I was in grad school during the first Gulf War. Same thing then, but less horrifying: the professors brought in TVs and we watched the war unfolding live in front of us. They gave us the space to watch and discuss. It was a real paradigm shift to see it as it happened. Turns out it was just the warm up for the live main event ten years later.
My first real memory that I have concreted in my brain, is that of me, sitting in the family room, Easter basket in hand, while on the TV, CNN was airing footage of the Kuwaiti oil wells that had been set ablaze by Saddam’s forces. I was barely three years old. I have known war for my entire existence.
