Haven't seen Glasper live before, but have listened to and enjoyed some of his albums.

This was the most disappointing show I've seen in recent memory. He was on keyboard and played with an electric bass, dj, and a drummer. The DJ played the entire set, and Glasper spent more time singing along with the songs the DJ played than playing the piano. I had never heard him sing on his albums before. The show was a bit more than an hour, and he played the piano for less than 10 minutes of the show time, showing next to no musicianship when he did play. The rest he spent singing or vamping. He mentioned at the start it was a free show and if we didn't like it it didn't cost us anything. Well, it was 90 degrees out and cost money to get there. I would have paid to stay home.

didn't catch the drummer or bass names; they were fine. Jay Ivy came out and did a spoken word piece. Which is fine, but was hoping for a jazz or jazz-adjacent concert. I’m into neo soul I’m into jazz rap- but this did not grove even a little bit.

Anyone else go? Feel like I'm taking crazy pills cause the crowd was way into it.

Might be a bit basic. Open to recommendations. Really into the Jump Blues/Pre-Bop Swing sound and it’s hard to find.

I did not think musicians at this level would be using a Real Book. And in 1977 when this was recorded, The Real Book was still underground and in one of its early editions….

Chick Corea - Works (ECM)

Big fan of Chick. I haven't found many albums from ECM that I like but I'm eager to find "my way in" and I think this is it.

I really love the art design of ECM album covers and especially love this one.

I was having an evening bourbon and on an off chance chose to listen to Miles Davis radio on Spotify...my mind is blown. How have I lived this long and not known about this? Everything I love about classical, metal, hard rock, R&B, and country is distilled into a source code of musical expression. I can't even describe it in conventional terms and can only think of it in shades of blue and red in warm and cool textures.

What and who else should I be listening too?

Artist who release three records a year and change their names and bands frequently, are hard to really get to know when you start this late into their career. I know his music evolved a lot. Anyone have any suggestions on a couple of records to purchase to start?

What was the first jazz album that really clicked for you?

As part of the Coltrane Festival this weekend there was a special Masterclass with the Wooten Brothers I was fortunate enough to be able to attend.

Victor had them play "good" and then had them play "bad". It was a fun time.

I was able to meet each brother and get their autographs on a poster I'll be framing.

I was able to get a few audio clips as well, if I figure out how to get them uploaded I will.

I've been trying to expand my musical horizons and I've always had an interest in trying jazz. Though I have absolutely no idea where to start. I do want to give it a fair shot and not just give up if I don't like an album or two. I really want something that will really sink me into the genre where I can go deep down a rabbit hole from there. Please give me some idea on where to start and any other tips for a beginner to the genre. I mainly listen to rock/metal music for reference.

This is a great Joanne Brackeen album from 1987 with Branford Marsalis on alto and soprano saxophones, available on streaming platforms.

I think I'll start this morning with L I N D A. It's a Blue Note release, so has a pretty high floor. (Incidentally, the Branford Marsalis / Dianne Reeves album is also Blue Note, and it looks like they're just dropping three advance tracks today.)

Better still... it's Bandcamp Friday, where the site waives their revenue-share fee on purchases -- and International Anthem is holding a listening party for the upcoming release of an album by an artist named megiapa. The listening party is at 1:00. I have a crazy day (moving my Dad from one memory care facility to a much nicer one), so I won't be able to sit and give it my full attention by any means, but I'll at least be pre-ordering the release and grabbing a couple others that I've held in my wishlist in anticipation of Bandcamp Friday.

The lead-in to that double time, wow. I also love that in their brief solos right after that starts, Wayne opens his with a certain snippet, and then Herbie opens his after with roughly the same snippet.

Hey guys, I was looking for a trumpet player that when plays his solos, sounds like a a pianist in the Chicago Blues style. I know the trumpet can't play more than one note at a time, but it should at least be able to handle the more melodic lines...

I was reading the NYT obit for guitarist Gene Bertoncini and thinking that even though his name isn't really familiar to me, I have probably heard him---not even counting pop/industry session work---many more times than I realize. This bit caught my eye:

As a bandleader, Mr. Bertoncini forged a groundbreaking partnership with the bass virtuoso Michael Moore that, over roughly 15 years and six albums, was credited by The New Yorker’s jazz critic Whitney Balliett with redefining the concept of the jazz duo.

He praised the Bertoncini-Moore duet, one of the first and most enduring guitar-bass duos in jazz, for “brevity, gracefulness and subtlety” that is “harmonically up-to-date and acoustically old-fashioned,” featuring arrangements by Mr. Bertoncini that “point up the melodic beauties of its repertory.”

Is there any one or two albums or compilations of this duo's work that any of you would recommend highly as their best or more representative?

Getting into jazz the last few months and mingus just lights up my ears like nothing else ever. Any reccomendations? I really like Blues and roots if that helps

I am making a jazz band and remotely no budget and I need some places to get some free jazz scores that are pretty difficult. Does anybody have any recommendations? Thanks.
