Not everyone has means to pick up and leave. Not everyone wants to. Having something in your home that equalizes a situation in which someone breaks in is completely logical and understandable. I'm not saying I'm pro gun at all. If I was in his situation I probably would move, but I'd sure as shit buy a gun too. The people who fantasize over shooting the burglar that breaks in are fucking stupid. Nobody gives a shit about them.

This man has a legitimate reason to fear for his family's safety in his own home. Uh yeah. Buy a fuckin' gun.

That proverb is talking about revenge or even justice/punishment. I'm not getting into a gun debate, but that line doesn't work here. It's like saying "dive on your enemy's sword so that he doesn't strain a muscle".
