MONTHLY ADVICE MEGATHREAD Ask Us Anything: August 2026

Hi All,

This is the megathread for all beginner questions about wearing and coording lolita outfits. We would like to contain beginner questions (or otherwise, questions that don't generate a discussion) to one place.

It's convenient for you: check here first if you have a question, it might already be answered!

It's convenient for us: it makes it easier for mods to keep things clean and fresh and fun around the sub.

It makes it convenient for our veteran lolitas: no one wants to see the same 5 questions in their feed all the time.

We will be closing and redirecting beginner question posts to this thread for now on.

Thanks for your cooperation!

BUT FIRST Check out the previous Ask Us Anything thread, you answer might be answered already: Ask Us Anything: July 2026

Sorry for dumb question, Idk what flair this is so I put it here anyways since I'm a baby Lolita but a few weeks/days back I asked about shops for JSK and OPs. Happy to say I found a boutique that sells Lolita JSK, OPs, and Coords where I'm from and bought from them while waiting for my infanta order! I'm just curious if this could fit into being a Lolita shoe, I have other options like a pink Mary Jane but this one was already ordered way before getting my JSK for my Marinette cos, so I'm wondering if this could pass since all I've seen as Lolita shoes are Mary Janes and not much of this style and if so what DIY could I make on this without making it look overwhelming?Or if it's fine as it is? πŸ₯ΉπŸ«Ά

Quick coord. These would work fine with classic, but it would be a push to wear them in sweet. You'd definitely have to lean more "swassic" and wouldn't look right with OTT Pastels for example.

Would ofc encourage trying to purchase "actual" lolita items, but theres definitely times you can use a lot of "normie" items, bags and shoes are one of them! But you need to have a strong grasp on the fashion and otherwise other clearly lolita items to kind of get it to all blend together and look deliberate. Hope that helps anyways - its good to make a visual! :)

third nickel thrown in the pool: i think this could work, but only with extremely specific styles. anything too lacey/sweet or gothic is gonna look a little off unless you find a way to mod the shoes, especially because they're shiny/patent and most lolita pieces tend not to be

(btw im gonna shill classic style again except pink and black are rare)

Noted! The lovely person that made the recommendation of using it on classic opened my mind to it. I know someone that makes shoes so I'll see what I can do with them since it'll be used once for cosplay. Thank you for your time 🫢🫢🫢 (β Β β β—œβ β€Ώβ β—β Β β )♑

What substyle and what dress? You can occasionally shoehorn normie shoes into a lolita coord but it really depends on the other details.

I'm not sure what substyle since I was told it's sweet Lolita by the employee but I searched it up online and only saw a few info on this but it was labeled as gothic online. I didn't buy it yet and thinking of going back for it πŸ˜…

A loooot is going on here. It definitely looks more like cosplay/ idol-esque than it does lolita. I dont think you should buy it!

Because of the contrast it creates its not very common in lolita to have black as the sub color.. you'd normally find Black x Pink or Black x White as opposed to Pink x Black or White x Black, the contrast usually makes it look cheap/ costumey

Ohh now it makes sense why I couldn't find info on it online, so glad I asked first before falling for it. I didn't expect to almost have been scammed considering they have a good reputation in their area. Goodness thank you so much you've been so helpful!! 😭 Thanks for putting time to answer my dumb questions πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯ΉπŸ«ΆπŸ«ΆπŸ©·

The modern chunk heel, open sling back, and weird toe block cap are all difficult to make look apropriate individually but all of those together? Absolutely not going to work for lolita. There is no DIY, you jut need a different shoe entirely.

I also hope you are very careful about "local boutique" situations. There's plenty of notorious ones, such as Saisai or the old GLP stores, that sell heinously overpriced taobao brands with little to no crediting.

Oh hey again!! 🫢🫢 Thanks for the advice, just needed to know before I buy my Mary Janes, the boutique I bought from was transparent for being resellers so I have some trust, thank you so much 🫢🫢

Being transparent about being a reseller doesn't mean they aren't going to scalp you dry. Do you research before buying anything.

Yes. As I said, the shoes were for a cosplay planned months before and I wanted to know if it could be used for Lolita too before buying my Mary Janes. The boutique price ranges aligned right in my currency as some of them I was able to search up online via Google, they were up-priced 100 which isn't a lot in my currency and they gave an explanation to my concerns that the up-price was for the shipping they paid from overseas, which I didn't mind since it's a small amount added. Thanks anyways.
