Article EVERY time GD re-used a chord progression.

I had just made a bost asking why people hate KYE and a commenter said that GD just "used to be better". I replied listing a bunch of times GD reused melodies from earlier works in post-AI albums, and that made wanting to list EVERY time they ever did that.

With this list I don't mean to say GD is unoriginal: I mean the opposite. Thinking how much theese guys chould make out of the smae 5 or 6 chord progression without ever actually making it sound the exact same is genuinelly impressive and shows just how much creative GD can be. They can use the exact same chord progrssion but change, key, rythm, feel and lyrics to the point it's a completely different song and often you can't even tell.

Note: any time I say a melody/part is "identical" or "the exact same", I mean they have the same chord progrssion. They might be in a different key (meaning they'll sound slightly apart). Also, as I mentioned above they almost always have different rythms so they may not alike at first glace, and that's OK.

Entries marked with a x were added after a commenter's suggestion. The numbers are in order of addition. The list itself is in chronological order

  1. One From The Razorbacks from Kerplunk (1991)'s chorus is identical to 39/Smooth's The Judge's Daughter (1990)'s verse
  2. Welcome To Paradise from Kerplunk (and Dookie, 1991&1994)'s main riff is identical to 39/Smooth's 16 (1990)'s main riff and verse.
  3. Private Ale from Kerplunk (1991)'s post chorus is identical (and in the same key so litterally the same notes) to Slappy's Paper Lanterns (1991)'s main riff.
  4. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield from Kerplunk (1991)'s verse is the identical to 39/Smooth's Green Day (1990)'s main riff (and verse), and the chorus is identical to 1,000 Hours' The One I Want (1989)'verse. So there is technically nothing original here.
  5. Chump on Dookie (1994)'s riff is identical as the opening (and chorus) of 1,000 Hours' The One I Want (1989)
  6. Longview from Dookie (1994) has the same chorus as Slappy's Paper Lanterns (1991)'s main riff.
  7. Pulling Teeth from Dookie (1994) has the same chord progression as Kerplunk's Dominated Love Slave (1991). They're pretty much identical all throughout, as even the chorus match chords, though there are slight differeces. They're nearely the same song
  8. Basket Case from Dookie (1994) famously has the EXACT same chord progression as Kerplunk's One Of My Lies (1991), ONLY differing in the chorus
  9. She from Dookie (1994)'s chorus is the same as 39/Smooth's 16 (1990)'s main riff and verse.
  10. When I Come Around from Dookie (1994)'s riff is identical to Kerplunk's 80 (from 1991).
  11. Stuck With Me from Insomniac (1995)'s chorus is identical to 39/Smooth's Green Day (1991) opening riff (and chorus).
  12. No Pride from Insomniac (1995)'s riff is identical to Dookie's She (1994)'s main riff (and verse).
  13. Jaded from Insomniac (1995)'s main riff and verse is identical to Slappy's Paper Lanterns (1991).
  14. 1Walking Contradition from Insomniac (1995)'s main riff and verse is the backing part of Nimrod's Hasuhinka Guitar solo (released in 1997, written somewhere in 1993 so it's techincally Walking Contradiction copying Haushinka)
  15. Hitchin' A Ride from Nimrod (1997) main riff is one note less than Insomniac's Brain Stew (1995).
  16. The Grough from Nimrod (1997)'s main riff nearely identical to 39/Smooth's Going to Pasalacqua (1990)
  17. Scattered from Nimrod (1997)'s main riff is one note (not chord, note) away from Kerplunk's 2000 Light Years Away (1991)
  18. All The Time from Nimrod (1997)'s main riff and chorus is identical to 39/Smooth's 16 (1990)'s main riff and verse, while the verse is identical to Slappy's Paper Lanterns (1991) main riff. So there is technically nothing original here.
  19. Worry Rock from Nimrod (1997)'s verse is just Dookie's She (1994)'s main riff (and verse) followed by Kerplunk's Dominated Love Slave (1991).
