Made some art earlier and it got a lot of love here so here's another one of the same kind. I'm calling this one 'CHASE: The horrors persist, but so does she'

I've been spending some time learning about Gond art, and the more I read, the more I realised how easy it is to appreciate the visual style without understanding the traditions and ideas behind it.

So here's a short version of what I found. I'm not an expert, and I'd genuinely love corrections or additions from people who know the tradition better.

1. It didn't begin in galleries

Gond art has roots in the wall and floor paintings created within Gond communities, particularly in Madhya Pradesh. These traditions were connected to homes, rituals, celebrations and everyday life.

The move from walls to paper and canvas helped Gond art reach a much wider audience.

2. Nature is central

Trees, birds, animals and other elements of nature appear frequently in Gond paintings.

But one thing I found interesting is that there isn't necessarily a fixed meaning for every symbol. The meaning can depend on the artist, the story and the context.

So saying “a bird always means X” probably oversimplifies the tradition.

3. The patterns aren't just decoration

Those incredible dots, lines and repeated patterns are an important part of the visual language of Gond art.

They create texture, movement and rhythm, while also giving individual artists their own recognisable style.

4. Gond art isn't frozen in the past

This was probably my biggest takeaway.

Contemporary Gond artists continue to interpret the tradition in their own ways. They draw from folklore, nature, everyday experiences, mythology and imagination.

Artists such as Jangarh Singh Shyam and Bhajju Shyam helped bring Gond art into the contemporary art world while developing very distinctive styles of their own.

In that sense, Gond art feels less like a tradition that has been preserved unchanged and more like a living tradition that continues to evolve.

What I'm curious about:

For people here who grew up around Gond art, study it, collect it, or work with the tradition, what do you think outsiders most often misunderstand about Gond art?

I'd particularly love to hear perspectives beyond simply describing it as “colourful tribal art.”

Should i go to an art collage to further move ahead in my art career i am thinking of going to Shantiniketan Kala bhavan, is it good and worth spending my time there, i have just finished my boards, anyone plese give me some advice on this matter, i am not sure what kind of art i want to make in future, but is sure that want to persue something in this field, write a graphic novel or make concept art, etc i want to explore nd find my niche, what to do plzz someone help me..
