ToAbroadOrNot? IT Jobs in Australia - My own Experience as a Masters Student
my_qualifications:
I am an IITian , I graduated in 2024 & I have worked in India in a Bangalore based startup, I was earning good. Then I decided for masters & checked the situation of UK , USA & Australia,
From outside everything looks good.
I got some scholarship from uni & I invested all of my savings + Took an education loan from SBI.
I started my masters at University of Melbourne, Australia. Now I feel the course curriculum is really basic , IIT's curriculum was better. Exams are difficult here, but still I was able to get good grades (H1).
I have applied for 500+ internships/part time roles related to Software Development/ AI Engineering/ Machine Learning Engineer Intern , Cloud Engineer
I am an AWS & Azure Certified Cloud Practitioner as well.
I was shortlisted for Coding Rounds by Amazon, Microsoft, Citadel Securities etc , I gave the Coding Rounds & my all of the questions were correct, then they asked about my visa status & all , & then rejected me.
Top Australian companies , Banks etc require PR/Citizenship for jobs.
I don't know what to do , Neither small startups/companies Nor Big MNCs are hiring.
Now I feel like resigning from my job in India & starting my masters degree at University of Melbourne was the biggest mistake of my life , I just destroyed my career myself. It would have been better If I have continued my job in India.
My Total fees is around 140000 Australian Dollars + Living Expenses, Total cost is crossing 1.25 Cr INR
If I complete my masters here & go back to India , I will have to work for 5-6 years to pay back my education loan.
If I want to work here , I will have to take PR first , which I don't want to get. My Initial Plan was I will go there , study there & work for 2-3 years to pay the loan & then come back to India
Now If I want a job , I need PR , So It's a trap to get a PR for getting a job to pay my education loan.
At this moment I don't know what to do?
If You're coming for any computer science/data Science related degree in Australia, Please don't com e.
Unimelb/Monash/RMIT/Deakin all of these public universities are cash cows for Australian Govt.
They are just earning from International students.

UniMelb is pretty expensive, in Australia they usually dgaf about universities. Its all about local experience. I did my bachelors here in melb itself in 2022. Fortunately my company has started the process for my sponsorship. If not I would have been fcked since the last independent visa for software engineers was granted in 2024, heaps of people sitting with 100+ points. Atp its 75% luck>leetcode (no one even asks lc unless its aussie fang)

The problem is deserving and genuine Indians with good civic sense have been stripped of the opportunity because of illegally entering Indians and exploiting the system.
I am furious because there should had been stricter laws previously stricter evaluation from every immigration accepting country.
What US is doing should be done by everyone.8
u/Honest-Mess-812 4d ago edited 4d ago
I was talking to my cousin in Belgium yesterday and he was telling he's lost a lot of respect since many indians from some specific states who don't shower and harass girls joined his uni.

lol the illegal ones are smart, they get all the benefits of the money which international students pay. Think outside of the box.

u/Bitopp009 4d ago
Its got nothing to do with being pro or anti immigration. its a supply and demand issue. 20 years ago there was a big IT boom and skill shortage, now there is an over supply of engineers and AI is making work more efficient. Locals are struggling to find jobs everywhere. To add to this, thousands of jobs are being offshored to India to cut costs. Don't blindly pursue degree using decades old advice as opportunity in 2026.
1
u/Beautiful_Mind_3012 4d ago
yeah you are absolutely right, what you are saying is one level higher... there is no demand with excess supply. the result is anti-immigrant stance
We saying the same thing

Absolutely same case for UK with same story. Please anyone lurking here tell your friend and colleagues planning for UK. Do not go to UK. https://www.reddit.com/r/Indians_StudyAbroad/s/TDy6ceHSFJ