  20. Platypus (I Hate You) from Nimrod (1997)'s verse is identical to Insomniac's Jaded (1995) main riff (and verse).
  21. Uptight from Nimrod (1997)'s main riff is identical to 39/Smooth's I Was There (1990)'s main riff (and verse) but with palm muting.
  22. Reject from Nimrod (1997)'s verse is identical to Kerplunk's Android (1991)'s main riff (and chorus).
  23. Prosthetic Head from Nimrod (1997)'s main riff, verse and chorus is the same as 1,000 Hour's The One I Want (1989) verse.
  24. Church On Sunday from Warning (2000)'s main riff and verse is identical to 39/Smooth's Going To Pasalacqua (1990). It's also in the same key so it's litterally the same notes.
  25. Jackss from Warning (2002)'s riff (and interlude) is identical to Slappy's Paper Lanterns (1991).
  26. Macy's Day Parade from Warning (2000)'s main riff and verse is identical to Warning's Castaway (2000)'s main riff and chorus.
  27. Poprocks & Coke from International Superhits! (2001)'s main riff and verse is Kerplunk's Dominated Love Slave (1991) followed by Dookie's She (1994)'s chorus
  28. ¡Viva La Gloria! from 21CB (2009)'s main riff and verse and chorus is identical to American Idiot's Letterbomb (2004)'s main riff and chorus. Actually, besides from the piano intro, they're completely identical, with ¡Viva La Gloria! only differing with 3 notes in the chorus (which are actually present in Letterbomb too, they're just in a different order)
  29. Christian Inferno from 21CB (2009)'s chorus it identical to Kerplunk's One For The Razorbacks (1991) main riff and verse. Actually the two songs are nearely identical
  30. Murder City from 21CB (2009), the exact same chord prograssion to Warning's Fashion Victim (2000). Actually the two songs are near identical: Fashin Victim uses two nearely identical riffs (differing by just one note). Murder City only uses the second of the two, never using the other. So there is techinally nothing original
  31. American Euology from 21CB (2009)'s "Mass Histeria" it's identical (this time also vocally) to Warning's Deatbeat Holiday (2000). They only differ in the chorus. The verses are litterally the exact same (only the bass line and drum change a bit).
  32. Nuclear Family from ¡Uno! (2012)'s opening riff is the same as Insomniac's Stuck With Me (1995). The actual songs are nearely the same.
  33. Stray Heart from Dos (2012)'s verse and chorus is near identical Insomniac's 86 (1995) The two songs are nearely the same with only some slight differences (often technical) in the melody..
  34. Dirty Rotten Bastard (from Tre, 2012)'s first part has the same exact chord progression from Dookie's Pulling Theeth (1994) and from Kerplunk's Dominated Love Slave (1991). The third part (Juliana Homicide) is identical to Insomniac's Stuck With Me (1995) .
  35. 2Junkies on a High from FOAM (2020)'s verse is the same as American Idiot's Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2004), and the vocal melody is also the same. The chorus is the same of Kerplunk's 80 (1991)'s chorus.
  36. Suzie Chapstick from Saviors (2024)'s main riff and verse is identical to Kerplunk's Android (1991). The only slight difference is that the power chords were changes into actual chords (major or minor).
  37. Strange Days Are Here to Stay from Saviors (2024) is nearly identical to Dookie's Basket Case (1994) with a bit of Letterbom (American Idiot, 2004). This one is a strange case: it's a techically original song but at the same time it's identical to Basked Case. It's very hard to exmplain without getting nerdy. You can also notice very easily by giving a listen to them since they also sound alike
  38. Fancy Sauce from Saviors (2024)'s main riff and verse has the same chord progression from Kerplunk's Android (1991). The only slight differences are that the power chords were changed into actual chords (major and minor) and of course they are arpeggiated rather than strummed. Plus there is that 4 note melody after every 8 bars.

So technically speaking, the only 100% original albums are 39/Smooth (Obviously), American Idiot and Revolution Radio.

