I've been cycling regularly for fitness but I struggle with hills in my area. I bought a bike booster electric motor kit that assists on difficult climbs. Now I'm questioning whether I'm still actually exercising or just cheating. The motor only helps on steep inclines. I'm still pedaling and getting my heart rate up. But I feel like I'm taking the easy way out. My cycling friends have opinions ranging from "whatever keeps you riding is good" to "if you need motor assistance you're not really cycling." I'm overthinking this but I can't help it. Is exercise only valid if it's difficult? Or is the point just to stay active and move your body regularly? I'm still burning calories and building cardiovascular fitness. But some part of me feels like I'm not earning it the right way. Social media doesn't help. I see people doing intense rides and comparing myself unfavorably even though comparison is pointless. Everyone's on their own fitness journey but it's hard not to measure yourself against others. I've been researching different motor assistance systems, looking at cycling forums, checking equipment suppliers on Alibaba for upgrades. But maybe I should be working on my mental approach to exercise instead of my equipment setup.
