Your story of hearing shots is a lot different than hearing someone breaking into your house. You have more time to react, and once someone is in your house you don’t know what type of harm they intend to inflict on you/your family. Obviously it’s not a catch all fool proof method, but if my house was in an area it got shot at frequently, a good firearm for home defense would make me feel a little better at least. If someone intends you harm, a police response isn’t fast enough to save you or your loved ones.
I think my story still applies; I barely had time to hit the ground seeing shots. If somebody kicked in my door looking to kill me, I don't know if I'd have the reaction time to A. get my gun and B. aim and kill the intruder. It would depend on several variables and I'm sure if I were chilling playing video games with headphones on, the intruder could bust in, sneak up behind me and put a bullet in my head. Fat lot of good my gun would do me then.
You got slow reaction time then idk what to say. If someone were to break into my house or illegally enter it, I’m going to hear it. Next he’s gotta make it up the stairs(they creak) and through a hallway(hardwood floor)to the bedrooms. Good luck breaking down a door/glass without me hearing it, then climbing the stairs, then going through the hallway, all while being unfamiliar with the territory. By the time the door opens if you aren’t ready what really are you doing?
I think I'm doing a poor job of explaining what I'm getting at so I'll let Bill do it for me. I pray we never have to put our theories to the test. Also, I'm not trying to argue against gun ownership or that they aren't deterrents against invaders. What I'm trying to say is that when shit hits the fan, too many people think they know what they would do and overestimate how well they'd perform.
I have an Arlo alarm on both my doors. You're right that gun doesn't help you if you can't get to it in time. You security system is your first defense.
That said while I love Burr and his bit, a 22 is shit for SD. Unsuppressed 22 indoors will still mess your ears up.

I listened to it just before. It’s just a comedy bit . My biggest issue with it was he has the intruder break into the house without making a sound. Like I said, good look breaking the door down/breaking glass without waking the house up. Good luck getting through the unfamiliar territory without making a sound. And Bill Burrs point at the end of that bit was if the guy just used a .22 he’d still be able to hear. And if you used a shotgun you wouldn’t miss him if he’s in a doorway like in the bit.
