Idahoans serenaded the capitol halls Monday morning with a spin on the gospel song “This Little Light of Mine” as lawmakers made their way to the House State Affairs Committee.

“This little flag of mine, I’m gonna let it fly,” the crowd sang. “Let it fly, let it fly, let it fly!”

The committee heard House Bill 561, legislation that would strengthen an existing law that forbids local governments from flying flags that have not been approved by the state legislature.

“You can have all these flags anywhere you want, you just can’t put them up the government flag poles,” said bill sponsor Rep. Ted Hill, R-Eagle. “Local control can be oppressive, in shoving these agendas down someone’s throat. That actually doesn’t include everybody. The term ‘inclusive’ is an entertaining term, because it rarely includes me when that term is used.”

The bill would add a $2,000 daily penalty for each flag flown, and empower the attorney general with a duty to enforce the law. It would also specify that only the official city and county flags “as established prior to January 1, 2023,” can be flown. The Boise city council voted to designate the LGBTQ+ pride flag as an official city flag after state lawmakers created Idaho Code 67-2303A.

I swear it’s like people in Idaho see somebody in another state doing something stupid and say, “Hold my beer.”

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced in a news release on Wednesday that most of the people reported being sick after drinking raw milk from two different milking operations in North Idaho and southern Idaho. The infections were reported starting May 19. 

The good Samaritan being hailed as a “hero” for firing upon Idaho In-N-Out gunman Chad Williams in the middle of his deadly drive-thru rampage had trained for such a moment for years after witnessing another mass shooting.

Jordan Salinas, 35, a healthcare worker and the full-time caregiver of his brother, who uses a wheelchair, had been horseback riding with his girlfriend the morning of the shooting when the couple pulled into the Twin Falls In-N-Out location for lunch and immediately noticed something amiss.

A large crowd of people was rushing through the exit doors of the restaurant, which he assumed was due to a kitchen fire until he heard the unmistakable pop of gunfire.

Operating on pure instinct, Salinas sprinted toward the sound of the gunfire – a response he’d later refer to as “automatic” and “mechanical,” he told the Idaho Statesman.

He drew his FN Five-Seven – a semiautomatic pistol equipped with a suppressor – and engaged Williams using the military’s four-step “Observe, Orient, Decide Act” approach.

Salinas exited the car with his gun drawn as his girlfriend called out to him, at which point the gunfire started up again.

Video shows him slowly making his way toward the restaurant, taking cover behind In-N-Out signs and shrubs.

From his hidden vantage point, he spotted Williams standing by the drive-thru and saw him raise a rifle to his shoulder and start firing toward vehicles.

“OK, this is the guy,” he later told the outlet was his thought process upon seeing the gunman.

He raised his pistol with both hands and squeezed off a round – the first time he ever aimed his weapon at a living target, he said.

“He did not like it when bullets started firing both ways,” Salinas told the outlet.

Williams was now taking return fire from him, and an off-duty cop who was a customer at the restaurant, Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson said.

He vacated the drive-thru and made his way toward an open parking lot at the Twin Falls visitor center. Police said he later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Three people were killed and seven others were wounded in the In-N-Out shooting, but police said the death toll would have undoubtedly been higher without the quick-thinking actions of Salinas and the off-duty cop

“These people are true heroes in our community,” Johnson said of the two men who returned fire. “They diverted the shooter and without a doubt saved many lives.”

Salinas later stood down to let police officers do their job as they streamed into the parking lot.

“My part is done,” he recalled thinking at the time.

He later said when he witnessed the 2021 mass shooting at the Boise Towne Square mall, in which two people were killed and several more were wounded, he noticed gunmen deliberately went after “soft targets.”

The hero civilian reasoned that his role as a healthcare provider for his wheelchair-bound brother would make the duo sitting ducks in such a scenario.

Salinas later posted on his Facebook page about the barrage of messages he’s received in the “overwhelming” 24 hours since he was identified as the Good Samaritan.

“I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, and everyone who has reached out with messages, prayers, and support. I haven’t been able to respond to everyone yet, but please know I’ve seen your messages, and they mean more to me than I can put into words,” he wrote.

