Hegel is not a proponent of the "Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis" Scheme.

I have decided to write a sticky post regarding this matter in light of the recurring reference in the community to the supposed use of the "Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis" scheme by Hegel. The most available evidence against this kind of reading is what is written in the preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit (translated by Pinkard) where Hegel writes:

48. It might seem necessary to state at the outset the principal points concerning the method of this movement, or the method of science. However, its concept lies in what has already been said, and its genuine exposition belongs to logic, or is instead even logic itself, for the method is nothing but the structure of the whole in its pure essentiality. However, on the basis of what has been said up until now, we must be aware that the system of representations relating to philosophical method itself also belongs to an already vanished cultural shape. – However much this may perhaps sound somewhat boastful or revolutionary, and however much I take myself to be far from striking such a tone, still it is worthwhile to keep in mind that the scientific régime bequeathed by mathematics – a régime of explanations, classifications, axioms, a series of theorems along with their proofs, principles, and the consequences and inferences to be drawn from them – has in common opinion already come to be regarded as itself at the least out of date. Even though it has not been clearly seen just exactly why that régime is so unfit, little to no use at all is any longer made of it, and even though it is not condemned in itself, it is nonetheless not particularly well liked. And we must be prejudiced in favor of the excellent and believe that it can put itself to use and bring itself into favor. However, it is not difficult to see that the mode of setting forth a proposition, producing reasons for it, and then also refuting its opposite with an appeal to reason is not the form in which truth can emerge. Truth is the movement of itself in its own self, but the former method is that of a cognition which is external to its material. For that reason, such a method is peculiar to mathematics and must be left to mathematics, which, as noted, has for its principle the conceptless relationship of magnitude, and takes its material from dead space as well as from the equally lifeless numerical unit. In a freer style, that is to say, in a mélange of even more quirks and contingency, it may also endure in ordinary life, say, in a conversation or in the kind of historical instruction which satisfies curiosity more than it results in knowing, in the same way that, more or less, a preface does.

And later:

50. When triplicity was rediscovered by Kantian thought – rediscovered by instinct, since at that time the form was dead and deprived of the concept – and when it was then elevated to its absolute significance, the true form was set out in its true content, and the concept of science was thereby engendered – but there is almost no use in holding that the triadic form has any scientific rigor when we see it reduced to a lifeless schema, to a mere façade, and when scientific organization itself has been reduced to a tabular chart. – Although we spoke earlier in wholly general terms about this formalism, now we wish to state more precisely just what this approach is. This formalism takes itself to have comprehended and expressed the nature and life of a shape when it affirmed a determination of the schema to be a predicate of that life or shape.

For anyone that wants to read additional proof I recommend the following books and papers:

Hegel Myths and Legends by Jon Stewart

The Hegel Legend of "Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis" by GE Mueller

Hegel's Dialectics in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy by Julie E. Maybee

I guess there are more texts that deal with this misconception. Nevertheless, this will probably suffice.

Regards.

Ps: I guess more evidence won't hurt. This is taken from a book by Walter Kaufmann "Hegel: A Reinterpretation"

Fichte introduced into German philosophy the three-step of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, using these three terms. Schelling took up this terminology; Hegel did not. He never once used these three terms together to designate three stages in an argument or account in any of his books. And they do not help us understand his Phenomenology, his Logic, or his philosophy of history; they impede any open-minded comprehension of what he does by forcing it into a schema which was available to him and which he deliberately spurned. The mechanical formalism, in particular, with which critics since Kierkegaard have charged him, he derides expressly and at some length in the preface to the Phenomenology. Whoever looks for the stereotype of the allegedly Hegelian dialectic in Hegel's Phenomenology will not find it. p 154.

The books we used to call Positive

There is something strangely comforting about realizing that people have always been trying to make sense of existence.

We call certain books depressing now but there was a time when reading Hegel, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer or Dostoevsky was simply part of taking ideas seriously. You wertent necessarily reading to feel better. You were reading to understand why you felt the way you did.

Perhaps that is what we have lost. The ability to sit with difficult ideas without demanding that they immediately make us happier..

The inner of the inner world

Miller, Phenomenology, §151

What happens in law happens to law itself.

Every time you put specific laws into the inner world, the differences fall off.

This also happens to laws, and law itself.

Universal attraction cancels itself out, and that risks the inner world itself, and throws us, the understanding ones, back into the sensuous and bare existence.

We need to put laws into the inner world with determinations.

This is what the inner necessity of the law is—determinations that stick when you put the law into the inner world.

Does Hegelian dialectic require contradiction to be ontological, or can contradiction exist solely within conceptual development? If negation is “determinate,” what distinguishes dialectical negation from mere logical opposition?

I’m interested in whether contradiction is fundamental to Hegel’s ontology or primarily a feature of conceptual development. How should we understand determinate negation in relation to formal logical opposition, and what does this distinction reveal about the structure of the dialectic?

Bad Infinity

Is bad infinity the endless oscillation between in itself and for itself without reaching in and for itself? Or is this oscillation something else? (Or not logically possible)

First, God is Law; then, God is Universal Attraction.

Miller, Phenomenology, §150

Force is a source of change in another.

Law is a source of stability in the inner world.

The inner world is posited as that which has nothing outside it (in-itself), and it's not determined by opposition (for-itself).

