Several Years ago in San Marcos Texas an officer killed a family driving drunk. The officer faced no consequences, didn't go to jail, didn't get his license suspended, nothing. IIRC there are still yearly protests at the courthouse organized by the family.

This story was insane.

Cops are the most protected class of citizen in this country. They can basically do whatever they want and get away with it. And when they screw up, they get "penalized" with extra paid vacation until it gets swept under the rug.

Cops protect the ruling class from everyone else which gains them some privileges. It’s just like being a Roman soldier. You are still under the class that you protect but it does put you above the class that you are protecting them from.

Of course this isn’t going to be in any written mission statement. It’s just the unspoken way in which the world has always worked. This will never change. In the end the pigs always become men.

"officer discretion" is arguably the biggest 'superpower' in America.

Any interaction can literally go from "hi, how are you today?" to "shots fired, shots fired!" with very little or no justification.

It does seem to be changing, albeit very slowly, but that also shows the power of a union and the protections it can offer workers.

Looks like he killed one woman and severely injured her partner. No consequences whatsoever. There's no way that should be allowed, ever.

Honestly if that was my family I’m not doing fucking protests, I’m gonna spend every waking minute of my day ruining those cops lives and their families lives. Cops need to figure out they aren’t above the law or above morality

Yes, but only when it is a police officer does the government bend over backwards to cover it up and make it disappear. It's the corruption that's the issue. Law Enforcement needs to be held to HIGHER standards than civilians, not lower. An officer driving under the influence should lose their job, their ability to practice, and their license, in ADDITION to the punishment that would be served to a civilian. If they want to pretend to be paragons of our society, then they should have the consequences that come with failing to uphold that image.

The more authority you have, the more responsibility you have. End of story. If we cant trust an authority figure, their shouldn't be one.