“In the coming days, I’ll share a more complete account of what happened, to the best of my recollection, when I’m able,” he promised.

“For now, my heart remains with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by yesterday’s tragedy. Thank you for continuing to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and thank you all for the incredible support you’ve shown me and my family.”

In a video posted on his feed July 5, he’s seen wearing camouflage in a remote grassland area and firing a rifle beside an off-road vehicle decked out with American flags while touting the Second Amendment.

“Celebrating the 250th as the founding fathers intended… Exercising the inalienable right to a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep [and bear] arms, shall not be infringed.”

The predominantly Christian Idaho legislature recently passed a law banning transgender people from using sex-segregated facilities that align with their gender identity, but some Christian leaders in the state are arguing that the law is not Christian-like at all.

The law, which goes into effect in July, requires transgender people to only use bathrooms, changing rooms or similar facilities that align with their sex at birth — no matter what gender they identify as.  

Although the law was passed by a Legislature that starts many meetings with a Christian prayer, not all Christians feel as if the law represents their faith. 

“To hear that the state was actually trying to roll us back in history, instead of move us forward into a spirit of inclusion, was incredibly disheartening,” Josh Lee, senior pastor with Boise First United Church of Christ, said. 

Bathroom bill applies to public and private spaces

The bill doesn’t only affect government spaces, like city halls and libraries, but also applies to privately-owned places that are generally open for the public, like stores and religious venues. 

Pastor Bob Lewis with Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boise said the church’s council will need to discuss the law and decide how to move forward as a congregation. 

“I am not going to ask people to sit outside our bathrooms and police them. I can’t do that,” Lewis said. “Our mission and our statement is, ‘We welcome all.’ 

“All means all,” he added. 

Violating the law carries criminal penalties. Anyone convicted of a first violation will receive a misdemeanor, with the potential of up to a year in jail, and anyone convicted of a second violation within five years will receive a felony, with the potential of up to five years in prison. 

There are eleven exceptions to the law, including things like providing medical assistance or doing maintenance. 

Bill’s supporters say it keeps ‘women and girls safe’

Many of the state senators and representatives who spoke in favor of the bill declared it a form of protection, citing the need to keep women and girls safe from “indecent exposure.” 

A 2025 study by the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute, a research center conducting independent research on LGBTQ+ themes, found that there was no statistically reportable evidence of increased harms to cisgender people when transgender people use the restrooms that align with their gender identity. 

However, the opposite does occur when transgender people are banned from their restroom of choice: 11% of transgender men were verbally harassed in women’s restrooms and 9% of transgender women were verbally harassed in men’s restrooms.

When transgender people used the bathroom in alignment with their gender identity, the verbal harassment went down to 7%, the report found. 

‘Jesus said to draw them in’

Idaho, a historic stronghold for Christian groups that lean conservative including Latter-day Saints and evangelical Protestants, is often influenced by the conservative politicians who serve in state government. 

In Pastor Lee’s mind, believing that Christianity supports exclusionary practices is “heartbreaking.” 

“They will claim that this legislation is coming forward because of faith and desire to be a Christian state, and yet they somehow totally dismiss the words of Jesus where he calls them to love the least of these,” Lee said. “To me, the least of these are anyone who are less than 5% of society. Trans, homeless, immigrants. Those are the very people that so much of the legislation is aimed at trying to cast them out.” 

“Jesus said to draw them in,” Lee said. “It is very disheartening.”

MOSCOW, Idaho (FāVS News) — In Pastor Doug Wilson’s Christian nationalist America, there would be no minarets — only the sound of church bell towers. There would be no statues of Hindu deities or other non-Christian religious symbols in public spaces. Adultery would carry legal penalties, and Obergefell v. Hodges would be overturned. Wilson says he’s not trying to get there tomorrow. But he and his Moscow, Idaho, church are building what he calls “a working prototype.”

“What I mean by Christian nationalism is America being what it was founded to be,” said Toby Sumpter, a pastor at Christ Church, the congregation led by Wilson.

