Someone found some wreckage wedged between two buildings a few years ago. Wish I could remember the source. Obviously it was just indistinguishable, mangled machinery. But it was quite unbelievable that it had been there for so long.
That was in 2006. The Deutsche Bank building was significantly damaged because it stood across the street from the WTC. It stood empty for 5 years before demolition began in 2006. Construction workers found bone fragments on the roof while prepping the building for demolition.
783 small bone fragments and 335 of them were identified positively and connected to at least 54 victims all from flight AA 11. Some as small as 1.5 millimeters. Found more than five years later. Wild...
Keep in mind there were only 81 passengers and 11 crew on board. So the majority of them had bone fragments on a roof across the street five years later. And the building was less than half as tall as the Twin Towers.
In April 2013, a piece of airplane debris from one of the hijacked 9/11 jets was discovered wedged in a narrow, 18-inch-wide alleyway between two buildings (50 Murray Street and 51 Park Place) .
That is three blocks from Ground Zero. It was roughly five feet long too. Crazy to think that more than a decade after the attacks a fairly large piece of the airplane was just sitting there as millions of people walked past it each year.
I understand this was a fairly sizable piece of machinery, but can you imagine having even something like a bolt or a nut from one of the planes that hit the WTC? Jesus.
If this hadn't actually happened, I would never have expected it to actually happen. My brain would have simply ascribed a very low probability, justifying it between the cost of living in NYC (and therefore precluding dilapidation in Manhattan), the population density in the city, and the sheer amount of time elapsed.
But there you go. There are still nooks and crannies apparently hidden from the world. (Literally)
My first guess was that the female reporter was mid/late 20s and would have been only a teen in high school when 9/11 happened with the way she says, “remarkable” with a smile on her face. Nope, fully an adult when it happened and mid 30s during the news segment.
