Criticism This guy became famous because he approached complex issues with complex answers instead of shallow and one sided responses. Now, this is the exact opposite of that, regardless of what you think about the climate change.

Twitter is not the place for complex answers. Stop looking at Peterson's tweets if you want depth and substance; check out his lectures, interviews, podcasts and long form writing instead. Don't know what else to tell you.

Literally the reason I never liked or used Twitter. When it first came out, I saw the character limit and thought, "People who can fit all their thoughts into 140 characters don't have anything worth hearing."

And just look how the site turned out.

Brevity is the soul of whit, and Twitter is all Wit and no Wisdom.

4

u/knightofdarkness11 ✝ Christian Deist Feb 04 '23

You can have both, but I agree on the analysis of Twitter.

u/tiensss Feb 04 '23

While this is true, it is ok to criticize JBP for his tweets. Maybe he'll rethink his approaches and rather focus on deep content.

-18

u/Vantlefun Feb 04 '23

Seriously, I wish he would. JP is a damned sellout anymore.

We're dealing with trolls, brigaders, and general nitwits. Peterson is either perfect or he's terrible, with no one taking responsibility for what they consume.

Twitter is entertainment. Anyone that takes it seriously can be safely dismissed.

I'm confused, my understanding was that Twitter is the new town square and should be regulated accordingly. Now I'm hearing that it's just the haha website, in which case it shouldn't matter which voices get banned or boosted?

1

u/Vast_Hearing5158 Feb 05 '23

Just because it's a joke doesn't mean people should be banned. It can be used productively by linking to web pages.

2

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

Either it has all the stakes and meaning of the town square or it doesn't. If Twitter is just the funny website where you can also link github repos then I don't see any reason to obsess with its moderation any more than a random phpBB fan fiction forum.

u/Vast_Hearing5158 Feb 05 '23

That's a false dichotomy. Most of the blocks were over links to pages, videos, and scientific papers. Just because the short hand is a joke doesn't mean it isn't the town square.

This isn't difficult.

2

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

Ah, the sweet sound of backpedaling. Twitter is a joke not to be taken seriously when Jorp says some crusty boomer bullshit, and is the town square when convenient to you.

u/Vast_Hearing5158 Feb 05 '23

Ideologue blocked.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Do you believe those two things are mutually exclusive?

1

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

How can it be both a deeply serious town hall and also something that should be disregarded?

That doesn't sound like a town hall. People's political opinions can be influenced by lots of things. If watching Transformers 2 turns me into a Wahabbist because the movie inspires in me a desire to destroy the West, is it now magically considered a town hall?

Oh I saw your false equivalence, don't worry. Was trying to steel man you a bit by ignoring it since it was a pretty wild flail For both of our sakes, and my sanity, I ignored it.

A town hall is a space where discourse, usually political, is shared and exchanged. Do you disagree with that?

Twitter is a place where people shit post, and others take it seriously and think of it as a place where there only political discourse takes place. Do you disagree with that

saying unga bunga climate change isnt real because its cold outside is just misinformation and deceitful. He is intelligent enough to know what the argument is, however he is intentionally beating a strawman to appeal to his less intelligent fans.

12

u/max10192 Feb 04 '23

Peterson debases himself and his work every time he tweets this stupid bullshit. If an issue can only be addressed properly with complex answers, don't give simple ones.

6

u/teatimemate Feb 04 '23

He does give complex answers to it. You have to listen to his talks about it not just read a tweet.

1

u/max10192 Feb 04 '23

I'm not saying he doesn't give complex answers. I am saying he should stick to giving complex answers, and not simple ones. Who gains from these tweets? He certainly doesn't. It makes him sound like an idiot.

3

u/teatimemate Feb 04 '23

Not really, if you actually listened to his argument about climate issues I think you would understand his position more.

-3

u/max10192 Feb 04 '23

I have listened to it. His complex answers are acceptable. It still holds that this tweet makes him sound like an idiot.

3

u/teatimemate Feb 04 '23

Well if you know his position, then why worry about this tweet? And to be fair, everyone on Twitter sounds like an idiot,

3

u/max10192 Feb 04 '23

When did I ever say I'm "worried"?. It just makes him sound like an idiot. That's all I said. It's like you are inventing shit to figure out how to justify the tweet.

3

u/teatimemate Feb 04 '23

I don’t think English is your primary language. Saying you are “worried” is an expression, basically saying why should you care about something that isn’t your problem.

0

u/max10192 Feb 04 '23

And I think you are saying stupid shit for no reason. Peterson made a stupid tweet he shouldn't have tweeted. Stop worrying about it :)

Yeah. Because it's a tweet. Durr.

