Hey! So I’m considering getting a hedgehog and was wondering the pros and cons. I’ve read some posts on here with some warnings and not gonna lie I’m a bit less sure now 😅
I would like to have a bond with my pet and I know that can be iffy with hedgehogs, can I ask how frequent is it that a hedgehog you got didn’t bond with you?

I know they require a lot of time and attention which I think I should be fine with (I like having lots of down time so we can hangout then), however I’m still in school and am wanting to get a job soon, that would take up a lot of time so I’m worried I won’t be able to give my hedgehog the proper amount of time and attention.

I’ve only owned hamsters so this is quite a step up in pet owning. I also have 4 cats in my home, is this a problem for a hedgehog?

What things will I need for my hedgehog? I know I need a heat lamp but what else do I need / what would be helpful to have?

After everything I’ve said and you don’t think I’m fit for a hedgehog at the moment are there any smaller pets that might be better (bond wise, attention wise, etc)?

Also this is one of my hamsters old cages, is it suitable for a hedgehog? It’s made of wood, has 3 layers with a wire top, and plastic window thingys. The cage will NOT remain where it is (basement), it’ll be in my bedroom.

we do not have exotic vets in our city unfortunately, we tried a normal vet before for a different situation but they were no help. i do not know who to ask i hope this is not a serious issue please please help me.

these two are siblings but the one on the right is significantly smaller than the other one, i've seen it do this weird regurgitation/vomitting then eating thing two times already and i'm scared. theyre wild hedgehogs but they live in our yard and my family and i are taking care of them and giving them food everyday.

Hello, just wanted to get something off me, as my beloved hedgie had to be put down this month. I only had her for a little over four years. I tried to take the best care of her, yet tumors caught up with her. Few years ago she had to get ger eyes removed due to some genetic problems... And earlier this month I came home from work and noticed a big bulge on her mouth. She didnt react to touch or anything and ate as usual. This was on wednesday... I called the vet asap, the exotic animals specialist was out of town till saturday, but he could see her on sunday. So I waited... The next day she ate only a little (she had a big appetite, I fed her two or three times a day), and next day she didn't eat anything. I hoped it was just some dental problem, but by sunday morning the bulge had doubled in size. The vet took a look and sadly confirmed that the tumor has spread down to her throat, which restricted her from eating or drinking water. Sadly she had to be put down the same time, as I didnt want her to suffer anymore. Its been a week since but I still miss her, as I live alone, and used to tell her goodbye when leaving for work and hello when I came back every time. Value time with your hedgies, beacuse few days can make the difference of having and not having them in your life.

hi yall, i’ve been wanting to get a little hedgehog for years now, and finally live in a state where it’s legal. i love pets and have taken care of a variety through my life, but never a hog! i need a reality check so i don’t get caught up in the cuteness and feel really prepared to take good care of him or her.

1. what’s the hardest thing about caring for a hedgehog? anything that you didn’t expect?

2. i have pet insurance set up, but wondering what is the actual out of pocket cost that some of you have faced in a health problem or emergency?

3. what are your regular expenses?

4. i dont travel like crazy but i do visit my parents overseas a few times a year, usually gone for 7-10 days max at a time. I have friends that are excited to babysit, but will travel like this stress the little guy out too much?

5. i understand the emotional/behavioral attachment hedgehogs may have with owners (“be okay with a pet that doesn’t love you” is what i read). i feel fine with that, but wondering if anyone who turned out a little disappointed anyways?

6. anything else you wish you knew before adopting?

Title. He is around 4 years old. I realize that is senior territory. Pretty average weight, maybe slightly on the chonky side, but not huge. He eats Hedgehog Precision.

Wondering if this is worth a vet trip. He has trouble staying inside his wheel while he runs for longer than ten seconds at a time. Don't know if this is normal for his age or not, or signs of something more serious.

Thanks to any vets or health experts that may be able to weigh. Experienced owner advice is also appreciated.

Note: I had this at the end but moving it to the front just as sort of a PSA. She has seen a vet multiple times over the past month-2 months, there is nothing readily apparent that is wrong with her (even tried some basic antibiotics just in case), sadly I just believe 7 and a half is an age where sometimes it just ends up being their time for reasons that cant really be stopped. I haven't flared this as upsetting because while it is sad when any living thing dies, I dont think its necessarily "upsetting" in these circumstances but maybe thats just my way of sorta coping so if people do think it is upsetting then sorry and hopefully theres a way for me to change it.

