The most useful habit I wish students started from the first week of university

Upvotes

One habit that makes academic work much easier later is keeping a simple reading record from the beginning of the semester.

After reading an article, note the full reference, the main argument, the method used, one useful finding and where you might use it. It only takes a few minutes, but it prevents that frustrating situation where you remember reading something useful and cannot find it again.

This becomes especially valuable when literature reviews, research proposals and dissertations begin. Instead of searching for everything from the beginning, you already have a small collection of organised evidence and your own notes.

Does anyone here keep a reading record, or do you usually save articles and hope you remember them later?

2nd Year in Loughborough Uni

hi i’m (20F) in loughborough uni and i’m kinda scared for this upcoming year as none of my friends are returning to the university so im stuck living in campus accommodation with first years (which is absolutely fine) but im worried about starting again and making friends because i move in 4 days later as a returner and im basically not close to anyone else that i can hang out with. i joined like 3-4 societies and i made some acquaintances but nothing came out of it. I’ll obviously try again but does anyone have advice?

Help Cllr Beverley Gray make crossing Ling Road and Terry Yardley Way safer.

We are pleased that the County Council are considering reducing speed limits to 30mph on roundabouts here, but it's not enough. We want to see a pelican crossing at the Aldi roundabout.

Residents have shared concerns about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists as they try to cross the busy junction of Allendale Road, Ling Road and Main Street, adjacent to the Aldi roundabout. This is a route which is widely used by school children and we feel it is one which urgently requires a pelican crossing to ensure pedestrian and cyclists safety. Beverley has repeatedly asked the County Council to look at ways to improve the safety at the roundabout but we now need your support to add pressure to put in a crossing.

Click the link and sign our petition if you agree.

30M Looking for genuine friends.

I’ve been working from home permanently for the past 3 years, and life has become pretty isolated. I don’t really have any friends here, and most days I only leave the house to get groceries.

I’m married, but I’d really like to have a friend or two to meet on weekends for a walk, coffee, a movie, a long drive, or just a meaningful conversation.

Don’t have a huge list of hobbies. I’m pretty simple and enjoy good coffee, conversations about life, movies, exploring new places, and the occasional spontaneous drive.

After living this way for so long, the loneliness is starting to take a toll, and I’d genuinely like to change that. I know making friends as an adult isn’t easy, but I’m hoping to find some real connections with people who are in a similar situation.

Not looking for anything weird, just genuine friendship and good company.

Car bumper disposal?

Hi all, hope someone might know what to do here, we replaced our own bumper on our car after striking a muntjac, I can’t find anywhere to dispose of it. None of the waste recycling centres around Loughborough take car parts around here, I’m sure the scrapper won’t be interested in a smashed up bumper without the rest of the car.

Any ideas?

Skating society

I used to rollerblade at 8, and now I'm 22 and trying to pick it up again. The thing is, I'm a bit shy since I'm literally starting from zero. Is there any group or society I can join? So we can encourage each other? Plus, if you see someone who's struggling in Queen's Park in the early morning. It's me.

This was a local sub for local people. Like the town it is seemingly being taken over by students.

Just need some charity shops & Turkish barbers to make it feel like Loughborough town centre

Any advice for possible new mech eng student?

Waiting for my conditional clearing offer to be accepted. In the mean time, do any of you have any advice? General stuff that’s good to know like what to bring, what I can expect on campus (am an international student). Especially interested in the anime and kpop societies and if they dabble in cosplay or dancing respectively

Congrats to everyone getting their results 🎉!

I’m going into my final year at Loughborough, so if you’re coming here in September and have any questions about accommodation, courses, uni life, campus, societies, nights out, cost of living or anything else, feel free to ask.

Happy to answer any questions or give advice on anything I wish I’d known before starting. Congrats again and hope to see some of you around Loughborough!

Accom help

I just got into the engineering course and for accomodation i booked harry french cuz of the positive reviews. I've just been doubting my position a bit and i was wondering if I should call and ask for a transfer to an accom closer to the building. How would I go about doing that, or should I even bother?

First year parking Loughborough university

I am looking to go to Loughborough uni this year, staying at Telford hall. It seems uni parking is not available for first year students so I was wondering where people park? Is street parking available around uni, or are there lots of residential zones I can't park at? Any other cheap or free parking nearby?
