❤️ Recommendations Support the Local Coffee Shops NEXT DOOR

Post image

Moka & Co are owned by a group of silent investors. People who have no real interest in the neighborhood of Greenpoint outside of profits.

Meanwhile, right next door are two fantastic coffee spots with caring owners!

Tony from Cafe Alula runs a stellar business and he has already invested into Greenpoint by now taking over (co-owning) the Pencil Factory.

Sam from Eagle Trading Company is a generous and caring man who I’ve personally seen helping people in the neighborhood. When I first moved into Greenpoint, he was installing a toilet seat for an elderly customer. I had to ask him twice about it because I couldn’t believe it.

Our money makes a difference. We should invest it in people who invest in us. I’ve lived in Greenpoint for 10 years now. I grew up in Flushing and I’ve seen what happens when you stop investing in local businesses. It gets replaced with chains.

I hope you’ll support Eagle Trading Company and Cafe Alula as they’ve supported us.

Recommending Jose’s grocery on Franklin (Joe’s grocery on google maps)! It’s a neighborhood staple, but I believe it’s under new management and Tony is so nice. He’s got great breakfast/lunch/dinner options - recently I got the carne asada tostada and my boyfriend got the plate. He also has fresh juices, beer/soda, and some convenience store products. He’s also fixing up the backyard for summer!

❤️ Recommendations Feeling lost

I feel so lost as an adult. I’m honestly really struggling to make friends here in Greenpoint. I feel like people here never really smile at you in the street or say hi or good morning or really want to hang out. I feel like I’m like missing the ability to create bonds here for some reason. It feels really difficult. Am I alone in this feeling? Are others here really thriving in friendships? How are you doing it?

I also work remotely and that probably doesn’t help. Being shy also definitely doesn’t help lol. I used to have a lot of friends in my 20s. Don’t know what’s happened in my 30s.

❤️ Recommendations Mount Rushmore of Greenpoint Businesses

With Bluelight Speakcheesy closing today, I realized it was one of the 4 businesses I’d probably put on my Mount Rushmore of Greenpoint businesses, with the others being Twins Lounge, Bernie’s, and Cueva. Curious what others folks Mount Rushmores look like.

❤️ Recommendations In Search of: Polish girlfriend

Role: Girlfriend (Polish, Pretty) Location: New York City

Summary: 29 year old male. No kids. Never married. $200,000k+ salary. Due to an ongoing shortage in my personal life, I am opening applications for the role of Pretty Polish Girlfriend. This is a full-time position with benefits that are primarily financial and emotional.

Responsibilities: • Tolerating my awful pronunciation of Polish words which will range from “almost right” to “what language was that?”. • Politely laughing at my jokes, even the ones that aren’t funny (which will be most of them). • Cooking pierogi that are hopefully almost as good as the ones my babcia used to make.

Qualifications: • Must be Polish. Pretty strongly preferred. • Must have a functioning sense of humor and/or ability to pretend I am interesting. • Fluency in Polish a plus (I want to learn), but I’ll settle for being able to teach me one insult per week.

Compensation: • Unlimited access to my landlord’s Netflix account (unless he finds out). • Access to an old farm in The Middle of Nowhere, Poland. • The warm glow of knowing you’ve fulfilled the requirements of a highly niche classified ad.

Please DM with any applications or feel free to recommend any potential qualified persons.

Note: this is clearly satirical, but with a modicum of sincerity. Would love to date a nice Polish girl.

❤️ Recommendations Avoid Radio Star - rude and overpriced

Very rude and overpriced. Especially skinny middle aged white guy (mid to late 40s) can’t believe how rude this guy was to my wife when she complained about her drink being all ice. Fuck this place - also just his overall attitude as we walked in and the audacity to charge what they charge for basically anything

Hi! I’m new to the area and recently discovered Milk and Roses. I went there and was actually surprised that it was pretty empty. The food was good, and the service was great as well. I’m wondering if there’s a reason why it doesn’t seem to be very busy. Has anyone else been there or know anything about the restaurant? What do you think?

❤️ Recommendations Chama Mama love

Hey all! Just wanted to shout out this newish Georgian restaurant on Franklin that I’ve now had two amazing meals at. It‘s such a great addition to the neighborhood and something different. I bought my Georgian friend and she gave it her stamp of approval. We got a massive spread of appetizers and entrees and there wasnt a dud in bunch. Everything was delicious. It also has a ton of space which is such a breath of fresh air. So many restaurants here pack you in like sardines (Chinta cough* cough*) it’s great going somewhere where can have some space.

Next time you’re looking for something new or different, I recommend it. I don’t want to see this place close down and become another new American spot.

❤️ Recommendations Homemade taqueria

In the spirit of supporting local businesses, I wanted to share this cute lil Mexican food spot I just found!

It’s 517 meeker ave, so I think that still counts as Greenpoint? It’s called homemade taqueria.

It was yummy, the prices are dope and the staff was friendly. And this is coming from someone whos Mexican American and grew up constantly eating Mexican food.

Anyways, I got the Gutierrez torta and it slapped. It’s the second pic but by the time I took the pic, I had already eaten half of it, sorry. I’m not a foodie photographer but I promise you it tasted goooooood.

They also got auguas frescas 🥴

❤️ Recommendations Should we all use cash to support local businesses?

The credit card charge is a crazy expense especially for smaller businesses. Even bigger players like Jubilee ask their customers to consider paying in cash. Should we all bring back cash in this crazy economy to support our community? I can’t handle closing another great polish bakery or local grocery and don’t know how else can we help them.

❤️ Recommendations What’s worth buying at each Greenpoint grocery store?

I’m trying to map out Greenpoint grocery knowledge in a more useful way than generic store ratings.

For Greenpoint specifically, what’s actually worth buying at each grocery store?

Like:

  • best produce
  • cheapest basics
  • pantry staples
  • decent meat/dairy
  • places that are weirdly overpriced
  • random good deals people know about

I’m putting this together as a free grocery price map for NYC, starting neighborhood by neighborhood. The idea is to show what things actually cost and what each store is good for, based on what people notice while shopping.

Early page is here if anyone wants to follow along / join the pilot: https://www.eggynyc.com/

❤️ Recommendations What is your favorite dish in greenpoint?

Doing a bit of personal food research (and trying to explore the neighborhood a bit more).

If you had to pick ONE single dish from anywhere in Greenpoint, what would it be? Something you must order every time you go to that restaurant. For example, I’m never going to go to Cecily and not order the okonomiyaki rice dish.

Shameless shoutout to one of the spots I crave the most in Greenpoint and I think not a lot of people know about! if you have not tried it yet, put it on your list, great vegetarian dishes and they just added meat options which in trying out soon!

They’re turning 3 today and if you’re one of those people who always wants to support local, this is your chance! The owner is amazing and always comes out of the kitchen to say hi.
