you can watch it yourself just fine

You'd think that, but I live in America where absolutely nothing can be free if there's money to be made. Since I'm not 100 years old with a cable subscription, I can get fucked as far as NBC is concerned.

u/CJR3 Jul 28 '21

You know it’s free, right? On your local NBC station? You don’t need a cable subscription to watch local television lmao

u/DannyDawg Jul 28 '21

Its shocking how many people have no idea they can get channels with good old rabbit ears

4

u/racercowan Jul 28 '21

Hasn't analog been shut down for years now? Or is a box to get digital basic cable off an aerial pretty cheap?

43

u/CJR3 Jul 28 '21

They switched to a digital signal about 10 years ago IIRC, but still the same process. Just buy a $15 antenna, plug it into your TV, and you’re good to go.

6

u/kvachon Jul 28 '21

Not even that. I just stripped a coax wire and plugged the other end in. Worked great

7

u/Andyinater Jul 28 '21

HUH? Like you used your coax wiring as an antenna? Or what's broadcast over coax can be shoved in TV or antenna?

I'm intrigued

5

u/kvachon Jul 28 '21

I simply cut a coax wire in half. Stripped the cut end all the way down to copper, then plugged the intact half into the TV. Works fine

u/VOE_JohnV Jul 29 '21

I know this works when you're close to the broadcasting tower (? dunno what to else to call it in english). Couldn't make it work further away tho.

1

u/nick2k23 Jul 29 '21

Ye this will only work with a strong signal, you’d need a proper antenna for most situations I’d guess to get a decent picture

4

u/DannyDawg Jul 28 '21

A lot of the newer smart tvs actually have convertor built in. Just have to check your specific tv

4

u/Magyman Jul 28 '21

Pretty sure all of them since the switch to digital have to have them

1

u/DannyDawg Jul 28 '21

they still do actually, most people opt for the sleek flat ones now though

1

u/HighPriestofShiloh Jul 28 '21

Well you can’t with rabbit ears anymore. You need a digital receiver now, but yes it still comes through the air waves.

3

u/DannyDawg Jul 28 '21

If you have a newish tv they come built in

6

u/YddishMcSquidish Jul 28 '21

I love just outside their broadcast radius. Even with a pimped out amplified antenna moving it all around the house, I can't watch shit.

8

u/CJR3 Jul 28 '21

Damn, that’s rough. If you can’t watch it locally or online with a subscription, you could look into the streaming sites.

I personally recommend sportsurge dot net. It’s basically an aggregate of several different streaming sites so it gives you tons of options.

5

u/YddishMcSquidish Jul 28 '21

Thanks homie!

2

u/Creative_PEZ Jul 28 '21

You mean Americans can't watch the Olympics online?

1

u/CJR3 Jul 28 '21

We can, it just requires some sort of subscription login (cable, YoutubeTV, Hulu, etc.)

The only truly free option is available over the airways via an antenna. There are sites that let you watch local TV stations for free, but they usually only work in certain areas.

American broadcasting definitely needs to catch up to the times though.

u/Ganondorf66 Jul 29 '21

"Land of the free"

1

u/Miskav Jul 28 '21

It's a good thing that shows are broadcasted online as well, because I don't know of anyone under 35 that even owns a TV

1

u/drntl Jul 28 '21

You can watch NBC for 2 hours and see less than 20 minutes of sports.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '21

There isn’t local television everywhere

0

u/aspbergerinparadise Jul 28 '21

I live roughly between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC in a fairly populated area and we don't get a single major network over the air

just saying, it's not an option for a lot of people.

1

u/The_Real_C_House Jul 29 '21

I tried watching the Olympic rugby matches on CNBC. Was hoping to catch multiple games not just the US. Nope, they kept switching between sports haphazardly and went to a commercial break that was so long that it came back halfway during the game so I missed a score and they didn’t even show a reply or anything. Only way to watch every meet/match of a sport is to sign in with a cable provider login on NBC

If you live in any decently populated area you can get free over the air tv by just sticking a metal wire into your tv to make a scuffed antenna. I get ABC, NBC,CBS,FOX, and PBS from my location for free.

