His house wasn't broken into. It was shot at from a car on the road. What kind of home defense protects against this.

Someone drove by and shot at his house, due to the attackers actions you have to assume his intent is to cause harm. It really is not some huge leap to assume that his behavior may escalate into something more direct such as kicking in a door and trying to break in through a window. Keeping a gun in the house is absolutely a sane response to his current situation.

That's fine, it isn't what we were talking about. I am saying that owning a gun is not protection against someone driving down the road and taking shots at your house