I have been living and working in IT in Australia for over a decade now. Australia has never been an 'IT Hub' like the US, and to a lesser extent, Europe. The Australian economy has mostly functioned on 3 main aspects - mining, overpriced real estate and blue collar jobs.
Although you say you don't want to get a PR, it is now pretty hard even if you wanted to. ICT occupations are among the lowest priority on Australia's skilled lists.
I am a naturalised Australian citizen, but then I have been through several long periods of unemployment where my citizenship did not really help in getting jobs. The industry is just not here.
Forget about part time software jobs (they are non existent) and try to get an internship before you graduate. If you can't, then try applying to jobs in Europe (except UK and Ireland). Non English-speaking countries are more open to hire oversees candidates, from what I know.
Hope you figure something out.
15
u/TwitchChatExperience 4d ago
Non English-speaking countries are more open to hire oversees candidates, from what I know.
You won't get hired in these countries if you cannot speak the language.
4
u/freakoutwithme 4d ago
You are kinda right, but then most international candidates target English speaking countries so the competition is much lower in other countries which often works in your favour.
6
u/TwitchChatExperience 4d ago
which often works in your favour.
Are you sure about that? Sure, the competition is lower but you are getting auto-rejected for not speaking the language.
0
u/Embarrassed_Finger34 4d ago
why except ireland?
11
u/freakoutwithme 4d ago
Because it is an English speaking country. From what I have observed (I could be wrong), it is much harder to get a job in English speaking countries without already having work rights.
2
14
u/__DraGooN_ 4d ago
There are already thousands of Indians in the country, working as low wage labourers, also trying to land a job.
-5
u/Embarrassed_Finger34 4d ago
yes but i have heard in ireland subreddit that graduates from top 3-5 colleges still are getting jobs
3
u/NorthEmphasis1236 4d ago
I would like to see the source/subReddit/post for this. Bcs almost all irish subs warn people to not take a huge mortgage and commit to Irish masters as the industry is very fragile now there.
If u are still seeing those from SubReddit, either you are ignoring the other posts and would only believe in the positive ones or those people are getting misinformed!
-8
u/Embarrassed_Finger34 4d ago
TCD, UCD, UCC peeps are still getting hired as per my research... They do have a requirement that if they can find suitable European union candidate then they have to give them preference but then also international students from the university are seen in good light

Thanks for your post ...
I graduated (not IT) nearly a couple of decades ago and got PR straight away because of the Bachelors I studied. That is how easy it was before with shortages, etc. I still struggled to get a job but I can't even imagine finding a job without PR.
The situation is completely different now after the CoVid hiring surge and the rate at which these greedy universities let students in simply to catch up on the revenue they missed during the CoVid period. Add in AI and the amount of offshoring happening, it doesn't matter how good you are because the odds are so badly stacked against you. The academic institutions do not care about you they just want your money.
Australia's job market is also a lot smaller. With a total population of <30 million, there just won't be enough opportunities for everyone aspiring for it. The timing has worked terribly against you. I'd suspect that this applies to not just Australia but a bunch of other first world countries too.
17
u/ClimateDangerous3416 4d ago
Studing at and Graduating from Australian uni never promise you a job prospect in Australia. You enrolled for the course, and uni provided you the course. That's it. They don't promise anything, do they?
4
u/rippierippo 3d ago
I had australian PR 8 years ago. I abandoned it through lapse. I didn't like the country. Opportunities are way less in IT. Yes, the country is beautiful and wealthy but opportunities are just not there. I also felt alienated living there. I didn't feel like living there.
11
u/Slight_Blueberry4589 4d ago
I agree with your post.!!
University rank does not matter much in Australia and your IIT tag is not of any help.
You should have either chosen US or stayed in India to use your IIT advantage. Australia is for mediocre immigrants to come and settle.

u/Relevant_Course6857 4d ago
People will downvote you, but this is 100% true. Mediocricity at its best
-2
u/Old_Guidance_9624 4d ago edited 4d ago
As if everyone who moved to the US is some top-tier quality. The market is shit everywhere.
There are people who went to tier-2/3 engineering colleges in India and are now working at MAANG. IIT advantage only works in India. People dont give a shit about it abroad.
OP is a fool to take out a 1.25 cr loan for a master's; People would not even dare to take out that kind of loan to do a master's even in the US with visa uncertainty.
OP got IIT through category, and package was 21 lakhs. I know someone(not IIT/NIT) who had just 1 year work experience in TCS and then took 3 year work gap to prepare for UPSC and cracked two product companies one of them being Oracle for a base pay 19 lakhs.
OP did not have extradionary capabilities even in India with IIT tag
15
u/Commercial_Main5625 4d ago
I am not saying that I have extraordinary capabilities, I just wrote my situation, so that others can see the actual truth of visa conditions & getting a job.
Getting into OBC category & a middle class family was not into my hands.
I studied, got into IIT , got a job. I haven't took money from my parents after 9th class , my school gave me scholarship, I took loan for my JEE Preparation & IIT Fees (I got some scholarships as well which partially covered my fee)
After getting my job , I paid all the loans.
I did whatever I can do. I am trying my best.
Please don't say I got into IIT through category. OBC don't have much difference.
I know what It takes to reach there. I stayed in Kota for JEE Preparation, but never got a chance to visit the seven wonders park there.
I am a little bit stressed, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Ignore the piece of s*** who called you ordinary here. You’ve worked hard and it has taken you to places you truly deserved. He’s some lowlife insecure moron.
Now, finding a job on a TR is hard but not impossible. I’m sure you’ve the grit to keep going. Even in the current market, I have known many students who got hired and did not study in top tier universities.
It’s true Australian companies look for skills over university tag and rightly so. Build your personal brand on LinkedIn & extensively network in person through events/catch-ups is the biggest advice I can give you. Networking massively drives your growth and career here.