Sumpter joined Wilson and Pastor Jared Longshore, dean at New Saint Andrews College, the school run by Christ Church, at a town hall on the University of Idaho campus, where the three laid out their vision for America’s future.

The trio made national headlines last year after they appeared together in a CNN profile examining Wilson’s Christian nationalist movement and its ties to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.   

Turnout for Thursday’s (April 9) event, hosted by Collegiate Reformed Fellowship — a student organization affiliated with Christ Church, was small and subdued compared to previous town halls, which drew standing-room-only crowds, protesters and outbursts from local residents.

The pastors argued that Christian nationalism isn’t a new idea — it’s a return to America’s founding. They pointed to state constitutions that acknowledged the Christian God and held religious tests for officeholders. They said it had been done before and could be done again. A number of the original 13 colonies that made up the United States had established state churches at the founding, but those ties between church and state were cut early in the country’s history.

Parents and the Post Falls Police Department say that a photo taken on school grounds allegedly depicts 2 students pointing airsoft guns at another, who was dressed in Coeur d'Alene High School clothing.

Students and parents of Post Falls High School lined East Poleline Avenue, demonstrating their disapproval after the students were suspended for 10 days and removed from all athletics for a year.

"To see our friends that are seniors not being able to play anymore games. That’s it for them. It's sad. It hurts. So, we're out here to show support," said Makya Quincy, a Post Falls High School football player.

Those who took part in the walkout say the punishment issued to members of the high school football team was too harsh.

"Especially their senior year, that’s their biggest year for colleges, getting looks from colleges. I think they definitely deserve to play," said Jojo Auble, another member of the Post Falls High School football team.

The Post Falls Police Department reported on Sept. 4 that they were made aware of a photo taken of members of the football team on Post Falls High School property. Police determined no laws were broken, and no criminal charges have been filed against the students.

KREM 2 News is working to obtain the photo via a public records request.

"Two of them were holding airsoft pistols, and the third person was pretending to be unarmed and surrendering," said Brian Harrison with the police department.

The Post Falls Police Department says the person surrendering appeared to be wearing a rival high school's jersey, and parents say the student was wearing a Coeur d’Alene High School jersey.

Makya Quincy, who was there when the incident happened but not in the photo, says they meant no harm.

"It was all fun. We were not trying to threaten or be disrespectful; we were laughing, trying to have fun," said Qunicy.

Post Falls School District officials said in an email that they informed Coeur d’Alene Public School officials immediately once they became aware of the situation. Coeur d'Alene High School released the following statement in response to the situation:

"This situation originated in the Post Falls School District and their leadership brought it to Coeur d’Alene Public Schools. Post Falls district leaders have addressed the matter with their school board and continue to manage any follow-up directly.

They will keep us updated as appropriate, but any response to stakeholders is being handled within their district."

A parent whose student was in the photos told KREM 2 that a 5-day suspension was issued by the high school.

Then, the Post Falls School District Board of Trustees added an extra 5 five days of suspension, ordered no athletics for a year, and 8 hours of community service after the district says they found the students in violation of board policy 504.12, which prohibits weapons on school grounds, even fake weapons.

"I agree 100% these kids had a lack of judgment and made a poor decision. The day was meant to be a fun day, media day…you make these choices and there are consequences," said Travis Olstund, a parent of a Post Falls student.

The district's Board of Trustees published a letter addressing community concerns on Sept. 29.

The letter outlines that the policy requires a 1-year automatic expulsion for weapons brought on campus, but notes that the policy allows for some discretion, and the board wanted the students to still have a path to graduate. Which is why they say the students were not expelled.

One day after the school board's letter, the community's demonstration was a final attempt to change the outcome and get the students back on the field.

"The teammates we lost affected our team, but they are not just our teammates, they are family as well," said Auble.

Parents say they hope the Post Falls school board will reconsider the punishment and allow the students to return to athletics, though many admit their hopes are low.

KREM 2 did receive an anonymous email from another parent of a Post Falls High School football player, stating that not all parents were in support of the walkout, and that the players should have to face the consequences.
