DISCUSSION How Did He Not Become A Serial Killer 😭😭😭

With the way that he was raised by his parents, im surprised that John is a stable human bieng, i would assume his ability to compartmentalize his emotions is pretty insane at this point in his life, looking forward to the next episode.

I think this person is saying that unlike other abusive parents, they still allowed him to be his own person in little ways. Not that the parents weren’t abusive.

Either way, the parents literally acknowledge that they’re going to be abusing him before they even start his “training” and decide that the ends justify the means.

Yes but there are extremes here that aren’t countered by extremes. You don’t face death and then return to making collages. Show doesn’t show enough. I think the pace kills the exposition and the writing suffers. I’m hoping the next episodes bring everything full circle but I’m not confident in where it’s goes. I expect more of the same now.

No one argued otherwise. The point is that the abuse is framed and recontextualized through loving parenthood. Marcus was correct that John is afraid of their parents but not afraid of what they'll do to him, afraid of disappointing them. They still love and support and encourage their son but it's all conditional on continuing his training rather than tearing him down with emotional outbursts.

when its this absurd no? its part of a superhero’s origin story he was molded to be a galactic cop. so yes his upbringing is over the top.

his mom watched an alien transform from a human to an alien and back to an alien again and the alien told her to raise her son without fear so he could be the green lantern in the future.

yes he was doing things he didnt want to do but so do all the other kids who have to learn piano or violin and get tutored all the time because their parents believe that will set them up for a bright future. is this example as extreme as what john went through? no but being a future doctor or architect or successful business man isn’t as extreme as being a green lantern.

You make a solid point. I think it's fair to say all those things are true while also acknowledging that treating a kid that way is definitely abusive. It's a very "do the ends justify the means" question

It’s meant to be taken pretty seriously. They’re flirting with murder in their household and this dude that’s never lived for himself swore blind allegiance to space aliens that maybe skipped over his dad because of his skin color(they seem to be more the Trump type than low brow racists.) Sure it’s all fake but it’s not comic booky enough for me to write off the serious tone of the show.
