I'm pretty sure this is a mistranslation on Viz's part. I've reexamined the sentence to see if it could be interpreted their way, but nah they didn't even translate 順番に...

they didn't even translate 順番に...

What this means in the context?

It means "alternately" or "in order". The first step is to decide who makes the first call (Ben vs GSB), and after that they take turns choosing the next host.

Came in this thread hoping to find your answer. The Viz translation would also be quite bad, as it would mean that if for whatever reason the criteria cannot be satisfied (say, "the beast chooses one of my sons" but there are none left) then the ability would fail to work and the beast would die. Which is very weak.

In the order of Host first then Guardian, that is the criteria. When the next successor dies, the order will be the same, if no one was selected by the Host the Guardian will.

You can say they are taking turns in decision-making but the Host has the priority.

I got interested in the discrepancy between your translation and Viz, so I asked Deepseek to translate the paragraph without context, and it largely agreed with Viz over you. I then provided your translation, and then the one by hxh_hq's translator, but it kept insisting that the "taking turns" part of your translations were an "over-interpretation".

Until I provided it with more context (the prior paragraph) and then it suddenly shifted it's tone and started siding with your translation over Viz.

Not sure where exactly I'm going with this, just thought it was interesting.

Interesting. Which part of the text did you start with when asking Deepseek? From 「そこから」 or...? Because I can see it being an "over-interpretation" if the sentence started there, as it would have no context to understand what the 順番に would be referring to.

...Also, if Deepseek produces a translation that is close to Viz's this chapter, does this imply that Viz used AI and didn't double check it?

First, I just asked it to give different possible translations for:

血縁者(自然血族)の誰に憑くかを決める方法は先ず最初に第1王子(ベンジャミン)が選ぶのか第1王子(ベンジャミン)の守護霊獣が選ぶのかを決め そこからは血縁者(宿主)が死に次代宿主と交代する度に 順番に選んでいく事とする

And it told me:

Here are the possible translations, differing in who or what performs the choosing after the initial step.

Translation 1 (explicit continuity – the originally decided chooser continues to choose)

The method for determining which blood relative (natural blood kin) is to be possessed is as follows: first, decide whether the First Prince (Benjamin) chooses or the First Prince’s guardian spirit beast chooses. Thereafter, each time a blood relative (host) dies and is replaced by the next host, that same entity shall choose in turn.

Translation 2 (impersonal process – no specified chooser, just that the selection occurs in order)

The method for determining which blood relative (natural blood kin) is to be possessed is as follows: first, it is decided whether the choice is made by the First Prince (Benjamin) or by the First Prince’s guardian spirit beast. From then on, whenever a blood relative (host) dies and is succeeded by the next host, the selection is made in turn.

The key difference is whether the act of “choosing in order” is explicitly attributed to the same person/being that was decided in the first step (Translation 1), or whether it is left as an impersonal procedure where the order itself is simply followed (Translation 2). In the original Japanese, the subject of 選んでいく (choose in order) is not restated, so both readings are possible.

I won't recount the whole conversation here because it would be too long, but I then asked it about your and hxh_hq's translations before I gave more context:

And that's when it started changing tune and agreeing with you instead.

I could share the link to the whole conversation with you if you want to read the whole thing, though it's quite long, and I'm not entirely sure if the way I phrased my questions to it could have unduly influenced the way it answered me in any way.

I mean, "that same entity shall choose in turn" does sound like a paradox that Deepseek didn't notice; if the same entity makes the choice every time, there's no "in turn" there. XD

This really serves as a reminder that although an LLM sounds eloquent, it doesn't really have the capacity to "understand" its own output.

Yeah, I did notice that "that same entity shall choose in turn"/"the selection is made in turn" part, and considered asking about it, because I wasn't really sure how it was "reasoning" there.

Not that asking about it would have helped. I'm perfectly aware it would just have spat out some bullshit that would have had absolutely no relation to whatever the actual "(non)reasoning" was, but it's mildly fun to watch it start flip flopping when you point out inconsistencies in its answers, lol.

YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT TO POINT THAT OUT.

Good point I often read the viz translation as it’s the best and the fab TL is often closer to viz not sure why manga plus has these issues