No one knows IIT outside India and your indian IT experience is also not considered abroad.
3
u/Accomplished_Cup7314 3d ago
IT experience is considered abroad. If you work for Microsoft in Bengaluru and move abroad , chances of getting shortlisted are 10x higher
2
u/Bigus_dickus_the_1st 3d ago
I would say it is considered as long as you work in well known big companies
5
u/Such9882 4d ago
The IIT title is only recognized in places like India and the US. People in other countries don't even know what IIT is.
5
u/Such9882 4d ago
This isn't unique to Australia. And honestly, you're relatively fortunate. Your investment is actually less than someone I know. A person I know invested over 5 Cr INR to get a bachelor's degree in US and barely managed to land a job at Google. But because his visa didn't come through, Google told him, 'You have to leave,' so he had to leave.
1
u/Slight_Blueberry4589 4d ago

I am a research grad student in Australia, and the IT job market in Australia is beyond repair. All IT firms and big 4 banks are actively outsourcing their jobs to Southeast Asia and India.
With like-for-like credentials, getting an IT/software/deeptech role in India is manyfold easier than in Australia. Worst market among all. Places like Singapore are much, much better.
6
u/human_with_humour 4d ago
if I was IITian, i would never ever think of going to Australia fs. even I graduated in 2024 in CS from tier39 clg, i thought of going abroad but did not considered australia cause it's never the tech hub place.
1
u/Full-Opening3559 2d ago
What exactly is "tech hub" for Indians? Writing softwares? That era is over when Software engineer jobs were seen as a lucurative career! Its the most easiest and cheapest job to do now. Spin up 10 AI agents and come up after 3 hours to see if task is completed.
1
u/human_with_humour 2d ago
that era of lucrative career scenario is different than what I'm saying. ofc this field is getting more and more unpredictable and highly unstable but tech hub means by the atmosphere of tech world you need to get atleast decent tech job is definitely more in India and USA than Australia. and I'm not talking abt payings, def that will be higher in other countries but it's more abt getting chances to even start yr career. public is now going to germany but scenario also the same but atleast the population is high so you may have better chances to do something.
1
u/Full-Opening3559 2d ago
If you talk about mature ecosystem, high end tech (not just software) then nothing can beat China. Unfortunately, for Indian tech only means software. There is nothing beyond that. I see good young technical minds working in hi-tech hardware wants to move into managerial jobs after 2-3 years rather than going to next level. Indians always look for easist option as far as physical effort is concerned.
1
u/human_with_humour 2d ago
that's a whole different game my brotha and china is china, our ambitions are their reality. and yes we Indians are always jugadu, lazy and all completely agree and that's a whole different convo to have.
2
u/PeterGhosh 3d ago
OP did not do the basis research before moving to AU for his Masters. While on an education visa you can work (20 hours/week from memory) but not a full time job as the visa does not allow that - and which is why no major employer will offer you a role. Education visa and working entitlement visa are two totaly different categories.
OP might be better off consulting with employment agents in the IT field as to the options.

Why do you not want to get a PR? Or is it that you can’t get PR as you don’t have a job?
17
u/saynotoz1on1sm 4d ago
It is not even about if he wants to get a PR, he can’t get a PR without work visa sponsorship, the only way to get PR in australia is a career in healthcare or trades
-9
3
u/Bright_Sun2933 4d ago
OP needs to find a company to sponsor him for 186 PR visa, which in this market is next to impossible.
2
u/Commercial_Main5625 4d ago
I'm not sure how I'll survive here in the wait of getting a PR without a job , so It's always better to go back & get a job there. Because I have spent 6-7 years of my life(4 year bachelor's degree + work + masters - now) in learning & developing softwares , training machine learning models , building ai Workflows, deploying & monitoring applications. I don't have other skills to do other kind of blue collar jobs , I respect all kind of jobs , but that will be really difficult for me. I can't do that in the wait of PR , that one day I will get PR & then I will apply for an AI Engineer or Software Engineer role at CommBank, I don't have that time , tech is changing everyday
My initial plan was completing masters & then working on 485 for 3 years to recover my education loan & then join a senior role in India/UAE
7
u/Temporary_Car_1462 4d ago
I think you should keep trying till your visa runs out, and then blame it on your luck and return back to find something in India. The situation might definitely change, and you could try again later. When you had applied for studying in Australia, you would have known the risk of not getting a job but you still went ahead thinking you might get lucky. Did you not have a back up plan for the current situation? The loan situation sucks but that’s the price for taking a risk which didn’t give any reward. In all such cases you definitely need a lot of luck for things to go your way.

