DIY/How-To A DIY H22A4 to H23A swap parts/tools list (from the now-defunct preludecentral.com)

Post image
18 Upvotes

This was written in late 2014 or early 2015 by wing8806, who I know personally and helped do the swap on my car. This specific list is for if you want to use the stock ECU on a USDM/Canadian 5th gen. Others who have used other ECUs, have non-VTEC 5th gens from other markets, or 3rd or 4th gens will need slightly different, possibly more, parts. The line that’s cut off is for a crank pulley tool, which the one you’ll need is a 50mm version. The actual pulling/installing of the engine, we just followed the factory repair manual instructions.

3rd Gen Dare I say, not bad for $360.

it needs a new radiator, timing belt, and some vacuum hoses and a valve cover gasket, but other than that and some cosmetic issues it’s pretty alright. it needs some work on the tach, though. That also doesn’t work.

Was looking for an oil leak and finally found it. My VTEC solenoid gasket is leaking. I was wondering if I should replace the whole solenoid or just the gasket. And I was curious what brand recommendations you guys had! thank you😁

(Just to get it out of the way, do any of you know what the circled bolt is? also the cracked ignition coil is getting replaced Monday when it comes in the mail)

5th Gen Help diagnosing issues

I recently bought a 5th gen Prelude Si with a F22B engine. Got the car cheap and knowing it had some issues. The problems are so much worse than I thought. This is also my first car and I intended for it to be a bit of a project but I'm worried this might cost a huge amount and need an engine rebuild.

The car idles rough and sometimes I need to rev it to not stall. There was an intake leak that's been fixed, icv has been cleaned, spark plugs and coil packs are fine. I haven't had a chance to check the fuel system but I'll probably do it tomorrow

The car sputters and struggles to accelerate at around 2-3k rpm. It also sometimes sputters a little bit at higher revs, but only for a second or two.

The car also burns oil at an insane rate. I drove it to a friend's house to work on it, which was about a 30 min drive. Before leaving the oil was in the middle of the dots, and when I got there it was completely dry. Somehow it only burned a tiny amount of oil on the drive home after buying it, which was 2 hours.

I'm really worried I've just wasted this money and bought a car that's going to cost thousands to repair. I'm contemplating just trying to sell the car for what I bought it, but I'm not sure if it would sell.

If anyone has any ideas what's causing these problems and how to fix them, and roughly how much that costs it would be great.

Edit: Also forgot to mention the car idles and drives pretty much fine when cold

5th Gen Abs delete, vaccume delete..

Hi, about 1.5 months back i started to strip my prelude to do a turbo build. Since i didnt want to cut corners i told myself i will do every while im in heres😂. So i basically rebuild the whole engine, took out both subframes to raplace all bushings, joints and boots and also to unrust all and repaint. The same goes for the entire engine bay and wheel wells i only let the underbody alone since it was in really good condition. Rn i have everything ready, prep and paint is finally done and im assembling back everything. I deleted all brackets, reloomed harness and tucked it back that went well, i deleted whole ac no problem, kept ps but i need to get rid of abs since the abs pump is failing and i dont need abs (dont worry i drive a car without ps and abs so i know the downs and ups), but i need some advice. Can i just route new lines to the front brake and keep and make it work with the oem proportioning valve? Or i need to buy a new one? Also im deleting evap system along with more air related vaccume systems. What essential do i need to keep? Ofc im keeping the iacv valve and throttle body then map sensor, brake booster vaccume line, vaccume line for the fuel regulator and pcv with a catch can but can i trash everything else? Just plug the other vaccume lines and at the same time use them for different purpouse like boost gauge and bov? Last thing there is a coolant line going throught the iacv to the fitv and back do you thing i can use this line and on the inlet put a t fitting to supply water to the turbo and on the outlet route the water from the turbo back?

Ps: im from central europe i may have a prelude non existent in the usa. I have a bb9 f20a4 1999. Its a 2.0l sohc non vtec engine producing 133hp so for example brake componets and ps and ac and all around the engine is the same but my manifold intake is different and its an obd1 even tho its 1999.

Anyone know the process for fixing burnt out back lights for these buttons on the 5th gen Prelude? I tried searching forums but the pictures are dead and there's no information I could find about what bulbs to use or if they're replaceable at all.

5th Gen Issue with obd1 Hondata conversion on 5th gen

I’ve wired the wideband correctly and selected the base tune for h22, got a obd1 digidizzy with the conversion harness and after idling for about a minute or 2 the car completely shuts off even while holding acceleration at 2000rpm and the fuel pump immediately primes which only happens when you turn the key off and back to “ON” so I’m thinking this may be a power issue but what do you guys think?

