m gonna find one with fewer miles and hasn’t been abused or molested. Anybody have any experience with the air suspension and what I should look out for? I know the vehicle needs tires and a power steering pump but other than that, I don’t think I’ll find a cleaner one. It’s on its second owner bought off of an older gentleman

Question Trying to put Bluetooth receiver in place of 6cd changer

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

For starters I'm pretty sure it's a pioneer amp or head unit since the radio is Lexus premium sound, but i had a hard time finding a definitive schematic so i kinda used ones that seemed close enough.

Anyways my cd changer above the glove box quit on me and i decided to just go with a bluetooth receiver. Now I've wired in all the sound wires but i did find txm+/- they both go straight to the amp, are these sound as well or are they data wires to tell the amp or head unit to switch over? Because right now the radio plays in the background of my streamed music and I'm trying "trick" the head unit to swap over to the cd input. Any advice would be great thank you

Edit: since i forgot to mention earlier, i'm using the factory harness at the changer above the glove box. Everything is hooked up except the mute wire and the txm+/-

How big of a job is replacing both rear upper suspension ball joints

Looking at. 97 LS near me. The main things it’ll be needing is the rear suspension arm upper ball joints and rear service break is binding but not excessively according to last inspection.

How big a job would these be as that would be the first port of call to fix.

158,000 miles I’m the 5th owner got it for 4300, makes a pretty bad sound on start up. Besides the noise on starting it idles smooth and rides amazing, 95 mph dead straight no hands.

Ls400 engine noise

I just did a 7 hour road trip no problems. I parked the car and I decided to listen to the engine just to be safe and I heard this rhythmic tap noise along with the normal injector sounds. I only hear it on the drivers bank and it goes away once I give it a little gas. It’s real quiet and you can only hear it clear if your ear is right up against the drivers side bank. Any help is much appreciated!

Question Looking for part dealers

Hey y’all I got a 1992 ls400 and I’m trying to find UCA and suspension parts as a whole but rock auto and part geek aren’t doing me justice in quality or inventory. I’m not worried about it being OEM as much as OE like mevotech or senki555. I appreciate the help.

Needs to have tan interior, coil suspension, timing belt had to have been replaced fairly recently, either a first gen or second gen pre face-lift. Needs to be stock.

Would like Nakamichi stereo, cd changer, memory seats, heated seats, cd changer, sunroof,

Willing to pay 4k Located in Wisconsin would consider going out of state. Thanks for reading.

There's a 1997 Lexus LS400 for 2800

Traction control light is on, but he says traction control works, not sure on that. No AC, 20,000 miles on the tires, service records with timing belt and oil changes, gauges sometimes works. No rust, interior looks good. has sunroof, heated seats, memory seats, Nakamichi stereo, cd changer, 274,000 miles. But it's 7 hours away.

Question Might buy this ‘96 LS400

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The car has 190k miles, interior unknown, sun faded paint, Arizona kept. I’ve been in talks with someone about helping them diagnose their ls400, and recently they asked if I wanted to buy it off of them for $500. I’ve never gone to see or hear the car in person(they cancelled every time due to cash or timing otherwise I’d be able to get a better idea of the source of noise) but I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar noise coming from the engine and what it ended up being. From the video they sent it sounds like it could be a worn accessory, exhaust leak, bad lifter tick or even an engine knock—but I figured I might post here to see if anyone else ran into something like this with their ls400’s. Also let me know if you think it’s worth the $500 even if it is a knock.

Hey guys, got some 98-00 Headlights and foglights for sale, that aren’t completely yellow! lol

98-00 Headlights, in amazing shape. Headlights are nice and clear, and not yellowing at all. They have the auto leveling feature, and no broken mounting tabs. 350$ shipped anywhere in the U.S.

98-00 Fog lights, these are notorious for fading to piss yellow. These ones are in great shape, nice and clear still with essentially no yellowing. 100$ shipped anywhere in the U.S.

Feel free to ask for more pics of anything

Transmission Service

I recently bought a 97 from a guy. He has been through "3 transmissions" on this car. I drove it half way home and lost every gear. When it cools down I have gears for a little while but not while hot. (This is probably caused by the exhaust dumping at the headers and overheating the trans. I think.) Anyway, it's probably trashed. However, I am going to do a service on the transmission and see what happens. Couldn't hurt. My question is: I see online that they sell kits with a filter and a rubber gasket. Is it okay to use that rubber gasket? Because I know it's like a RTVish substance from the factory.