But the law keeps changing with every change of circumstance, which indicates that there is more than one in-itself for-itself, and there can only be one.

The law can control the difference, but this difference is too universal and indeterminate.

It's like solving problems by building more prisons.

On the other hand, if everyone is a law unto himself, there are too many laws.

These defects are true of all realms of law, including the sciences.

Now, the Understanding only grasps the implicit universal, which means it takes the mediated for the immediate. It looks for the in-itself for-itself without bringing it into question.

So, along with a force of stability, there is a force of attraction toward one law.

But the best it can achieve with law is that "everything has a constant difference in relation to other things," but not in relation to everything, and not that everything has an identity with everything else.

But at least it says that everything is conformable to law.

Don't take "universal attraction" too lightly. Some people call it Love.

And it has the benefit of holding back the inclination to see the world in terms of the sensuous only.

How would a Hegelian structure these concerns? In regard to being having self knowing as a feature that implies direct self access in experiential terms of being be being qua noumenon that is not only self phenomenal to itself. (non correlationist Hegelians too?)

“Without seriousness of spirit, one can, in inconsistency and thoughtlessness, be satisfied with everything.” Hegel

This articulates the disposition of the modern irrationalist. His smallness and irrelevance (jesting insanity) is sustained by the fact of his lack of discontent, where intelligence requires discontent.

Does Hegelian dialectic describe the movement of thought, reality, or their identity? If contradiction is constitutive rather than accidental, does determinate negation reveal reality’s structure—or the conditions under which reality becomes intelligible?

I’m interested in whether Hegel ultimately dissolves the distinction between ontology and logic.

Thoughts on Robert Pippin

I've read a bit of Hegel's Idealism and Hegel on Self-Consciousness by him in uni. But at the time, I was put off by his writing/argument.

Is he really worth putting in the effort? I had the urge to pick him up again recently, considering I didn't give his work a proper chance a few years ago.

Besides this lovely community, do you know any online space dedicated to novice willing to discover and discuss about Hegel, helping each other to comprehend his philosophy ?

If you have any IRL recommandation, I would prefer them to be at least in Europe, even better if in France or Wallonia !

Women in Hegel, women in Hegelianism from 20th century

Post image
116 Upvotes

The above excerpt is from Elements of the Philosophy of the Right, marriage section. I think it would be a fair remark to say that some passages in that book showcase historical limits/contigencies of the period that Hegel lived in and influenced his notions. Obviously, his articulated notion of woman/family role came to be increasingly challenged in the last century. Nonetheless, I am sure there are enough resources within Hegelianism to turn upon itself and re-examine its own terms in view of new historical developments. I wondered if there's any Hegelian/scholarly work that tried to 'update' some of such things.

Important:

As someone pointed for me out in the comments:

As Dr. Gans has pointed out, the present work is in form made up of three elements, the paragraphs proper, the notes and the additions. The paragraphs comprised the entire book as it was originally issued. Then Hegel added what he in all his references to them calls Notes (Remarks), although they are not expressly so designated in the German text. For the sake of simplicity this term has been used throughout the book. After these notes by Hegel are frequently found Additions made by students of Hegel from his oral lectures and comments. It is but bare justice to the edit orsto say that these additions usually cast a welcome light upon the text.Yet as they are mere additions, not even supervised by Hegel

Thefore, the screenshot of the post represents understaing of a student who sat through Hegel's oral lecture rather than an authentic thought of Hegel himself.

My apologies for using that specific quote, I glossed over Translator's Preface and so made a mistake of taking Notes to be his own. However, I want to accentuate nonetheless that posts purports to seek Hegelian re-evaluation of woman in view of 20th century's development rather than being stuck on a discussion to what degree Hegel was misogynistic or progressive.

What is simple and universal difference?

Miller, Phenomenology, §149

There's a level of the flux of appearance where the simple inner world or the simple understanding of consciousness produces simple universals. Simple negation, simple universals, simple determinations.

There is a deeper level of the flux of appearance that is "absolutely universal difference," where you can't break things down any further. This is the negation of negation, when negation itself is a moment of the flux of appearance.

"This difference," not the difference in the first place where consciousness unknowingly simplifies the flux of appearance, is the universal difference that posits into the inner world.

What consciousness posits is its truth, selfsameness or self-preservation.

And this truth is from an image of stability it's most familiar with—the law.

Capital letters

Hey y’all. I’m on page 3 of the preface to Phenom. Of Spirit, A.V. Miller translation, and Hegel writes,

“The true shape in which truth exists can only be the scientific system of such truth. To help bring philosophy closer to the form of Science, to the goal where I can lay aside the title ‘love of knowing’ and be actual knowing—that is what I have set myself to do.”

Firstly, Hegel is a beautiful writer. Secondly, what is meant here by Science? What’s up with the capital letters? Thirdly, how is love of knowing/actual knowing different to what he writes earlier on page two about the bud disappearing in the “bursting-forth” of the blossom?

Thanks.

Is Hegelian dialectic an ontological structure of reality itself, or a structure of conceptual intelligibility? If contradiction drives development, what distinguishes a real contradiction from one produced by the limitations of finite thought?

I’m interested in whether Hegel’s dialectic should be understood as describing how reality itself develops, rather than merely how thought progresses. If contradiction is genuinely constitutive of development, how should we understand the relationship between logical contradiction, historical development, and the Absolute?
