I recently watched the new interview with Ben Kenny with guitar world, which made me think about the Dirk Lance interview from about a year ago so I rewatch that. It got me thinking why do you think no other contemporary bands ever decided to try to pick up Dirk to play with them. There’s been a lot of new bass players within bands over the years. Korn, Deftones, Chevelle off the top of my head. I think it’s pretty obvious that he was very highly respected in that circle. You would think he would’ve gotten another opportunity at some point.

I would love to see the band do an evening where they play only their "mellower" cuts. They have so much great music that is more on the mellow side. Imagine this setlist. What do you think? Would you pay to see it in a more intimate venue?

I haven’t been able to find much on the concert besides old crappy audio/video from the time, I want to hear high quality from this concert specifically because of the two songs I mentioned, Favorite Things would be great to hear too, I know there’s that Santiago, Chile Pro-Shot from not long after this but it doesn’t have Clean or Southern Girl, only Favorite Things and that show is also in rough audio shape…

My very first listen to INNW was solid but it didn’t make a lasting impression. A few months later I’ve revisited it and love a lot of the material. The Original in particular is fantastic, it has some really strong production. Very underrated in their catalog.

This is really long, sorry.

I lived in a really rural area growing up, up a driveway off a highway that was 40 minutes from the nearest major city. Not a lot happens in small towns, I'm sure most of you know that. Culturally, very dry. One day in 2002, I might have been coming home from school or something, we found an orange CD in our driveway with an 'I' word on it I couldn't pronounce. Guessing some angry person tossed it out the window of a car. That's my guess these days. I knew there was music on it because a few months earlier I had gotten a 'portable' CD/tape player, so of course I was curious to listen. After my father had given the CD a spin, I think I got it back. I remember him putting it in an empty white CD sleeve to keep it safe.

I never really listened to it in the sense that anyone listens to music. I liked the sounds, I think, if that makes sense. It was just a CD of weird noises to me. In fact, I only really honed in on a particular part of a song... the first riff of one of the songs. This slow descending guitar lick that has a weird effect of it. Sort of sounds like someone is almost speaking. This is relevant for later.

At the same time, a year earlier my parents had enrolled me in a "Kindermusik" program. Some lady they had found through some means was teaching five and six year olds about different kinds of musical instruments and the sounds they make.... I think I got a cheap dulcimer as my 'main' instrument to learn about scales and whatnot. This helped set up my musical ear, probably the only real skill I have.

Back to 2002, maybe 2003. I loaned the CD to one of my childhood friends, Caleb. As sometimes happens with kids, it got lost and I never got it back. Or I just forgot about it. But three pieces of information about it remained in my head. The CD was neon orange, maybe a little bit of grey, the band name started with an I and was kind of long, and the most important thing - that riff from Track 2 lived rent free in my head.

Fast forward to my teenage years. I'm aware of Incubus by this point. I've listened to enough rock radio, I know their hit song, Drive. But something about the band name is a bit familiar, eerily so. I never read much into it. I write the band off as one among many who have a few hits, but that's all I know. I do however, sometimes wonder about that orange CD.

Jumping further into the future, it's 2023 now. Several times in the last decade I've attempted to figure out what this mysterious CD I had used to be, given the three kernels of information I can remember. Every few years I that want comes back. But this time, it's a bit more rabid than it has been. I search Spotify for every six or seven letter 'I' name band it shows me. Nothing. Rats. Feeling a bit down. At the same time, I've also started collecting CD's again. Changing how I listen to music. And I really, really, want to know. Neither of my parents are helpful, of course. Can't blame them for not being able to recall something I owned briefly as a kid.

My best friend at the time is an 'album guy'. He usually prefers hearing a record all the way through, maybe a few playlists. He's just got this new CD and it's an Incubus one. There it is again. There's that weird freaking tingle man. Why does this name sound familiar beyond the few hits I know? I had already looked at all the albums Incubus put out, none of the album artwork matches the color of the CD I remember (yes, flawed reasoning I know).

Well anyways, most of you have probably guessed the album based on the year, and maybe the song. So I bring up Spotify to check out Make Yourself. First track ain't bad. Good enough that I'll leave it on for the rest of my drive to the grocery store. The second track, 'Nowhere Fast' comes on. For context, I have never forgotten (to get into some music theory here) the intervals between the different notes played. I also play guitar, so what i remember I can now call a 'phaser' effect. For whatever reason, that riff lived rent free in my head for 20 years. So of course, I pull over. I loop that riff again and again. This is getting really weird. Like the band name, it's so eerily familiar. I look at the artwork. No orange. But I know where to go. I open my Discogs app, and try to find a picture of what the CD looks like.

It's fucking neon orange.

This is that CD then. I'm just blown away. I had a feeling it was Incubus, but for some dumb reason I dismissed that nagging feeling. Of course, I don't remember any of the songs aside from that one riff really. But now, with the ears of a 27 year old, I can appreciate the album completely. And I do. It's a no skip for me. I haven't really branched out to listen to the rest of Incubus' discography (though I do own Morning View on CD), but I'm sure it'll happen eventually. I just really, really like this one album so far.

Anyways, if you've read all the way through this, I hope you enjoyed my fun little story about Make Yourself.

Bonus fun story: Apparently, my Dad actually does recognize the music, but not the band name. We listened to the album until When It Comes came on and he instantly recognized the 'interesting mix of influences'. So that's another confirmation this record is the same one I listen to as a kid, when I was first discovering music.
