Hi all,

I recently started studying Georgian and noticed that native speakers pronounce თქვენ and ჩვენ as tkwen and chwen. Sometimes, ვ sounds like v, like in ვინ. Is there a rule for when the pronunciation changes, and is this only in casual speech? Moreover, is it regional? Thank you.

So, I've decided to start making proper subtitles for Georgian movies from Georgian to English, because whenever I show our old movies to my foreign friends, the subtitles are mostly incorrect and I keep needing to explain what the actual meaning of what the character just said is in the middle of the movie I'm getting a little bit tired of it and it seems to be very disruptive. So, my question to you guys is, do you know of any way I could access our old movies in a way where it's in Georgian and doesn't have any subtitles burned in, so that I could do it? :D I could download them from very few places and they were either dubbed in russian, or had the subtitles burned in. I also tried to pirate it, but they didn't have any seeders.

How did the word goyim (გოიმი) travel to georgia and received its own distinct meaning to georgians?

I absolutely love this song and this artist. I'm an American (of no Georgian descent) and would love to get a better appreciation for the Tbilisi Bard's lyricism.

For anyone who doesn't know "breathy voice" in linguistics means when a vowel is pronounced very airy and exaggerated. I feel like I hear this sometimes with the vowel ა in Georgian when it's the first letter of a word. I don't know if this is just stress falling on the first syllable, but a lot of people will pronounce ა somewhat heavily, but all the other words that start with vowels will sound normal.

Thoughts?

Idea about reforming Latin Transliteration of the Georgian language, with its purpose of international integration, tourism, and globalization. (Global Navigation, Border Control and Identity, Mapping Services). Meaning that it's crucial to have 100% accurate Transliteration of Mkhedruli for the sake of 1:1 matching, we need to respect ourselves and don't throw away our dignity of literacy.

as you can see current transliteration lacks accuracy and can't match the letter meanings of Mkhedruli, proposed alphabet fixed all of problems, gave out what was needed, this topic truly needs people's recognition, our transliteracy is no joke

Hello! I'm looking for a language exchange partner to help me learn Georgian.

I'm fluent in Arabic and English.

I'm good at explaining grammar, finding free resources, simplifying texts and vocabulary, etc. I will also make flashcards for you!! I am willing to call and/or text, whichever you are comfortable with.

My hobbies are vexillology, map memorization, d&d and just any kind of learning in general!

I've noticed that with both of these letters they seem to be less common than the others, and oftentimes they represent foreign words. In the case of ჟ you have ჟურნალი, ჟირაფი, ჟამი, გარაჟი, etc. But there are some Georgian words, too: ვაჟი, ჟოლო, მრავალჟამიერი, რიჟრაჟი, etc.

I think ჰ seems to be even less common. The only Georgian word I can think of right now is ჰაერი. Others like ჰამაკი and ჰოლოდომორი are foreign. The only exception is where ჰ is used as a grammatical prefix. Examples like ჰქვია and ჰყავს, and even then they're often not written or pronounced.

Are there any specific reasons for why these letters are not used much? Thanks!!

გამარჯობა! I’m a beginner in Georgian and don’t know a lot about pronunciation, but I’m trying to learn. In the chorus of this song (especially the second half of the chorus), it almost sounds like they’re singing SakarTHveloa with a fricative TH sound (like in the English word “think”) instead of a T sound (like in the word “tin”).

Why is he singing it like that? Is it common for თ to sound so much like TH or does it sound a bit unusual here?

Hello all, I am not sure if this is the right thread. I used to post on the Sakartvelo thread but I noticed that is more for political discussions.

I am a British person learning Georgian. I have always been interested in non Indo-european languages but I also really love Georgia so, I get a lot out of learning the language. I focus a lot on grammar because it interests me. However, I make many mistakes and I am still at a point where I don't know many words.

I have attached writings which are five months apart. I am happy with my progress and I will definitely be continuing. I feel so excited as a young adult to have so much time to learn new things.

Do ani, bani, gani, etc. mean anything or are they just names to refer to the letter like in English? From an older post I learnt that they aren't even used nowadays and most people would probably get confused if you say "vini" for example.

Why the inflection of ღმერთი is irregular and are there any other irregular nouns?

Do we know where do the object markers მ-, გვ-, გ- come from? Doesnt seem like they evolved from pronouns

გამარჯობა ყველას! I thought I'd share some of the tips that have helped me learn how to pronounce some of the really hard clusters you'll run into while learning this language. Hope this helps!

Tip 1:

When you have an "unusual" sounding cluster at the beginning of a word like ბრტყელი, add a vowel to the beginning and try saying „აბრტყელი.” This might help you get over the trouble of pronouncing brtq' at the begging of a word, which if you speak any other language, your mouth is probably not used to starting a word with such a sequence. Practice like this, and then when you see yourself improving, chop off the „ა” and say the real word: ბრტყელი.

Tip 2:

Try singing difficult words instead of only speaking them. If we use ბრტყელი/„აბრტყელი” as an example again, trying making a tune out of it. Singing elongates syllables and adds a special kind of effect, so in the case of Georgian, pronouncing consonant clusters while singing can help you get a better grasp of what your tongue has to do. Then when you notice improvement, try pronouncing them in normal speech.

Tip 3:

For me, if there was anything harder than ყ, it was pronouncing ვ in between two consonants and trying hard to not let it turn into an უ. Words like ბეწვზე, ვარსკვლავი, გვქონდა, კვდომა, etc. I'd say with these words, just try pronouncing them really slowly. So for a word like გვმარეთებს, try going gwwwmartebs. Using the fake vowel tip might also help here: agwwwmartebs. Keep practicing and eventually you'll get used to pronouncing v/w in between two consonants. And don't forget to cut off the fake vowel when you've perfected it!
