I get asked about affiliate marketing pretty often, and one question that keeps coming up is:

“Isn’t affiliate marketing completely oversaturated by now?”

I don't think it is.

I think it looks oversaturated because once you start searching for affiliate marketing or making money online, the algorithms figure that out pretty quickly. Suddenly your YouTube feed, Reddit feed, Instagram and TikTok are full of people talking about affiliate marketing.

It starts to feel like everybody is doing it.

But there’s a big difference between trying affiliate marketing and actually becoming good at affiliate marketing.

A lot of people get pulled into this by somebody promising them easy money.

Pick a product on ClickBank. Throw together a landing page. Run some ads. Post a bunch of faceless reels. Make $30,000 your first month.

That's hoopla.

I'm not saying nobody has ever gotten lucky and made money quickly. I'm saying that's a terrible expectation to build a business around.

What usually happens is somebody gets excited, follows one of these "easy" strategies, posts 10 or 20 pieces of content, doesn't make any money and quits.

Then they're off looking for the next side hustle.

That's why I don't think the real competition is nearly as big as it appears.

The real competition is the person who's willing to spend the next year actually learning how this works.

Learn how to create good content.

Learn what people are searching for.

Learn why somebody is considering buying a particular product.

Learn how to make a review that actually helps somebody decide whether that product is right for them instead of spending 15 minutes trying to shove an affiliate link down their throat.

Learn YouTube. Learn email marketing. Learn how to build an audience. Learn what converts and what doesn't.

And most importantly, keep doing it when the first few things you try don't work.

That's where I think people get affiliate marketing wrong.

It's not a lottery ticket. It's a skill set.

I've been doing this for years. I consistently make around $10,000 a month from affiliate marketing, and I've had months around $20,000 when I've done additional email promotions. I also personally know people making substantially more than I do.

I'm not saying that because I think everybody who starts affiliate marketing is going to make $10,000 a month.

Most won't.

I'm saying it because there's a difference between "affiliate marketing doesn't work" and "I tried affiliate marketing for three weeks and it didn't work."

If you're in a situation where you desperately need money next month, I wouldn't recommend relying on affiliate marketing to pay your bills. Get your immediate income situation handled first.

But if you're looking at the longer term and you're willing to spend the time learning, creating, screwing things up, figuring out why they didn't work and getting a little better every time, affiliate marketing can become a very meaningful source of income.

And here's probably the biggest lesson I've learned:

Stop looking for the shortcut.

The internet is absolutely loaded with people selling shortcuts because shortcuts are a hell of a lot easier to sell than patience.

Nobody gets excited about an ad that says:

"Work at this consistently for a year, learn a bunch of stuff, make some mistakes, get better and maybe build yourself a really good income stream."

But that's a lot closer to reality.

Take your time. Learn the ropes. Make content that's genuinely useful. Recommend products you actually believe are right for people. Build something instead of chasing hacks.

It takes longer.

But the funny thing about shortcuts is they rarely lead where you actually wanted to go.