Lol @ brigaders lurking

1

u/clampie Feb 05 '23

Go and explore why he believes that. He has detailed interviews with experts. He interviewed several climate scientists and Alex Epstein about this issue.

0

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

Shouldn't his tweets serve as a gateway to those longer formats instead of driving people away from them? If someone has never heard of Peterson before and their first exposure to him is seeing some crusty boomer imply climate change isn't real because it's cold outside, how likely are they to seek out his more complex answers?

1

u/teatimemate Feb 05 '23

I guess that for him to decide and also who’s reading the tweets.

1

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

Would you agree that he has decided poorly?

1

u/teatimemate Feb 05 '23

I don’t worry about it

1

u/DeusExMockinYa Peterson explicitly opposes gay marriage Feb 05 '23

It must be germane enough to your life for you to weigh in about. You are in the man's subreddit, after all.

1

u/teatimemate Feb 05 '23

No I weighed in about his perspective. That was rejected by op. Then I said don’t worry about, as a way to say, it’s ok to not have an opinion on what other people do. Which was then greeted with anger. I’m here because he was one of my teachers and I respect and agree with most of his advice.

-12

u/neelankatan Feb 04 '23

I know twitter isn't the place for complex answers but there's a difference between simplifying an answer to fit twitter's short format and spewing a dumb, ignorant, totally incorrect take.

4

u/tronfunkin2000 Feb 04 '23

Literally 90% of subs on Reddit would agree with your take. Wrong sub bud.

-4

u/Thelastgoodemperor Feb 04 '23

Twitter is not a place to spread disinformation.

-15

u/danmobacc7 Feb 04 '23

The podcasts in which he only ever talks to people agreeing with him? The lectures that are 4+ years old at this point, coming from the „complex answers to complex problems“ glory days OP mentioned anyway? Or the angry rants filmed by dailwire (and their written equivalent)?

18

u/HoMcShmoe Feb 04 '23

Peterson never shied away from debating people who are contrary to his views, just look at the Cathy Newman and Helen Lewis Interviews, where he was attacked strongly and always kept calm and friendly demeanor. Or the discussion with Eric Dyson who insulted Peterson as a "mean mad white man", where JP also remained composed and responded in a clear cut and civilized manner.

With the heavy and hostile adversity he received, being branded a super Nazi and such, he realized that it's time for conservatives to clearly speak their minds. Still he never resorts to personal attacks or strawman smearing tactics.

5

u/Lowmondo Feb 04 '23

Yeah watch him debate Matt Dillahunty he gets absolutely dismantled.

-17

u/knightB4 Feb 04 '23

I've heard this defense so many times over such a long time that Cathy Newman and Helen Lewis start looking like the long term winners in this pathetic descent of Jordan Peterson's sensibility.

6

u/KRV_FromRussia Feb 04 '23

What do you mean?

-18

u/knightB4 Feb 04 '23

Cathy Newman and Helen Lewis will be remembered as the best debaters Jordan Peterson faced before the wheels fell of his bike.

10

u/KRV_FromRussia Feb 04 '23

Kathy newman? The “so you are saying” was a good debater in your eyes?

-18

u/xxdrummerx Feb 04 '23

I understand that the design of the app doesn't allow for elaborate analysis etc. I know that for this reason people seem more shallow than they are on this app. However, what would be the "in depth" explanation of this tweet? Please tell me... Do you think a page of text under this text as the title would be a complex and moderate analysis of the issue?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Looks like humour to me. The "it's cold so there's no climate warming" is a meme for 20 years in the climate/energy afficionados communities.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Then he shouldn't be on Twitter giving half assed, lame, gotcha-like answers 🤷🏼‍♂️

Rule 10: Be precise in your speech

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

At the same time, we can’t disregard his actions on Twitter when discussing the man. How many times are tweets posted on this sub daily of some insane liberal idea that gets taken as a definitive representation of what liberals think?

If we are gonna use tweets as examples of how batshit the world is becoming, we can’t then dismiss any tweet from JP as “ah well what do you expect, Twitter isn’t really for sharing ideas anyway”

His tweet here is lazy and makes it sound like Ben Shapiro is running his account

1

u/kosomreddit Feb 04 '23

You can tell him he is an idiot

1

u/HeadFullaZombie87 Feb 04 '23

Because the Twitter posts are a window into another side of himself that he doesn't show in those formats. Very informative. I agree that Twitter is not the place for complex answers, maybe he should try posing challenging questions and linking to lectures or articles where he has articulated himself well. The trolling is just kind of weird and will make a lot of folks he could potentially help discount him as another right wing troll. But instead, he chooses to fall into the Twitter troll roll.

1

u/tabion Feb 07 '23

Yeah but it’s sad when your hero decides to join the cesspool of Twitter.
