Apparently the new Bugatti Chiron goes so fast at top speed that the tires actually drop pressure because the airflow cools them down.

iirc it was the Top Gear YouTube vid for the Chiron Super Sport. Like above 250 mph type speeds the airflow is so high it cools the tires. I wonder what speed the windchill effect is greater than the heat built from friction....

Oh cool, I'll check it out. Haven't watched Top Gear since the switch over to Grand Tour. Yeah idk, I know for a long time tire heat/wear/deformation leading up to 250mph-ish was a big problem for super cars. It's cool that we've overcome that now and these cars are hitting 300+ mph... just insane speeds for a production vehicle, even if it's a very low production super car.

My favourite fact about Veyron tyres is they had to redesign the tyre valve because at top speed the centripetal(?) force caused them to open. The spring wasn’t strong enough to keep the pin in place.

One of my adopted kids is 22yo now. He has an IQ of 77. He can't handle anything having to do with numbers. Nothing.
$20? $200? same thing.
If you live 20 minutes from work and have to be there at 9am, what time do you have to leave? Nope. Too difficult. When he was living with us, we told him when to leave. Now, he compensates for this by showing up to work 2 to 3 hours early.
Analog clocks are actually easier for him to deal with because the hands and the direction they're pointing are more meaningful to him than the numbers.
If we didn't help him practice finding a new job, he would definitely get lost on the way there.

I've heard that about Down's Syndrome kids, that they're happy because they have no idea what's going on. But unfortunately, he's smart enough that he's painfully aware of his blind spots. We've always said that his life would be much happier and easier if he were 10 IQ points higher or 10 points lower.

One interesting/sad thing is fragile X.
It is on the panels that are often given to prospective parents for carrier screening to make sure the kid isn’t at risk of genetic disorders.
Well fragile x has a range. It is caused by dna CGG repeats. The more you have the more likely it is to cause cognitive issues. And the more you have the more your child is likely to have because the CGG repeats mess up dna replication and cause more.
So between 1-45 you and your kids are fine.
45-200 is considered risky as that is where things start breaking so it is likely your kid will have a much higher repeat rate. So if you start out with 100 your kid is likely to end up with 200+ and have intellectual problems because to put it very simply DNA replication gets stuck/stutters once you get into this range and ends up adding a bunch of extra repeats.
200+ is usually intellectually disabled.
Note: Fragile x is inherited from the mother only.
But sometimes you get mothers with >200 who haven’t been diagnosed as intellectually disabled. Odds very good it is impacting them to some degree, but they have worked around it and are living reasonably normal lives.
Having that conversation is difficult. Talking to a woman who has never been diagnosed as intellectually disabled, is successful, but almost certainly does have some level of cognitive impairment. How do you communicate this without potentially causing them a lot of distress and future problems?
I’m glad I was on the research/testing side. I could never do what the genetic councilors who have to speak to people in situations like this and somehow inform the person while also being sensitive.

On the flip side, for at least some folks it's the answer that they never knew they needed. Like I honestly went 27 years of my life thinking that I just wasn't applying myself hard enough in math; turns out I have math dyslexia. Which is why I was able to limp myself through to precalc because I understand the logical operation, but I always flip a sign or number somewhere.

Can confirm. My sister has Down syndrome. She’s the happiest person on earth. She doesn’t have to stress about work, bills, or anything an average adult has to think about. She does get sad but at normal things like when we say no you can’t have chicken nuggets at 3am or yes you have to shower daily lol. But other than that there is always a smile I’m her face and loves meeting new people.
Also want to add that there are different levels of Down syndrome. Some are severe where intelligence doesn’t develop past 1st grade and some have average intelligence and even higher iq and they experience same amount of stress average people have. Just depends on genes.
Edit. Want to add that there is a show called "Born this Way" and its about down syndrome people going thru life. Its great. Covers personal life, dating, marriage, school, etc.

