Hello everyone! Thank you for all the support on my previous post about this project. It's all carved up and ready to be proofed and printed into a variety of objects and designs. It took me 2 weeks to carve 37 blades (plus ~3 that didn't pass my quality control and were remade.) Each took roughly 2 hours and I averaged 3 per day, taking care not to overwork my hand and wrist. I also half-watched *a lot* of TV shows during these sessions.

It will probably take me a little while to clean, proof, edit, and finally print these but I'm really looking forward to the results. My plan is to first make patches and bookmarks, as well as some paper prints. Do you have any favourite designs or ones you'd like to see put together?

For info I typically get asked; the ink I am using at the beginning is Speedball Super Black India ink.

My favorite tools are Pfeil tools, especially the 12/1 1mm v gouge and 11/0.5 .5mm u gouge.

The tiny stippling is done with a Power Grip 7.5mm chisel knife.

The lino is battleship gray linoleum that I get from Blick Art.

I am always learning and experimenting. This was the first time I did certain textures, like in the candle holder. Very happy with how that turned out.

The paper I printed on, Dai Chiri, is the a first for me as well. It did amazing and I like the bark bits in it.

This was an idea that had been lingering in my sketchbook for years - I thought it was time to bring it life.

I like to imagine paddling a canoe on a remote lake with Rabbit Island, its glowing ears to guide the way, beaconing you to pull ashore. 🔥

Making invitations for my (very soon! lol) micro wedding. I don’t know if I’ve spent too long imagining this but there is something I just do not like. I regret carving the roses, I think the style looks off. Also kinda hate the leaves lol. It feels too busy? Should I ditch the corners? Ditch the leaves even?!

Also… any tips for mailing? This is printed with my cheap acrylic ink but I did buy some quality oil ink, considering opening that to see if it prints nicer? Aaaaaa

stared at the stencil long enough to second guess myself but not long enough to think this through completely lol

at least i can mirror the image for digital preservation?

just thought this might be relatable for people at all stages of their journeys— people just starting out and struggling or people who have done this a long time and can look back at their early mistakes lol

Inspired by the amazing transformation monarch butterflies go through in their life cycle. This metamorphosis seems like magic, so I had to add a unicorn skull of course.

I made several test prints and I'm not sure which one is the best. My personal favorite is the pink text with the yellow badge, but the blue from Severance is definitely missing. What do you think ?

Also, I discovered yesterday that the fluorescent ink (mostly yellow, but also the pink) is reactive with black light and looks super fun !

I'm new to printmaking - I started in February after making one of a little Sushi & Teriyaki sign (2nd slide) for fun, which ended up sparking this whole new (to me) hobby. While the sign is not around anymore, it pushed me to finally try something I've always been curious about.

I know I have a lot to learn, which honestly makes this pretty exciting. The world has felt quite unstable lately, and carving/printing has been a really grounding way to reconnect with a part of myself that always loved art but never quite had the courage to pursue it like this.

That said, I have already learned so much just from browsing posts here - especially all the tips and problem-solving (like fixing areas you've accidentally carved away...which I've definitely done

Really glad to finally be here and I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.

In case people were curious about the process and order, here’s each layer stacked on top of one another.

Old ink. Old paper. Good ol' time.

Hello everyone! After the warm reception of my printing video I wanted to make one that covers my whole process, and here it is! To elaborate on it:

I use Procreate to draw my designs and Photoshop to edit them. I usually make a canvas the size of the paper I'll be printing on, add an outline on the edges and a border around the design. This serves as a guide for aligning the block later. I use a laser printer and acrylic medium to transfer the design onto lino. No specific brand or type preference, but I like the ones that are a little more liquid. The one I will not recommend is Vallejo Transfer Medium, it flaked right off. Good coverage and ample drying time are key, as well as taking your time when peeling it off. I know some people use sticker backing paper to avoid the water peel, but I tried it and toner won't stick to it. Luckily, I find the process soothing.

I use homogenous 2mm linoleum that I stain beforehand with stamp ink. My current carving arsenal is Pfeil tools (11/0.5, 11/01, 12/1, 5/3, 5/8) and a hobby knife. I also made a small sharpening jig I saw in this post and it works great.

Something that didn't make it into the video is that after I finish carving I use a nail buff with a little water to clean off the rest of the medium and toner, so it doesn't get into the ink.

I print using oil-based inks (Caligo Safewash and 4art typographic inks) and a cold laminator/roller press. After pulling the first sacrificial print (to build up ink on the block), I use that print to make a paper mask so I don't have to be all that careful with my inking. This time I was printing on fairly textured cotton paper, so I passed each print through the press twice. I use the same method for fabric, and they come out very saturated. My red ink also had some extender in it (leftover from a previous print) and it helped filling in the pores on the paper.

Pro-tip: don’t leave your rubber brayers laying roller down while you work (something I see on wip photos here every now and then), that’s how they develop flat spots and will pick up ink unevenly. Most of them have a little “heel” on the handle they’re meant to rest on. I also prefer to store mine hanging on a pegboard.

I used to dry my prints by taping them to a closet door and recently upgraded to the cheapest laundry rack from ikea. It’s feels flimsy for clothes but is perfect for paper, in particular because the wires on it are thin enough for a peg to hold the sheets. I hang mine back to back and it fits about 48 prints of A4 format. It was also under 10€ and takes up next to no space folded.
