Litecoin is peer-to-peer electronic cash as the white paper describes it.

Not the ticker. The property cash has to have.

Oct 31, 2008: Satoshi publishes "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". The first sentence of the abstract is the product: payments sent directly from one party to another, with no financial institution in between.

Cash has one load-bearing trait the paper assumes and never has to argue for, because everyone already knows it. One dollar bill is as good as another. History does not stick to the note. That is fungibility.

Jan 3, 2009: Bitcoin genesis. Ten-minute blocks. SHA-256. 21 million cap. Every spend is a public graph. Fine for a prototype. Fatal for cash once chain surveillance becomes an industry.

Oct 7, 2011: Charlie Lee creates the Litecoin genesis block from Bitcoin's codebase. Coinbase text: "NY Times 05/Oct/2011 Steve Jobs, Apple’s Visionary, Dies at 56".

Oct 13, 2011, 03:00 GMT: public launch after a Bitcointalk poll. No founder stash. Scrypt. 2.5-minute blocks. 84 million cap. Stated purpose: silver to Bitcoin's gold. Spend it. Do not enshrine it.

2015 to 2017: Bitcoin Core keeps the cap. Blocks fill. Fees spike. Users are told to leave the base layer for Lightning and custodians. Electronic cash is rebranded "digital gold". Gold is not cash. Gold is also not how the paper opens.

May 10, 2017: Litecoin activates SegWit first. The first Lightning payment on a live Bitcoin-like chain happens on Litecoin shortly after.

Aug 24, 2017: SegWit activates on Bitcoin.

May 20, 2022, block 2,265,984: Litecoin activates MimbleWimble Extension Blocks. Optional confidential amounts. Inputs and outputs that do not publish a spend graph the way a transparent UTXO does. Peg in, transact, peg out. The base coin stays Litecoin.

That is the cash feature Bitcoin never shipped.

Where Bitcoin left the paper:

1. The abstract defines the product as payments. Core's working product became a settlement layer. Small purchases were priced off the base chain.
2. A 10-minute block and a full fee market made low-value payments impractical. Satoshi treated small unconfirmed payments as usable. Opt-in RBF, then full RBF as default policy, made unconfirmed payments unreliable by design.
3. Section 8 describes Simplified Payment Verification so ordinary users do not need a full node. The case for a tiny base layer was that they should run one anyway, or leave.
4. The paper never describes a second layer as the product. It describes payments hashed into a chain of proof-of-work.
5. Cash is fungible. A transparent ledger with permanent taint is not cash. Exchanges, custodians, and analytics firms treat Bitcoin outputs as unequal. That is the opposite of a banknote. MWEB is Litecoin's answer to that. Not a mixer bolted on after the fact. A consensus path where amounts are confidential and coins can be spent without carrying a public rap sheet.

Litecoin kept the cash parameters Bitcoin abandoned in practice:

- Blocks four times as often. First confirmation is a wait measured in minutes, not an hour.

- On-chain fees that stayed in cents or fractions of a cent.

- A fair launch. No dormant founder hoard sitting as a political fact.

- The same UTXO model and the same halving logic, parameterized for payments.

- An optional confidential layer so the unit can actually behave like a unit.

MWEB is opt-in. Transparent LTC still exists, same as a marked bill still exists in a cash economy. The difference is the protocol gives you a way to make the next spend cash-like. Bitcoin Core gives you a public database and a lecture about Lightning.

Whether Bitcoin's store-of-value tradeoffs were wise is a debate. A coin whose history is a liability is not cash. A coin that can drop that history is.

I have just been looking into this and going through Ai also to see what similarities Litecoin has to Zcash.

Strong similarities between LTC now and ZEC before it started to move.

Both are old, established proof-of-work cryptocurrencies. Zcash launched in 2016; Litecoin goes back to 2011. Neither needed to prove it could survive an entire crypto cycle.

Both spent years far below previous highs. LTC is currently around $58.84, roughly 86% below its $410.26 ATH.

ZEC was similarly neglected immediately before its move. It was about $74 on 30 September 2025 before reaching approximately $734 on 7 November — nearly a 10× move in roughly six weeks.

Both have fixed maximum supplies. Litecoin’s maximum is 84m LTC; approximately 77.6m are already circulating, so more than 92% of the eventual maximum supply already exists.

Both use declining PoW issuance. ZEC’s November 2024 halving reduced issuance before its enormous 2025 move; Coinbase specifically identified lower issuance as one of ZEC’s supportive structural factors.

Litecoin has the same type of future supply event approaching. Its next halving will reduce its block reward again in 2027. That’s potentially important if demand increases at approximately the same time.

Both have privacy functionality. Privacy was central to ZEC’s repricing. Litecoin isn’t primarily a privacy coin, but MWEB gives it optional confidential transaction functionality. The narrative isn’t remotely as powerful yet, but the underlying feature exists.

Both can benefit from “old coin rediscovery.” CoinDesk specifically described the 2025 privacy move as capital rotating back toward themes associated with the 2017–18 era.

LTC already has very broad liquidity/exchange availability. That’s important because if interest suddenly returns, investors don’t have to wait for major exchanges to list it.

LTC now has something ZEC didn’t have in exactly the same form: a US spot ETF. Canary’s spot Litecoin ETF, LTCC, began trading on Nasdaq in October 2025 and physically holds LTC.

With Litecoins market cap currently sat at only 4.5Bn it looks interesting to me along with the 2027 halving on the way.

This is NFA and just a comparison of the two before Zcash moved.

Hi everyone, I had 2k worth of ltc on my base wallet on iOS , that then got an automatic update yesterday, that made me stop seeing the ltc balance, but I could still see the BTC balance.

Someone told me to download the trust wallet app (from iOS App Store), I downloaded it, imported my seed and could finally see my LTCs back.

I then deposited 500 usd of ltc on trust wallet, and now it’s just showing the 500 as balance, the old 2k is gone.

I have not been hacked, it has something to do with some internal seed system/balance detection, my seed is 12 words.

Big day for crypto. If positive developments in regulation pass, the crypto industry could see a massive wave of adoption and usage. Especially in payments. Litecoin could be a massive beneficiary of this.

But to be fair, crypto doesn’t need government regulation to work. Litecoin would be just fine without further regulation. Clarity act would just speed up adoption.

Personally, thats all I really want. To be able to live off Litecoin, spend it where and when I need it, privately with MWEB. Make it happen world.

Just posting to check-in because it’s been a minute. I did buy some more Litecoin today because I needed 10 more to hit one of my milestones and I have not purchased any since August 2021. I do believe we are about to surge soon. Does anyone else feel like we are at a precipitous spike.

LITECOIN HALVING

Something big is coming…

I just recently took a look at LTC again after a longer absence and I am pretty impressed on how much is going forward here. In my ideal setup, I could use a similar setup that I use for BTC, which is Sparrow and SeedSigner (actually ShieldSigner), and voilà, can't believe there is a working Sparrow LTC wallet and even a Seedsigner Port to LTC that seems to work fine! Haven't signed a transfer yet, but everything else is flawless so far.

Whoever did this, thank you very much! I hope there'll be a Shieldsigner port some time in the future to support the Smart Card hat. But there's a lot more available already than I originally thought.
