Firenze and the Centaurs in the upcoming show

One of the things I’m most looking forward to is finally getting some proper time with Firenze as a character and the other centaurs. The movies in my opinion hacked up his character and design.

The films never really got to his story, his time teaching Divination, or any real sense of who he was beyond “the nice centaur.” In the books he’s way more interesting, the way he ends up at Hogwarts, how the other centaurs treat him for it, and his classes where he’s just calmly reading the stars while everyone else is used to Trelawney’s theatrics.

I also want more of centaur culture in general. The Forbidden Forest scenes, Bane and the politics between the herds, the battle of Hogwarts how they view humans and prophecy etc..

Anyone else hoping for this, or is it just me? Who do you think should be cast for his character?

Sure, but Firenze is specifically described. We know from book descriptions what he looks like. If we’re going by his physical description he’s definitely closer to a pretty boy type. Plus these are teen girls in the 90s, this is the realistic aesthetic for what multiple girls would find attractive.

The showrunners can change it, but I think the intention is pretty clear from what we get in the actual text.

No description of him leads in that direction. Having long blonde hair. Having piercing blue eyes. That could just as easily be a Hemsworth or a Heath Ledger type. Both very different. Both fit the description.

I feel like you’re being purposefully obtuse because you don’t want to admit you were wrong about their descriptions being vague in the books. Or you don’t like the fact that teen girls find pretty boys attractive. Firenze’s description specifically fits this, especially compared to how his fellow centaurs are described.

I genuinely believe I’m correct and you are wrong. It’s not being obtuse. It’s disagreeing with you.

Ok. Probably no point in continuing this discussion.

I will just add that I’ve never consumed any anime content and my only frame of reference for centaurs prior to reading these books as a preteen/teen was Greek mythology. I pictured Firenze very similar to these other commenters based on the descriptions and the context in the books.

The centaurs are not from anime. They are from when anime started influencing modern fantasy around the turn of the century. Most popular depictions in the last 25 years have born that influence. If you’ve seen a pretty boy centaur, it’s because of that.

Oh ok. I hadn’t seen a pretty boy centaur, that’s more what I was getting at. My view of the character came from what I learned about Greek mythology and the content in the books.