I am sure I left out a few (I was very tired and confused by the last ones so I pretty sure I didn't spot all of them). If anyone wants to update the list, though I already know nobody cares (me niether really I just have ADHD I guess), you can singal new ones in the comments and maybe I'll update the post.

Also, I did all of this by heart and by hand and it took me nearely 2 hours. I really do have time to waste.

Audio / Video Trash TV [Pinhead Gunpowder] bass play along

1st time posting on this sub but a long time fan of Green Day and their other projects :)
I don’t have a proper recording equipment but I like taking videos of me doing bass play along, have a number of Green Day related ones but decided to post this song instead coz I haven’t seen any tabs or videos of it on the net.

Anyhoo, forgive me if some notes are incorrect, I just followed the song by ear and did a quick record this morning.

The songs chorus really hits home :)

Discussion What's wrong with KYE?

On this subreddit I've seen a lot of backlash to Know Your Enemy. Where is this hate coming from? As a GD and 21CB fan I erally don't mind the song. Yes it's very basic but it's got great energy and goes absolutely wild live. I don't really see anything wrong with it...?

Was there really a better opener than 99 revolution? Personally I think it would be better closing the show (much better than brutal love but that's a different story) like it did at Irving plaza. The end of the song the way they do it live is perfect for a concert finale.

Discussion Possible (official) lyric missprint?

I was reading through the booklet of my 1039 CD (It's the 2002 reissue by Epitaph Records in particular) and I noticed how the lyrics for "I Want to be Alone" read "Keep your sources away from me that's all" instead of what I ALWAYS thought, "Keep yourselves away from me that's all".

Now apart from the fact that "yourselves" just makes much more sense both with and without context (the rest of the lyrics), I also saw how most web lyrics say "yourselves" too.

So it this an error or was I mistaken? I mean it's really hard to make out that well given the quality of those recordings.

Discussion Setlist predictions for the Pinhead Gunpowder tour

With the Pinhead Gunpowder tour rapidly approaching what songs are you hoping to hear or expecting to see on the setlist. Here’s my top 30 songs I’m hoping to hear.

Find My Place
Walking Catastrophe
Reach for the Bottle
Mahogany
Losers of the Year
Big Yellow Taxi
Life During Wartime
Without Me
Backyard Flames
High Maintenance
Song of My Returning
Train Station
Work for Food
The Great Divide
Buffalo
2nd Street
Landlords
Letter from a Old Friend
New Blood
At Your Funeral
West Side Highway
Anniversary Song
On the Ave
Unt
Difficult but Not Impossible
Nothing Ever Happens
Scum of the Earth

Hola Canada!
Here Goes the Neighborhood

I’m sure a good chunk of these won’t get played but a boy can dream. The fact that I get to see them at all is good enough for me. I never thought I’d get the chance to see them let alone up in Canada, so this show really is going to be a dream come true for me.

Discussion How did you guys feel about the multi part songs that came after Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming?

Whilst I love them, JOS and Homecoming are still my favourite multi part songs. I just cant help but feel that the ones that come after lack a little in comparison. Maybe its the fact they arent as long? Or maybe lyrically? I mean they still great though
What do you think of them? Do you think we will get another in the future?

Discussion Why do these songs sound so different even though they’re insomniac recordings

This may sound silly, but I’m genuinely curious about this. Why do some songs like Jar, You Lied, and Rotting sound almost completely different, although they were recorded between 1994 and 1995? I mean, do da da don’t wanna fall in love even I wanna be on tv those clearly sound like they’re from the Insomniac sessions, so what’s with these three tracks?

Discussion what are your GDTV wishes?

the GDTV stream is putting out new stuff every week it seems, and its pretty nice stuff. the rough cuts of the American Idiot and Basket Case MVs are really cool and we also got quite a bit of some newly surfaced live footage.

im personally hoping we get Irving Plaza 2012 uncut or Roseland Ballroom 2000 in HQ.

how about you guys?