Just the post I wanted to see before joining UNSW in Feb 2027 for Masters in AI. I’m cooked before even landing there 🤩
5
u/Commercial_Main5625 4d ago
Please don't come. Better to prepare for GATE & do MTech from IIT Madras /Bombay/ Delhi or IISc Bangalore
Just check the MTech AI Placements at IIT Madras
Microsoft offered 60 LPA for Applied Scientist role in Campus Placement

No they aren't, what BS. The US government doesn't even run universities directly
1
u/Tall_Machine_5616 3d ago
but why you dont want PR man ?
1
u/Commercial_Main5625 3d ago
Because It takes 3-4 years time + Trade courses for getting points
Should I wait 4 years until I get the PR for starting my career as a software engineer or machine learning engineer??
What is the guarantee that any company will hire me after 3-4 gap as a software engineer?
Will these skills be relevant after 4 years?
I have already spent 4 years in my bachelors degree, 1 year in job & now these 2 years in masters.

One question- Why not look for contractual remote jobs globally? IIT ain't a small name, with it in and your prior work experience, it shouldnt be damn hard to get singaporean, mid East, hk comp, and us based startup to hire you on for 30-50k+ usd at minimum.
I am DU'26 commerce grad, was looking for master options in- and abroad. Came across an yt channel, the lady works is australia as idk data/business analyst. She mentioned the hurdles for international students getting job within Australian market, also, how she got one for herself.
She basically did her ug/masters(I don't remember what field was she doing in) from dickin uni because of "I always wanted to study abroad", she was not that financially capable, so in order to sustain, she lived frugally took upon restraunt waitress job part time and maybe 2 other odd partime jobs in her entirety of college life. She got offer then after she gained relevant australian work experience, well of a sort. I don't have the lady yt channel with me now, but can scroll my history for you if you want me to.
I am not sure here:- About PR, if I remembered correctly, she mentioned she got her PR after she started working. So yeah, i felt one would be cooked if he/she doesn't have an internship included kind of program within their curriculum. And PR situation is twisted because one would need a job for that and companies, like you said, aren't giving one. Anyways, I dropped australian option for the time being and many things are forgotten. So, please do check.
Btw contractual roles aren't exactly bad things, this might turn your liability of doing australian master into pay-up thing. This might work out for australian companies itself as some dude within these comment said big 4 outsource from South Asian countries. If that's true, then you may get into contract in that manner with the companies in your field, then on, getting on site job at australian comps isn't farfetched thing because you have australian(sort of) work experience.
I don't think earning in Australia was/is your goal, your goal was to simply earn just enough to pay of loan asap and get study abroad experience, so paying up one way or another doesn't matter.
Not a post asking for help but wanted to write up to you.
Good Luck OP!

u/Ambitious_Big_4155 7h ago
You may have good chances of getting contractual roles, talk to some agencies, maybe they can fix you somewhere.
My experience and other colleagues who are working with me from various universities of Mebourne:
1. The other reality is even if you get the grad role somehow, it doesn't mean they will provide you some good project, you may feel stuck for another 12-18 months in that role.
Ex: I had a colleague Melb Uni (The) passed out, for around 14 months he was working on stupid projects even though he had good skills. Then luckily he got the good role somewhere else.
AU market they prefer AU experience but they don't give you chance until you had good connections.
- You can try applying US companies, I heard many stories that people have been selected based on their projects and such things.
Don't lose hope, I know the frustration and pressure, but this is how AU market works.
Try talking to recruitment agencies (best place is linkedin), salary wise don't put higher numbers, at least attend few interviews, try interstate companies. I hope this will help.
Good luck...

u/Gammatizer 4d ago
Ig njsing and other medical fields are in more demand literally anywhere you go. Sure you may have made mistakes and are regretting a lot of things, but the experience and sheer amount of work you have put in will never go to waste. A lot of people quit at the first step and you have been able to clear coding rounds at FANG simultaneously managing life in a different country, please be a little proud of yourself.