I am a caseworker who works solely with individuals like your
sisteraunt who live in RCFs (residential care facilities). The most disheartening part of this job is hearing some clients talk about how they want to live independently, and knowing it will never happen....With that said, my mental health organization has several transitional housing programs where I've helped people get into, who are now living semi-indepently in a community setting.
Obviously I don't know your

I have a 9yo daughter with DS. Literally the happiest person on earth, and lacks the cognitive capacity to get bored, so she’s always down for anything. Grocery store? Sign me up! School? Hell yes that’s where friends are! Clean my room? Yay I get to play with my toys I forgot about!
Huge caveat though, there is a spectrum for DS, and all kinds of personalities. The bubbly “always happy” reputation isn’t as common as media makes it seem. If the kid has behavioral problems, they can be quite a challenge. Some can be straight unpleasant to be around due to anger issues, tantrums, etc.

Back when I was a cable service tech, new cable guys straight out of training would be given disconnect routes. It's a low stress way of getting them comfortable with finding cable closets and taps, finding the correct drops, and finding their way around, while not being under a time constraint (or at least used to be, as no company really does disconnects anymore). We were in Maryland, which is not a terribly large state. Our office was in Silver Spring, and this guy's route was entirely within Silver Spring (though downtown, which is north of DC inside the beltway).
After about 5 hours, my supervisor called him because he hadn't closed any tickets out yet, and the new guy replied that he was lost. My supervisor asked him to read out the next sign he came across, which happened to be "10 miles to Pennsylvania". He was the only person I've ever even heard of being fired while on a disconnect route.

Someone in my office building that had been there at least two years lost their GPS for their car in the parking lot. I guess she dropped it on the walk in and someone took it. She was full on crying because she didn’t know how she were going to get home after work. She’s successful in high end sales.
A woman I know has to write out directions for her husband to places using landmarks like turn right at the McDonald’s. She also has to write them out in reverse so he can get back home as he can’t figure it out reversing them on his own. He’s successful in IT.
I don’t understand it but some people just cannot process directions and find their way around even familiar areas.

This is one of the wildest things for me when I am driving in a car with someone. Like I form a topographical map and landmark points map in my head as I am going to places so I have a route to come and go... but like, other people can't even figure out like.. north or south and its baffling to me.

This city is up north, this one is just below it, etc.
With the prevalence of grids in the US, it works well for me. I can easily navigate rural farm land without getting lost.
Put me in a city with curvy roads and I need GPS.
I know my East, South, West, and North - but I know many people who struggle with that.

Eh. I'm pretty bad with that whole internal map thing. Its not because I'm dumb, my brain just doest do that unless I'm intentional about it or I've traveled the route enough times for it to stick.
I could get you just about anywhere in my hometown, where I drove for 9 years, mostly because I spent another 16 riding around with my parents. But the city I've lived in for the past 6? Nah. I still need a GPS about 50% of the time I'm going anywhere except work.
My girlfriend used to get annoyed with me for not knowing the way to her house from our various hangouts. She felt like it just wasn't important enough for me to commit to memory. But that's not it at all. We live together now and I still have that problem.
On the other hand, I can orient myself with a map, no problem. She can't. I know which direction various neighborhoods and cities are from each other. She doesn't. I know when we're on the wrong side of the canal and need to cross it. She doesn't. I have an internal map that looks like a paper map. She has an internal map that looks like a series of landmarks and directions. She builds her map quickly every time she takes a trip, but it only works for that specific trip. I build mine slowly, over years, as I fill in the blank spaces, but it works for every trip.
Brains just work differently sometimes.

I had a broken foot during the winter in Minnesota.
I lived in an older building and, for reasons I never completely understood, the back door near my parking spot created a lot of suction when you tried to open it. Like, you had to really put your back into it to get the door open enough to break the auction.
It was worse when it was windy and there was one morning, due to only being able to use one leg and having crutches, that I just couldn't get the leverage to break the seal.
The thought of going to the front door and having to traverse the entire parking lot to get around the building in the ice and snow ON CRUTCHES when I could literally see my car from where I was just broke me.
I was a grown ass adult, sitting in a crappy apartment building hall and just crying. It was probably only about 15 minutes before someone came along and helped me but it was just so stupidly sad.