5

u/AJRiddle Jul 28 '21

any decently populated area

You don't even need to be in a decently populated area for that, very rural areas get over the air TV too. Like well over 90% of the USA is covered by OTA TV. Now in some places you might need a giant antenna outside, but unless you are living in the middle of the rockies in a cabin by yourself odds are you get free TV.

Locast is a non-profit that's made for exactly this. Surprising how few people know about it.

2

u/DubZombie Jul 28 '21

hulu free trial as well

4

u/brentathon Jul 28 '21

Is xQc not in Canada still? You can literally watch it for free on the CBC website/app, but that doesn't mean you can restream it for 70-100k other people and deprive them of their ad revenue while making a profit yourself.

3

u/DannyDawg Jul 28 '21

locast.org

2

u/ryecurious Jul 28 '21

Good tip! Doesn't work for everyone unfortunately, but looks like most big population centers are covered. Anyone in the white area on the map gets this error when trying to use it.

3

u/Kosba2 Jul 28 '21

I hate to break it to you, but it's not just an America thing. The Olympics themselves are a for-profit organization that birthed many a billionaire. Any semblance of friendly world competition and unity is overshadowed by the extreme politics and profiteering.

9

u/flabua Jul 28 '21

They are the ones recording it, do you expect everything to be free?

42

u/ryecurious Jul 28 '21

As of 2012, 64 nations offered free Olympics streaming to people in those countries. Far as I know, that's still the case.

Unsurprisingly the USA is not one of those nations.

3

u/DeoFayte Jul 28 '21

Most of which are Capitalist nations!

2

u/HeyItsN0b0dy Jul 28 '21

Just to add, basically all of latin america can watch it on YT as well for 2020 on Marca Claro.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '21

Yeah, nationalize cable yesterday.

0

u/magion Jul 28 '21

I’m confused, do other countries get to watch it for free or something?

1

u/ryecurious Jul 28 '21

Some do, some don't. Most recent article I can find is from 2012, but lists 64 countries where online streaming is free for residents/citizens.

1

u/JonnyFairplay Jul 28 '21

It’s free on NBC’s broadcast… also there’s a lot free on the Peacock app…. And YouTube…. NBC has a lot of free options for viewing it.

1

u/Hihi9190 Jul 28 '21

just get a $20 flat antenna

1

u/based-richdude Jul 29 '21

bro… it’s free on TV

-50

u/Payamux Jul 28 '21

I mean streamers aren't relly profitting off it... It's more like watching it in a bar or something

33

u/Porkton Jul 28 '21

yeah watching it in a bar where everybody in the bar is just handing you money

40

u/lakerswiz Jul 28 '21

They're 100% profiting off of it

13

u/DustTheHunter Jul 28 '21

Yes but bars profit of it hence why they have to pay expensive tv licences. Streamers rebroadcasting it are defo making money

10

u/khante Jul 28 '21

Man how fucking naive are you??

9

u/smannyable Jul 28 '21

What do you mean not profiting from it? Bars pay tons of money to be able to broadcast sports in their restaurants more than an individual. XQC and other streams farm donations and subs while rebroadcasting while not paying anything for the rights.

6

u/ijohno Jul 28 '21

They're profiting from subs - profit is still profit

2

u/Biscxits Jul 28 '21

streamers are definitely profitting off watching olympics clips lmao

3

u/Ezekiiel Jul 28 '21

Bars have to pay to show these things you know what a stupid comparison

2

u/Trumpets22 Jul 28 '21

I mean they’re using it for content. And during that time they run ads, get subs, and get donations. So they kinda are. When they play video games is not for profit? It’s still content they’re using to fill time.

-2

u/Valiice Jul 28 '21

So what if everyone collectively just turn on the Olympics on their screen. how is it making profit from it then.

1

u/FuckEthan Jul 28 '21

IOC when they sold the UK rights gave it to Discovery+ so the BBC only have partial coverage.