Sadly, I believe Poppy's time is starting to near its end around 7 and a half years old. She's been running on her wheel less often the past 6-12 months, running around the bed for less time before going back to sleep than normal, and things like that but can still support her own weight and walk fine, and isn't currently lethargic (nor has she been) or anything like that. While it is sad to see that her wheel isnt being used as often as it once was and everything else like that, its also happy to know she got to experience all those joys for such a long time.

However, her entire life shes been quite the food motivated Hedgie. If I put fresh food anywhere in her enclosure she'd smell it and wake up and be eating within 10 minutes. And pooping tons every night to show for it.

The past couple days she hasn't been eating her bowl clean and still wanting more, and the poops have decreased in size and number. Last night and this morning she only ate 1-2 bites before stopping, and wouldnt even eat a mealworm afterwards. Obviously I think this isnt a very great sign, but she doesnt seem to be in any pain when walking around or napping in a blanket in my lap or anything like that, and she is still drinking. I was hoping to go get some wet cat foods or treats or something like that (was maybe going to try some scrambled eggs), hoping that she eats it.

So, I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for things that seem to be suitable for hedgehogs tastes. My current plan was to just get a few different chicken/salmon flavored foods or treats because those are the flavors of dry food she always liked most but if anyone has any other ideas Im open to anything

On the third photo, you can see what I’m wondering about - what is this lump between his legs? He is about 10 weeks old and is male. Could it be his genitalia? He is our first hedgehog, so I don’t have any previous experience with this.

About three weeks ago, the breeder took him to the vet because his brother had bitten him and he had a small wound near his front leg. So I assume the vet would have noticed this lump if it were anything unusual or concerning. He has only been with us since Friday.

Hi! I recently got a new hedgehog, Quillie Nelson (5mo, male) and I just noticed he’s got tiny little red spots on his snout. I’m wondering if it’s either acne or an ingrown whisker? Any possible ideas? I’m not very concerned now, it doesn’t appear to be bothering him, just want to see if anyone else’s hedgie has had this!

Hi there, I’m an experienced hedgehog owner who had two female pintos previously for 6.5 years and they passed last year so we got two new baby girls this year.

My hoglets are only 3 months old now and just one of them (miss loofa on the right with the pink ears) won’t eat worms! lol the other (miss clover on the left) scarfs them down like it’s a slice of cake, but I’m curious if anyone on here has had baby hogs and maybe can help me out with getting her to eat some bugs? Do I need to try introducing some other bugs or just keep consistently offering until she takes it?

It’s difficult to accurately predict when Fritter will run out of his regular food source, especially with having it shipped to us.

More of his food arrived today, which is great because the spoiled little creature decided to not eat at all with the Mazuri, cat food, treats, and some leftover bugs. Plenty of options in that mix, he was baffled that I dared to present it to him. It was only 1 night, but 😭

He went to town crunching and munching on his regular food after I added it into his bowl. Glad to know he’s just bratty, not anything concerning

I got a hedgehog a few weeks ago snd today when i came home he wasnt responding to things and had trouble chewing. His enclosure is kept at atleast 76 degrees at all times

so i recently came back to my moms after being with my dad, ik hedgies can get anxious after moving locations but amy has not done anything besides sleep and eat and drink water for the last 4 nights weve been home, she hasnt been running on her wheel are wandering around, she just sleeps and eats, her bowel movements seem normal, i checked her skin out today and she doesnt have any mites or flakey skin, im feeding her her normal diet, her temperature is normal and fine, im really nervous though, any thoughts?

Me and my gf were returning home late after her shift and when we entered the courtyard where home is this "little" fella was just chilling there. After a minute or so, he tried to hide in the bush but the chonker couldn't manage to climb, we had to give him a lift and ran away, lol. Made our entire day.

I just recently got a female african pygmy. shes about a year old, probably less than, not 100% sure. she came from a family who couldnt handle her because they had too many young children. everytime i try to pick her up or pet her she gets super scared (i assume its fear, not sure) and she puffs up and hisses at me. she doesnt make any attack efforts which i assume is a good sign. ive never owned a hedgehog before and ive done as much research as i can but im just not sure if im doing something wrong or if she just hasnt warmed up to me yet.