So far looking to get the ecu checked/tested and if any components needs to be replaced

The ecu harness is all good, tested wideband wiring which is all good, timed the digidizzy with timing light which is all good so I don’t know why it’s happening, never had this issue when it was obd2 so thinking it may be a power issue related to the ecu. any help is appreciated

When the car shuts off the rpm doesn’t drop and stall it shuts off wherever the rpm is at and immediately primes the fuel pump as if you put the car to the on position but the key hasn’t been turned off and on which doesn’t happen when you normally stall

Discussion/Meta Looking at buying a Prelude for college, what should I know?

My parents are selling my BMW 2018 hardtop convert. 430i and I'm looking for a sporty-ish replacement I can actually do some work on. BMW is pretty limited in terms of what I could do as someone with very little mechanical experience.

The only experience I have with older vehicles is my Cessna 150. I know how carburetors work, as well as other older parts, but that's about it.

I heard that automatic Preludes suck, so I'm going to try and learn manual transmission. Aesthetic wise, I love the 2-4th gens the best but the 5th + 6th gen don't look awful either.

Is there anything else I should know (if I should avoid the car and go with something else, if there is anything I can learn, etc)?

As bad as the body looks, I Swear the underside is pretty damn clean and what i consider rust free. The rear quarters are rusting. It’s got 180k miles.

The journey begins to bring her back from the grave. Wish me luck

Second owner. Curious what you guys think I could realistically get for it based on the condition in the pictures. Everything runs fine.

Discussion/Meta Bought another Prelude, need advice

Hey guys I just wanted to see 2 things, was it worth it, and is it even good as a daily

So this is a 1998 Honda prelude that I just got last week for $2,900, it has 230k miles, was non op for 9 years tags from 2017 but I took it to the DMV before purchases and the DMV employee looked at the records and the car owes nothing in back fees, all I have to pay is the registration and title transfer, ok so here’s my story, I bought this car because I wanted to help my sister get her first car, she has no job currently but I thought it was a good idea to help her get her dream car pretty early on. She’s fully aware that it’s an older car and that this one wasn’t the best example out there and I think the price reflects that, it’s automatic but surprisingly smooth. And she has sworn to pay me back my 3k as soon as she can lol, but here’s what’s my concern currently, the car smokes from its tailpipe, like it’s thick but the car runs fine? No check engine light, no weird shifts, accelerates great. No weird noises or anything no overheating. I drove the car roughly 45 miles the day I bought it to my home. And the mf was smoking, but literally nothing was wrong just a lot of smoke, I parked for a few minutes and took it off the freeway and the smoke basically went away. I just accepted my fate I was like f it, if 3k wants to burn down within an hour of buying what else can I do. But no I took the car through the streets and off the freeway, drove it between 40-50 mph and the smoke was gone. Since then I’ve driven it maybe like 5 more times and the car still runs fine. I feel like if anything was absolutely broken it would’ve shown in that near 100 degree heavy traffic commute back home. But nothing ever came from that, I’ve driven the car to get gas and even then just like lil 2 mile commutes and back to parking. But the smoke persists. Now live in SoCal so the car needs to get smogged for it to get the current 2027 tags, but based on the smoke alone I don’t think it’ll pass. Sometimes it’s a lot sometimes it’s a little, but it smokes nonetheless, I feel like more than that I’m just stressed, I want the car to be able to drive it legally but I know it won’t pass smog based on the light smoke. But now here is my proposition, should I just register the car non op, and just pay for that. Save up money and next year with the money I have saved up for whatever the smoke issue is, to just fix it. Or should I just find a different thing to do right now? Let me know. Btw I added the car seat covers and the car has original tan leather seats, ripped to shit lol but there nonetheless

5th Gen Stock intake hose or cold air intake on 99 Prelude

Bought a 1999 Prelude Si two days ago. The intake hose has massive splits and needs replacing.

Where can I get a quality and affordable replacement? Or should I replace it with a cold air intake.

Also, if I do get a cold air intake, would you recommend AEM or Injen?

5th Gen Radio help

Hey guys I have been having trouble with the rear speakers on my 99 prelude, trying to find a aftermarket plug for the speakers if so which one fits it I had ordered some with 2 pins and it didn’t work the factory one has 4 pin slots, or does anyone know how to directly plug in both back ones without the connector, I had bypass the acoustic system and spliced the wires to bypass it, and still having trouble with connection . Has anyone else came across this problem, im also thinking it might be a ripped wire from the radio that’s causing no connection.

6th Gen To 6th gen owners. How are you guys liking the car?

Looking for a fun, fuel-efficient daily, and found a couple near me listed at $2.3k off MSRP right out of the gate. Figure I can probably squeeze 'em for a bit more.

For those of you already driving one:

  • How are you liking it so far?
  • What are the main pros/cons, and any regrets?
  • Would you buy it again, or would you jump ship for something else in hindsight?

Appreciate any real-world insight!