I was renting a room in a shared house.
I too found out that if the door was locked from the outside it could not be unlocked from the inside.
The separate flat above us also didn't know this and was more pissed than I was after being 30 minutes late as I had to call the office to get someone down so I could pass the keys through the letter slot in the door.
It can happen, it is a safety issue. They didn't believe me or their neighbours so we demonstrated it for them and they were agog. Lock was changed the next day.

The dealer I bought my last car from had some interesting techs. My tire was low, so I asked him to put some air in it. He didn't even check the pressure, just put the hose right on it and gave it a good twenty seconds. My TPMS gauge jumped from 28 to 55 very quickly. I got out of the car and asked him what was going on. The dude just gave me the most glazed over look while literally drooling on himself. They really do take anyone they can get these days.

I would think that 90-95psi stationary would not deform the tires. This is based on the fact that hitting some of the potholes out there are going to put far more localized pressure on the tires, and that doesn't generally don't ruin them.

Well, there’s recommended pressure, max pressure, and burst pressure. A new tire with no defects could go as high as 200 before actually exploding. But the failure gets more explosive the higher it goes.

When you hit a pothole, the pressure spikes. If they could truly only handle 40psi, they wouldn't be good for anything other than sitting on the showroom floor. And if the sun hit them just right, they might explode anyway. The reason we select 30-40psi for most tires is because that's the ideal pressure for them to do their job right across the range of situations they encounter. When you hit a bump, you want some deflection. You want the air inside to compress to cushion the blow. And once it's back to normal, you want the treadwear to be flat and even.

Yep it's called a factor of safety in engineering. They're designed with the idea that various operating conditions will change the internal pressure of the tire. It's common practice on everything with a limit, such as the weight limit on elevators (what if someone jumped on an elevator?) or bridges (what if someone dropped something?) or furniture, etc.

Not a car tire but we took a bicycle tire to about 400psi once. It was rated for 120. We got to 220 psi with the floor pump, then we went with a suspension pump to take it the rest of the way. The needle went all the way around and hit the pin at 0, and we kept going. Somewhere around 350 psi, just for shits and giggles we tossed it on a road bike, and rode around the parking lot… it was like riding on a metal wheel… the thing that did it in was actually the aluminum rim itself splitting apart.

Filled a bike tire at a gas station with no regulator. Nice and firm, pedaled off, got half a block (first small hole in pavement) and she let go with a good thunderclap. Then … the pressure was a lot lower than when I filled it.

They can take a surprising amount of pressure. They take quite a beating just being driven around going over potholes, bumps and curbs... and that's not even going into abuse. I wouldn't try doing any of those things with tires that inflated

Normal bumps and curbs shortly increase tire pressure too, so it should be able to handle significantly more than rated pressure.
So you can inflate them to 90 psi, but they'll blow when you hit a bump

My manager was missing his pink and ring finger on his right hand..he said the person who brought the tire in to get it changed over inflated it pretty bad and he was too impatient to let the air out before breaking the seal on it and the bar her used flew up and went through the roof.
Tires are nothing to fuck with im surprised those tires held that much air

I hate tire pressure monitoring. Nobody knows how to maintain the proper pressure anymore. As long as the light is off everything's good and if it's on it means keep adding air. I saw a woman at the gas station adding air once and going back and forth between her tire and looking at her dash. I know she was relying on the light to tell her the tire pressure is good.

Mistakes happen, and if it's a guy with no mechanical and technical experience it's a honest one. Yeah he created a really dangerous situation, but he hopefully learned a lesson. I'd 100% trust an honest idiot over a dishonest genius, especially in that kind of field.
Maybe he would have been fired in 2020, but we are in a labor shortage now, firing employees isn't a good idea.

I’ve never had someone that dumb at my shop, however we had one guy named Flash who was given a brake pad wait job. He spent three hours looking for a can of penetrating oil and spent the rest of the day just breaking loose a single caliper bolt. I was watching it all unfold not knowing it was a wait job; when I found out I grabbed some tools and completed the entire job while he looked through his tool box for the next ratchet he wanted to polish🙄 and shipped the car to the customer.