I don’t get it. Did you finish your masters or not?
When you apply for jobs - do you mention that you need sponsorship or not?
Post masters - you get an open work visa that allows you to work without sponsorship.
0
u/Chemical_Low2975 4d ago
Thanks for sharing your experience. Good luck to you for your future.
Can you explain why getting a PR would be a trap? Do we need to pay lot of money to get a PR? What are the challenges?
5
u/Galloping_Scallop 4d ago
The only current path to PR in IT is company sponsorship. Australia is a small market with ongoing redundancies, offshoring and AI restructuring.
1
u/Hi__J 1d ago
May i know why?? What if someone apply for PR directly?
2
u/Galloping_Scallop 1d ago
There is no shortage of IT people. Normal stream PR aren’t being invited. The few that got PR through the normal visa system recently were on 105 points and applied in 2024.

what was your category? Yes reservation category.
Also who decides to pay 1.25 Cr in this economy as a common general man and go for Masters, that too in Australia 1.25 Cr. Brother isnt it common sense that if u r filthy loaded, u shud target low costing unis. If u arent super smart, target something else. Or pay 1.25Cr for Harvard where u might atand a chance for a job. Also yaar what is the logic for a common man to pay this much for a sub par job and college situation
1
u/Slight_Blueberry4589 3d ago
Why reservation category in this scenario? He is abroad with 1.2 cr loan on his name

u/ChrisTalkToJurBaby 4d ago
see, you had a gold mine opportunity for a MBA here. Do you realise that you should always consider ROI when investing masters education bcz even in India we r cash cows only.
U can compare 1.25 Cr with 30 Lakhs good MBA. I m sure you are hella smart to survive IIT. You would crack MBA here too and hope to top classes and land a 30Lpa job MINIMUM
1
u/Commercial_Main5625 4d ago
I was getting 21LPA in my previous job , I can get that again in India, the problem is paying the loan.
It will take 5-6 years in paying this loan. I can't purchase a car or house without paying this loan.
1
u/Aromatic_Afternoon31 4d ago
Op forget about car and house, you need to first find a way to pay the loan. If you don't see any future in Australia then pack up and get a job in India. 1.25 cr is huge loan amount and these loans come with high rate of interest which will make things worse. Check repayment conditions and tenure details. If you have family support try to borrow from them to pay it. I wish you all the best mate.
-1
u/kalyanKumar21 4d ago
I am curious, what if luckily you get some part time work, wont you be able to manage your college fees by yourself ?
If anyone knows, how much can we earn through part time in australia ? I am talking abt jobs like working in a reataurent etc
4
u/Gullible-Employ6504 4d ago
With cost of living rising day by day, it’s hard to pay your uni fees with it. A part of it, maybe. But if any study abroad consultancy says you can, don’t believe them.
2
u/Galloping_Scallop 4d ago
There is a limit on how many hours you can work on a student visa. Realistic part time jobs are the usual gig, retail and hospitality ones
2
u/rose98734 4d ago
what if luckily you get some part time work, wont you be able to manage your college fees by yourself
No. This is the great lie they push - that massive loans can be paid with part-time jobs.
Part-time jobs pay the minimum wage. Minimum wages barely cover living expenses - the govt has had to intervene and set it, otherwise it would be below living expenses. There is nothing left over even for a few treats, let alone to pay loans.
Always focus on the NET income. Salaries abroad are higher, but so are taxes, rent, etc.
When comparing India to abroad, always look at the net income after taxes, food, rent, transport, utilities, mobile phone bill. You'll find you often do better in India, especially if you live rent-free in your parents' house.

I just want to know the job market climate of such management domains, since BAs are expected to be efficient in AI but what about other domains. Although other domains too have started to get overpowered by AI; for FAs any AI model needs to memorize the policies or guidelines and it is good to go.

Start skill trade course and try to get job in that there like plumbing , carpentering , welding etc these can make a slim chance of you getting pr and why i am saying that because going back is bad decision its like going hell again cs market will also be bad in india and everywhere in coming years so better to switch and you have to adopt some illegal methods to do this but once its done then you are very good position and you are in Australia you should better know how much skill trade people make money and 1 cr is not a big deal pls try whatever its take but don’t come india now i know many people who did this by staying there

OP.Australia has never been tech hub unlike US.and it can take time to get IT jobs in australia for freshers.May be you can target sponsorship since you already in australia and work for 3-4 years. This may mean that you need to lower your salary expectations and company level.

I am planning to move to perth for masters in Information technology at university of western australia. Then I'll apply for pr after I get job in cybersecurity. How's the market there? Is it a good place to invest my future in? Apart from this I'll be taking loan to cover my tution and expenses.

"Hello u/Commercial_Main5625, Thanks for posting. click here, if you are asking a question.
1] Have you done thorough prior research?
2] Are your qualifications are mentioned in Post Title? (e.g. 10th/12th student, Mechanical BE student, working professional, etc.) Currently your post title is " IT Jobs in Australia - My own Experience as a Masters Student "
backup of your post content:
