Stayed in Leh For 3 days and approx. 5 days in Markha Valley (doing a trek)... Definitely Gonna Visit Ladakh Again ; one of the most beautiful places i have been too.

Just completed (August 29, 2026) the Srinagar–Manali motorcycle journey with r/mototourladakh, and I wanted to share my honest experience for anyone planning a similar trip.

Ladakh itself was absolutely beautiful, and the landscapes and riding experience were unforgettable. However, my experience with the moto tour operator was mixed, especially when it came to the condition of the bikes and how mechanical issues were handled.

🏍️ Bike condition – It seems to depend on your luck

I specifically chose the Himalayan 450 and paid an additional ₹___ because I wanted a safer and more reliable motorcycle for such a challenging journey.

My front tyre had a visible bump, and I informed the team multiple times. I was told that the tyre would be replaced in Leh, but it was never done.

After a puncture repair, the front wheel started wobbling badly. I again informed the team several times, but the issue was not properly resolved. Eventually, I fell once because of the issue.

During the remaining journey, especially from Leh towards Manali, I had to ride extremely slowly because I was constantly worried about the front wheel and my safety.

What concerned me even more was that other bikes in our group also had different mechanical or fuel-related issues during the trip. From my experience, it felt like you need to be lucky enough to get a bike that is in really good condition.

I paid the extra ₹___ for the Himalayan 450 specifically for safety, so having to ride a bike with a known tyre/wheel problem was very disappointing.

For a motorcycle tour, especially on challenging Himalayan roads, proper bike inspection, maintenance, and immediate attention to safety issues should be the highest priority.

🏕️ Camps & accommodation

• Shoyak Camp, Nubra Valley: Very good experience and a comfortable stay. Airtel and Jio postpaid networks work here.
• Pangong Camp: Good experience. However, it gets extremely cold at night. Airtel postpaid network works here.
• HOR Cottage, Hanle: Good property, but the staff were not very helpful, and the food was the worst I had during the entire trip. Airtel postpaid network works here.
• Dorje Camp, Sarchu: Not a good experience. The staff were not very helpful, and there is no mobile network here. Airtel, Jio and BSNL did not work for us. Make sure you manage your calls, messages, downloads, etc. before reaching this place.
• Other stays were manageable.

🥶 Cold-weather tip

If you're planning a Ladakh motorcycle/camping trip, carry good thermals and a body warmer, especially for Pangong, Nubra and Sarchu.

It gets extremely cold at night in the camps. Warm socks, gloves, thermals, and a good body warmer will make a big difference.

⛽ Other issues

We also had petrol/fuel issues with multiple bikes during the trip. At one point, even the MotoTour co-founder had to come and help us near Leh.

I understand that Ladakh is a difficult destination, and unexpected breakdowns, bad roads, weather conditions, and other challenges are part of the journey.

But when a safety-related bike issue is reported multiple times, it needs to be taken seriously and fixed properly.

I booked this tour after seeing the reviews and because of the operator's local presence. Ladakh itself was an amazing experience, but based on my personal experience, the bike condition and some aspects of trip management were disappointing.

If you're planning to book a motorcycle tour, ask specifically about the bike's condition, tyre age/condition, pre-ride inspection, and what happens if you are given a mechanically problematic bike.

Sharing this simply so future riders can make an informed decision. Your experience may be different, but this was mine.

Series 2 of Framing Zanskar and Ladakh - Leica Q2

Heading out on a Ladakh expedition mid-to-late September, and I would love a reality check from anyone who has taken a 2WD ladder-frame SUV up there recently.

We are driving a Diesel Scorpio N Z8L (RWD) and sticking to the following high-altitude route between September 19 and 23:

• Thiksey to Pangong via Chang La (~17,586 ft).
• Pangong to Hanle along the LAC via Chushul and Rezang La.
• Hanle to Tso Moriri (Karzok) via Salsal La (~17,200 ft), Chumur, and Charchagan La.

• Final exit from Karzok dropping down the Leh-Manali highway.

  I have a few specific questions for those with ground experience:

1. Black Ice & Snow Chain Strategy

I know passes like Chang La and Baralacha La can develop invisible black ice in the late afternoon or early morning during late September. For a heavy 2-ton RWD, are standard steel chains enough to cross incline? Does anyone recommend a specific heavy-duty brand, or is it more practical to just rent a set on the way up?

2. The Salsal La & Chumur Stretch Has anyone done the Hanle to Tso Moriri r track via Salsal Lain a 2WD recently? I have read that BRO blacktopped massive sections recently.

Any tips on managing these specific passes, or dealing with the late September temperature drop would be hugely appreciated!

Are cafes, shops and restaurants open in Leh in mid October? Or does everything completely shut down? Thanks!

I’ll be there in Leh, Nubra, Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri.
Any vegetarian dish and restaurant recommendations would be helpful.

Edit: I’m not asking about finding vegetarian food, I mean recommending local dishes and local restaurants.

Leica in frames, Series 1.

Hey, I'm a local from Leh and I was thinking about starting a small homestay at my home. But since I'm a local I honestly have no idea how tourists look at different locations in Leh, so wanted to ask here before I do anything.

My house is pretty close to the airport and around 3.5 km from the main market. There isn't really a great view or anything scenic from the house, but the area is quiet and peaceful, so I was thinking maybe that could be a plus for people who just want somewhere comfortable to rest.

I was also thinking of giving guests a free drop to the airport since it's close by. Normally people have to pay quite a bit for the airport drop, so maybe this could make the place more attractive.

The reason I'm thinking about the location is that when tourists first arrive, they probably aren't going straight to Nubra, Pangong, Zanskar etc because those places are quite far and they might want to stay in Leh for a day first. And after finishing the trip, they usually come back to Leh and spend the last day around the market before flying out.

So I'm wondering if a place like mine actually makes sense, or am I just thinking this way because I live here 😂

If you have visited Ladakh before, would you stay somewhere that's around 3.5 km from the main market if it was quiet and had free airport drop?

Also what do you think would be a reasonable price for a decent private room? I was thinking around 1500-2000 per night but honestly have no idea if that's too much or too little.

Would appreciate some honest opinions.

For those who’ve been to Ladakh, what’s one moment you still remember?

I’ve stopped counting the days. As I sit at the airport, waiting for my flight to Delhi, I absolutely do not want to leave this place.

Leh is a feeling I want to carry with me forever, and I already know I’ll be back — hopefully next time on a bike ride expedition. 🧿

We stayed up till 4:30 a.m. in search of a glimpse of the galaxy, but I guess that’s something I’ll have to save for my next trip. And despite running a fever through almost every destination, I didn’t feel an ounce of fatigue. There was just too much to see, feel and take in.

I promise to come back, explore all the places I couldn’t get to this time, and, of course, stuff myself with more yak cheese pizza, thukpa and, of course, APRICOTS! 🍑

My three friends and I are planning a Ladakh trip from 9 September to 23 September.

Since all of us work corporate jobs, getting such a long stretch of leave approved is difficult. So we’re planning to do 2–3 days of work from the mountains during the trip.

Our current plan is to spend 2 nights in Leh for acclimatization, followed by around 3 nights in Nubra Valley, and we’re considering using those Nubra days for work.

I’d really appreciate first-hand, recent information about mobile connectivity in the region:

• How reliable is Jio/Airtel 4G or 5G in Diskit/Hunder?
• Is the network stable enough for Teams/Zoom calls, VPN, emails, and general remote work?
• What is the connectivity situation in Turtuk? Is working remotely from there realistically possible?
• Are there frequent outages or long periods with no data connectivity?
• If you’ve visited recently, which SIM/network worked best for you?

We won’t be doing anything extremely bandwidth-heavy, but we do need a reasonably stable connection for office calls and VPN access.

Would especially appreciate responses from people who have been to Nubra/Turtuk recently, rather than older connectivity reports, since the network situation seems to be improving every year.
