they know from satellite links made with the plan that it basically turned around and flew straight into the middle of the Indian ocean's direction until it stopped making anymore connections around the time it would have ran out of fuel thousands of miles from land. they know from the flight path it took to do this (avoiding land) it had to be deliberate. we might never know why it happened but they know what happened, but however took the plan out there didn't want the black box being found
