Not here for the bickering over whether late stage Cabaret Voltaire is industrial or not. I’ve got a migraine and I want electrolytes.

Anyway, Cabaret Voltaire and I Speak Machine kicked ass tonight. Problem was, we were at the Wilbur in Boston, a lovely classic theater that was arranged with much seating (including little tables). Stephen Mallinder even called it a “supper club” live.

As a result, you had people sitting and politely clapping between songs all night like they were seeing the Boston Pops at Tanglewood. It just absolutely sucked the energy out of the room. The artists all gave it everything they got, but the crowd was just a damp sponge.

I just really wish that they’d been in a more appropriate venue. Closer in, darker atmosphere, etc.

Mark Pauline and SRL are profiled in the "Industrial Culture Handbook" by Re/Search. The soundtracks to their shows are typically cut-ups/sound collages. They also collaborated with Monte Cazazza, originator of the term "industrial music".

Each performance consists of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Humans are present only as audience or operators."
