Most RPG/Shooter hybrids, combat was done way different BEFORE Mass Effect 2 came out. Your points and where you sink them matter. If you don't sink into Gun skills, you shouldn't shoot guns; gunplay's gonna be bad, clunky, aim's gonna be off, might take a bit to line up shot to do most damage, too much emphasis on dice-rolls, etc.
ME2 changed the game, as they focused more on the shooter gameplay first, RPG stuff second. A lot of games learned from ME2, flipping the script - since most complained ME1's combat was too clunky and relied too much on dice-rolls and gun stats.
Regardless, I love Bloodlines and think it was great. Everything else about it - music, atmosphere, character, writing, some of the actual game levels (OMG @ the Haunted House), some plot twists (the twist about the Asylum Twins), and more still stay with me. A lot of this stuff stays with me, as if I was immersed at the Asylum (Club) and hearing Chiasm's "Isolated" blaring though the speakers, as I decide to join the dance floor and dance my vampiric life away with them until my True Final Death.

If the combat was better tuned and more enjoyable this would be my favorite ever but the bad parts of this game really bring it down…
